The Moodle™ Plugins We Actually Use on Corporate LMS Projects

When we start a new corporate Moodle™ LMS site, the first thing we look at isn’t the theme, the colour scheme, or the homepage layout. It’s how the platform is actually going to behave once real learners, managers and admins are using it every single day.

Out of the box, Moodle™ LMS already gives you a genuinely capable learning platform – courses, quizzes, assignments, forums, completion rules, learning paths, reporting. You don’t need a mountain of plugins to get something usable. But once Moodle starts running inside a real business, the wish list tends to grow.

L&D wants employees automatically enrolled based on their department. Managers want a report showing who’s actually completed their mandatory training. Learners want certificates they can point to. Admins are dealing with duplicate accounts, wishing they didn’t have to rebuild the same content five times, and trying to figure out who’s stalled halfway through a course.

That’s where a well-chosen plugin stack earns its keep.

We’re not in the habit of installing plugins because they look interesting. Every plugin you add becomes something you have to maintain – tested through upgrades, watched for compatibility issues, weighed up from a security and performance standpoint. So our approach is to keep the platform lean, and lean on a small, trusted set of plugins that solve problems we run into again and again on corporate LMS projects.

Here’s what’s usually on that list.

Custom Certificate

This is one of the first additions we make, mostly because certificates come up in almost every kind of corporate training – compliance, professional development, product certification, health and safety, distributor training, customer education. Sooner or later, someone needs proof the learner actually finished.

Custom Certificate lets us design certificates around the client’s brand and auto-populate them with data already in the LMS – name, course title, completion date, certificate number, whatever’s relevant. Tie it into Moodle’s completion system and you’ve turned “someone manually prepares certificates at the end of every course” into something that just happens on its own once the learner meets the requirements. For a team managing hundreds or thousands of learners, that’s not a small win.

Configurable Reports

Reporting is where a simple-sounding LMS project can quietly spiral. It starts innocently: management wants to know who’s completed a course. A few weeks in, HR wants it broken down by department. A regional manager wants results filtered by country. Someone else wants a list of people who’ve never logged in. Someone else again wants certifications flagged before they expire.

Modern Moodle already does a lot of this through inbuilt Custom Reports, and we always check what core can handle before reaching for a plugin. But Configurable Reports earns its place when the organisation needs something beyond what’s convenient out of the box.

The real goal isn’t “install another reporting tool” – it’s cutting down the spreadsheet gymnastics happening outside the LMS. If someone on the learning team is downloading five reports every Friday, stitching them together in Excel, and emailing the result to management, that’s usually a sign the reporting setup needs rethinking.

H5P

H5P has changed what course development looks like in Moodle, mainly because it gets designers away from the old pattern of pages, PDFs and static videos. It’s already built into current Moodle installs, but we usually still bring in the H5P Interactive Content plugin instead of relying on the core version because it gives us more flexibility than what ships by default, so our work is really about setting that up properly and helping the learning team get comfortable using it.

The big win is turning learners from passive viewers into participants. A twenty-minute training video doesn’t have to stay a twenty-minute training video – you can drop in questions, interactions and decision points along the way. Same goes for presentations, flashcards, timelines, drag-and-drop exercises.

That said, we’re careful not to use H5P purely to make a course “feel” interactive. Every interaction should be doing something for the learner. If a plain page explains something perfectly well, there’s no need to dress it up. Used selectively, H5P makes training genuinely more engaging – used everywhere, it just adds development overhead.

Completion Progress

One of the first questions any learner asks when they land in a course is: how much of this have I actually done? The Completion Progress block answers that with a clear visual – which matters a lot in corporate training, because people usually aren’t browsing out of curiosity. They’ve been assigned something, and they need to finish it. A new hire needs onboarding done before system access. A sales rep needs product certification. A factory worker needs safety training wrapped up before a deadline.

We treat this less as a standalone visual feature and more as one piece of a bigger completion strategy – activity completion, course completion, restrictions and progress tracking all need to work together, or the “progress bar” just becomes decoration.

Group Choice

Moodle groups are useful, but managing memberships by hand gets old fast. Group Choice lets learners pick their own group – handy when the group represents something the learner genuinely needs to choose, like a workshop slot, a coaching session, or a regional training group.

Picture a leadership programme with 300 participants and twelve optional live workshops. Without self-selection, someone on the L&D team ends up running registrations through email and spreadsheets. Letting people choose inside the LMS keeps everything in one place. It’s a small plugin, but these are often the changes that make the biggest difference to whoever’s actually running the platform day to day.

