B2B Hybrid Workspace Platform Desana Raises $7.4M to Expand Its Operations in US

Desana, a UK-based B2B global hybrid workspace software that lets enterprises book flexible office desk space for their employees on the fly, recently announced that it has raised $7.4 million in a funding round co-led by PT1 – PropTech1 Ventures and JLL Spark Global Ventures, with participation from original pre-seed investor Techstart Ventures, BGF and Groundbreak Ventures.

The company intends to use the funds to continue to expand operations and its business reach, particularly in the US, where they see significant opportunity to expand their list of enterprise customers, which includes Github, Twilio, Sonos, Elastic and Splunk, amongst others.

Led by Michael Cockburn, CEO, Desana offers employers on-demand access to workspace in over 600 cities across more than 60 countries. For the first time, companies are able to provide their employees with access to workspace anywhere in the world, while only paying for the exact hours that workspace is used.

Sharing about the company, Co-founder & CEO of Desana, Michael Cockburn, said:

We’ve come a long way from launching our initial product from our living rooms in Edinburgh to working at a global scale with some of the biggest companies in the world as they fundamentally rethink the way they utilise office space. We established Desana ahead of one of the biggest shifts in working culture for generations, and this unprecedented transition has driven a huge amount of growth for us. But, given the scale of the change in this industry, we believe that there’s still so much more to come.

Companies can also integrate their own offices onto the platform, offering a single solution to the complex task of managing global hybrid working patterns and allowing the tracking of accurate workspace data to support long-term real estate decisions.

Headquartered in Edinburgh, Scotland, the company is witnessing significant demand from enterprises wishing to adjust to new, hybrid working modes. Since its launch, the SaaS and marketplace platform garnered reach in North America, with its team now straddling Canada, the US, and its UK HQ. The firm delivers the “future of work” solution globally.

Tanguy Quero, Investment Principal, JLL Spark, commented:

Desana has developed a best-in-class platform to help companies address the challenge of managing a distributed workforce with a hybrid or flexible model. Their solution uniquely combines ease of deployment and scalability for management teams with great user experience for employees.

Gold star for Polish edtech as 'Coding Giants' raises €3.5 million

Coding Giants – the Polish Edtech Startup has announced a funding round of €3.5 million from CEE-based investors PortfoLion and Nunatak Capital. Coding Giants is an organization that provides coding classes to children and teens ages 7 to 18.

Lead investor Budapest-based PortfoLion has previously invested in several edtech companies such as Novakid, CodeCool, and SDA. Nunatak Capital are a Polish VC fund specialising in the areas of data science and AI.

The founders of Coding Giants said:

Along with the general development of the company, we want to speed up growth on foreign markets. In Spanish-speaking countries, we have proven that we are able to implement our business model, expanding at a rapid pace. Now we wish to accelerate expansion even further, which would be difficult to achieve without the support of external funding. We are interested not only in financial resources as we have gained partners who have experience in the development of educational start-ups in global markets.

Coding Giants has over 77 courses and over 500 lesson plans for students which include Scratch, App Inventor, Python, C#, JavaScript and HTML – with a goal of increasing trainer numbers to 1000 by the end of the year. Funding will also be allocated to the development of the proprietary LMS system with innovative gamification and AI modules supporting education.

Adam Purwin, Nunatak Capital said:

Data Science solutions, especially those based on AI algorithms, are increasingly being used in the edtech sector. The analysis of data from Coding Giants’ learning management system on student behaviour will enable the identification of learning styles, level of motivation to learn, commitment to current tasks, and an accurate diagnosis of knowledge gaps

Europe make up the lion’s share of current customers with only 5% from the Latin America region, and 5% from other regions. It has seen its growth in Spanish-speaking countries triple due to a focused effort – a continuous key objective.

Moodle Educators – Now grade essay questions easily using Essay auto-grade plugin

Moodle Educators - Now grade essay questions easily using Essay auto-grade plugin
Moodle Educators - Now grade essay questions easily using Essay auto-grade plugin

Moodle LMS provides one of the best online quiz engine. As an educator, you can use Moodle Quiz to create all different types of online exams with various types of questions. There are many other question types contributed by the community in the Moodle plugins directory. In this post we will see about one such Moodle plugin – Essay (auto-grade).

As an Moodle educator, you might have faced the problem with essay type questions which need manual grading. Most of the other question types are automatically graded but Essay Question type needs the educator’s intervention for grading. It often consumes a lot of time and effort of the teachers as well as the students needs to wait for their results until its graded.

The Essay (Auto-Grade) question type plugin awards a provisional grade as soon as the student submits an essay. The provisional grade is based on the number of words, sentences and target phrases that are present in the essay. For automatic grading the plugin uses the following characteristics:

  • the number of words in the response
  • the number of characters in the response
  • the presence of one or more target phrases in the response
  • the presence of one or more common errors in the response

The best thing about this plugin is that at any time, the teacher can override the automatically generated grade by giving a manual grade and feedback as in the standard “Essay” question type. In addition, this question type allows the teacher to specify “grade bands” which can be used to create a non-linear grading scheme.

You can download the latest version of the Essay (Auto-Grade) question type plugin here.

GitHub Launches Octernships to Empower the Next Generation of Students

GitHub, the world’s largest software development collaboration platform, has launched its new Octernships programme to empower the next generation of developers through real-world experience with partner organisations.

According to the platform, the initiative would put students in touch with global business partners for internships and mentoring programmers in open-source and software development. GitHub Octernships is initially available to students in 10 countries — Colombia, India, Indoneisa, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. It will gradually expand to more regions.

How GitHub Octernships work?

To apply, students need to be verified on GitHub Global Campus, and be an active contributor on GitHub. Verified and eligible students on GitHub Global Campus can explore industry opportunities from the GitHub Partner network. Partner organisations share a problem statement, or an assignment that students need to build, and then submit using GitHub Classroom.

Partner organisations review submitted projects, communicate via pull requests, and schedule interviews. Selected students start working on industry projects with GitHub partner organisations and join the premier GitHub Octernship community.

Talking about the new programme, Arkodyuti Saha, Education Community Manager at GitHub, said,

Imagine working on real-world projects and getting paid for it while being a student. That’s only a part of what Octernships offer. Students also receive hands-on experience and the chance to work on different projects to help them hone a wide range of software development skills, including open-source projects, documentation, design, and testing. Students also get meaningful mentorship from industry experts, the chance to work with other developers, and connect with potential employers from our curated list of registered partners.

Eldad Fux, CEO of Appwrite, said,

We have had a great experience working with the GitHub Octernships pilot program. The intern we selected from the previous year became an Appwrite employee and has consistently exceeded our expectations. The program’s emphasis on real-world projects and evaluation of interns based on their efforts and quality of work allows us to confidently choose the best fit for our team. Overall, we highly recommend this program to other tech companies looking to find top talent with interns

GitHub is the complete developer platform to build, scale, and deliver secure software. Over 100 million people, including developers from 90 of the Fortune 100 companies, use GitHub to build amazing things together across 330+ million repositories.
