Moodle Administrators – Merge User Accounts to clean up the database easily

Moodle Administrators - Merge User Accounts to clean up the database easily
Moodle Administrators - Merge User Accounts to clean up the database easily

Moodle LMS is used by more than 365 million users around the world. The flexibility for customization offered by Moodle LMS is unbeatable by any other open source LMS. However, the Moodle administrators struggle with cleanup of the Moodle database over a long time. In this post, we will see how you can clean up the user accounts in your Moodle site.

There may be times that you have got multiple accounts created for a single user in Moodle. On top of that they have recorded some progress in both of their user accounts. It will be a huge problem for the Moodle Admins to keep their progress from both accounts and then remove any one account.

The merge User Accounts plugin is a perfect fit for this specific scenario. It will help you to merge two Moodle user accounts into one. You can get the latest version of this plugin from the official plugins repository here.

The plugin will assign all activity & records from user A to user B. After merging the user account, the User B will keep record of all progress ever made by the user in Moodle. This plugin can help you significantly reduce the unnecessary users created in your Moodle records.

What are the other tips you want to share with other Moodle administrators to clean up their databases. Please share with us in the comments section below.

Seattle-Based Recruitment Automation Startup Humanly Raises $12M in Series A Round

Humanly, a Seattle-based HRTech startup that helps companies automate their recruiting functions, has raised $12 million in its Series A  round led by Drive Capital. With this investment round, the company plans to grow its engineering and go-to-market teams.

The startup’s goal is to automate mundane tasks for human resources personnel so they can focus on building deeper connections with candidates. Its technology also helps with interviews by providing automated notes, follow-up emails and insights. It claims to have processed more than 1 million job candidates, including for clients such as Microsoft, the restaurant chain Fazoli’s and Seattle-based accounting and consulting firm Moss Adams.

Co-founded by Prem Kumar, Andrew Gardner and Bryan Leptich in 2019, Humanly provides artificial intelligence-powered chat that handles tasks like screening, scheduling and re-engaging with candidates. The platform’s chat technology can also help with reference checks.

Speaking about the company, Co-founder & CEO of Humanly, Prem Kumar, said:

Any conversation you’re having with job candidates, via SMS chatbot or human, we want to be there and make those more efficient and more equitable. The startup aims to address a pain point in the hiring process where limited data is exchanged between hiring managers’ bots, screening tools, and interview transcripts. Multiple devices often make candidates feel like they are “being interviewed by three companies.

Humanly’s library of conversational interactions is stripped of bias triggers such as gendered words, culture-specific terminology, lines of questions that bias towards certain cognitive processes, and even role-specific biases. It optionally allows customers to hide fields like a candidate’s name, so hiring teams can focus on factors predictive of success per role, industry, and market.

Moodle teachers – How to Paste grades from Spreadsheet in Moodle gradebook?

Moodle teachers - How to Paste grades from Spreadsheet in Moodle gradebook?
Moodle teachers - How to Paste grades from Spreadsheet in Moodle gradebook?

Moodle LMS is packed with a lot of hidden features which are pretty useful for educators. This is one of the main reason behind its popularity. It offers you the possibility to customize the features by using the Moodle plugins if not present in the core. In this post, we will see how you can paste the student grades from spreadsheet in Moodle gradebook.

The Moodle Gradebook itself is one of the best gradebook management tool. With Moodle gradebook, you can create different type of gradebook setup e.g. different weights for grade items, manual grade items, grade categories, different aggregation methods etc. Now, let’s see how you can import grades from a spreadsheet in Moodle gradebook.

There may be times that you might have assigned the grades for your class in a spreadsheet and you have to import them in Moodle for a compiled gradebook. You can also have a look at manual graded items in Moodle. So, lets see how you can import the grades from spreadsheet.

Method 1:

The first method is to save the whole spreadsheet as a csv file. Once you finalized your spreadsheet, you can save it as a comma separated values file. To import the grades from this csv file, please follow these steps:

  • Navigate to your Course > Grades > Import page.
  • Just drop your csv file in the dropdown area.
  • Set options as required.
  • Click the “Upload grades” button.

Method 2:

The second method allows you to directly paste from a spreadsheet into Moodle gradebook. But you need to make sure that you have the correct column names for your grades. It is best to first export the grades and then use the same spreadsheet to add grades.

  • For the students you need either their username, their ID or their email address. Add the grades you need and copy the relevant section.
  • In your course, go to Grade >Import>Paste from spreadsheet and paste.
  • In the preview, ensure you match up the identifier you used for the students -so if you used ‘username’, ensure it maps to ‘username’. Do the same for your graded activities
  • If everything has been correctly mapped, you should get a success message and the grades will have been added, displaying in a different colour to show they were imported directly into the gradebook.

If you face any problems while importing your grades in Moodle, please feel free to share with us in the comments section below.