Questionnaire

Training teams are always collecting feedback – evaluating a course, running a training-needs analysis, checking whether a programme actually worked. Moodle already offers a few ways to gather this kind of information, so we don’t reach for Questionnaire automatically. But when a client needs more flexible survey functionality, it’s a solid option.

A good feedback strategy shouldn’t stop at “did you enjoy the training?” We might ask learners how confident they feel before a programme starts and again afterwards. We might want to check weeks later whether they’re actually applying what they learned. Managers might need to weigh in on performance changes. Questionnaire helps shift the conversation from “did they finish the course” to “did the training actually change anything.”

FilterCodes

This is one of our favourites for making content feel personal without maintaining five near-identical copies of the same course. At its simplest, it can just display the learner’s name – but the real value shows up when you combine it with data already sitting in Moodle: profile fields, roles, groups, and so on.

Say a company runs one onboarding programme across several departments. Most of the content is shared, but a few instructions differ between Sales, Operations and Finance. The obvious fix is three separate courses – until something changes and now you’re updating three courses instead of one. FilterCodes lets certain content shift dynamically instead, so one course serves several audiences. We use it carefully, though – personalisation should make an LMS easier to manage, not bury it under logic future admins have to reverse-engineer. Done well, it cuts a lot of duplicated content.

Generico

Generico tackles a related but different problem: reusable templates and content blocks you can drop into different parts of Moodle. This matters most when an LMS has a large number of courses, maintained by different people.

Take something as basic as a support contact box. If it’s been copied by hand into fifty different courses, changing the support email means editing fifty pages. A reusable component means you manage that once. Generico can do more sophisticated things too, but we generally keep that in the hands of experienced admins – the same flexibility that makes it powerful can make an LMS a mess if everyone starts building their own custom elements. Our goal is always to hand the client a platform that’s easier to maintain once we’re gone.

Components for Learning (C4L)

A lot of corporate Moodle courses have a visual problem that has nothing to do with the LMS itself – every page looks the same. Heading, paragraph, image, another paragraph, a PDF link. Nothing technically wrong with it, but stretched over a long programme, it gets monotonous and hard to scan.

C4L gives designers reusable visual components – consistent ways to present learning objectives, key information, tips, reminders, quotes. The value is in the consistency: if every warning across the LMS looks the same, learners start to recognise the pattern instantly. For organisations with several people building content, C4L can become a small internal design system, so people aren’t each inventing their own colours and layouts from scratch.

AutoEnrol

Manual enrolment is manageable at fifty users and painful at several thousand. AutoEnrol enrols people automatically once certain conditions are met – and the real opportunity is connecting that to the organisation’s existing user data.

If employee profiles already store department, business unit, location or role, the LMS can start making enrolment decisions on its own instead of an admin identifying people one by one. A new Sales hire gets sales onboarding automatically. A newly promoted manager gets management training. A distributor gets the right product certification. The idea is simple: admins should be managing rules and exceptions, not repeating the same manual action hundreds of times. Good enrolment architecture is one of the easiest ways to get there.

Merge User Accounts

Duplicate accounts show up on pretty much every LMS that’s been running long enough. Someone registers with a personal email, then gets a corporate one later. A company changes its email domain. An integration creates a new account even though one already existed.

Deleting the duplicate is tempting but risky – it might hold real learning history. Merge User Accounts lets admins combine records properly instead of just picking one and losing the other. You won’t use this every week, but when you need it, you really need it. We treat it as part of the maintenance toolkit, restricted to people who understand the consequences – anything touching learning records deserves care, especially where completion data doubles as compliance evidence.

Restriction by Relative Date

This one comes into its own when you’re designing a learning journey rather than a single course. Take a thirty-day onboarding programme. Handing a new employee every policy, video, quiz and activity on day one technically works – but it’s overwhelming.

A better approach releases things gradually: orientation in the first few days, role-specific content later, a manager check-in partway through, the final assessment near the end. Relative-date restrictions make this kind of pacing easy, tying availability to events like enrolment date or activity completion rather than fixed calendar dates. Combine it with completion rules and automated reminders, and the LMS starts moving people through a structured journey without HR chasing anyone manually.

Tiles Course Format

How a course looks has a bigger effect on how learners feel about it than you’d expect. A single long page with fifteen or twenty sections can make even a well-built course look intimidating before anyone’s even started.

Tiles gives you a more visual alternative – an onboarding course, say, broken into clear blocks like Company Introduction, Policies, Systems, Health and Safety, Your Role, Final Assessment. Instead of scrolling through a long list, learners get the shape of the course at a glance. We like this a lot for programmes with several distinct modules. It’s not about decoration – it’s about learners understanding the structure and knowing what comes next.

Static Pages

Corporate LMS platforms often need to host information that doesn’t really belong inside a course – an FAQ, help documentation, technical support details, learning policies, privacy information, an explanation of how the internal academy works. Without a proper place for it, admins sometimes end up building fake “courses” just to park this content.

Static Pages solves that cleanly, letting organisations build standalone information pages that still feel native to the LMS. It’s a small thing, but it goes a long way toward making Moodle feel like a complete learning environment rather than just a folder of courses – especially for clients building out a bigger internal academy or customer portal.

Moodle Adminer

This one’s a different animal entirely. It’s a technical tool that gives direct database-level access, and for experienced admins and developers, that can be genuinely useful when troubleshooting tricky problems.

But it’s not something we switch on and forget about on a production site. Anything powerful enough to fix hard problems is powerful enough to cause serious ones if it’s misused. We treat Adminer as a controlled tool – whether it belongs on a given production environment depends on the client’s infrastructure and security posture. Just because it’s in our toolkit doesn’t mean it belongs on every live LMS.

Reengagement

Worth adding to this list, because keeping people engaged is one of the biggest challenges in corporate online learning. Getting someone enrolled is the easy part. Getting them back three days later to actually finish is much harder – especially when training is competing with the rest of their job.

Reengagement automates the reminder process. A learner gets nudged if a course sits incomplete past a certain point, and the reminders stop once they finish. That’s one more repetitive task off the L&D team’s plate – instead of someone exporting completion reports and chasing people by email, the LMS handles the first round of follow-up on its own. Particularly valuable for compliance training and longer onboarding programmes.

Why We Don’t Just Install Everything

It would be easy to turn this into a checklist and install the lot on every new Moodle site. That’s not how we work.

One organisation might need Custom Certificate, AutoEnrol, FilterCodes and Reengagement, and have zero use for Group Choice. Another might lean heavily on surveys and reporting and have no certification requirement at all.

So we start with the business process, not the plugin directory – how people join the LMS, how they’re trained, how content is structured, how progress gets tracked, how managers get their information, and which of those tasks currently eats up someone’s time manually. Once we understand that, choosing plugins is the easy part. Sometimes the right answer is to install nothing, because Moodle core already covers it. Other times, one well-chosen plugin saves hours of admin work every month.

Putting It All Together

The real payoff comes when none of this is treated as an isolated feature.

Imagine a manufacturer launching a product academy for its distributor network. A new distributor employee gets an LMS account. Their profile already knows which distributor and region they belong to, so enrolment automation drops them straight into the right product training.

Tiles course format gives them a clear overview of the journey ahead. C4L keeps the visual language consistent across lessons, while H5P adds interactive product demos and knowledge checks. Completion Progress shows exactly what’s left. Relative-date restrictions release content gradually instead of dumping it all at once. If they stall, Reengagement sends a nudge. FilterCodes personalises parts of the course based on what’s already known about them. A Questionnaire at the end captures feedback. Once they’ve met the requirements, Custom Certificate hands them proof of completion – and the training team can see, through reporting, exactly who’s started, who’s finished, and where people are getting stuck.

From the learner’s side, it just feels simple: log in, follow the training, finish it. Behind that simplicity, though, there’s a fair amount of logic and automation doing the work quietly in the background. That’s really where the value of a well-built corporate Moodle platform shows up.

Our Approach at LMSDaily

Our goal on a corporate LMS project was never to install as many plugins as possible, or to show off how technically sophisticated the build can get. It’s the opposite. We want learners to find the LMS simple. We want course creators to find content creation manageable. We want the L&D team spending less time on repetitive admin, and management getting the information they need without asking someone to build another spreadsheet.

That’s why plugins like Custom Certificate, Completion Progress, Configurable Reports, Group Choice, Questionnaire, FilterCodes, Generico, Components for Learning, AutoEnrol, Merge User Accounts, Restriction by Relative Date, Tiles, Static Pages and Reengagement keep showing up in our toolkit for corporate Moodle projects. Technical tools like Moodle Adminer stay in the mix as well, but they sit behind a more controlled layer, weighed against each client’s own security requirements.

There’s no single perfect Moodle plugin list – only the right combination for a particular organisation. The best corporate LMS platforms aren’t the ones with the most features. They’re the ones where enrolment, learning, completion, reporting and admin all fit together so well that people barely notice the technology holding it up. That’s the standard we work toward.

The LMS shouldn’t create more work for the learning team. It should take work away – while giving learners a clearer, more effective experience.
