Moodle LMS is a free and open-source learning management system which is used by millions of users around the world. Moodle Educators always thrive to improve their workflow to save time and improve their performance. In this post, we will see ‘Grade Me’ block plugin which can be used to save you a lot of time.

Moodle educators need to grade the students assignments submissions as well as the essay type questions. The essay type questions are not graded automatically in Moodle quiz, and need the teacher intervention to grade manually.

The Grade me block shows all the assignments and manual quiz questions (essays and file responses) that have been submitted, but not yet graded. So, you can easily get all the tasks related to grading in a single place and then grade them.

The Grade Me block provides an easy way for teachers to see what needs to be graded in a course or in all of their courses. You can add the block to a course home page and the teacher will have all ungraded assignments listed in the block for that course.

You can also add the block to the site home page and teachers will have all of their courses with ungraded assignments listed in the block.

Please note that the teachers cant add the block to site homepage.

German Hybrid Learning Platform Edurino Raises €10.5M in Series A Round

Edurino, a Munich-based female-founded EdTech startup, recently announced that it has raised €10.5 million in its Series A round led by DN Capital with participation from FJ Labs and Tengelmann Ventures — the early-stage VC formerly aligned to Tengelmann Group. The funding round also witnessed participation from Existing investors btov Partners, Jens Begemann and Emerge Education.

Founded in 2021 by Irene Klemm and Franziska Meyer, Edurino is a hybrid learning platform that offers children from 4 to 8+ years a safe introduction to digital learning by combining a digital learning app, haptic play figures and an ergonomic stylus. The company believes that a diversity of perspectives, ideas and cultures leads to the development of better products. It integrates traditional school competencies like reading, writing, and arithmetic with STEM subjects and beyond – such as logical reasoning, coding, natural science, creativity, and media literacy – into the key competencies necessary to succeed in the 21st century.

With this investment round, the German startup plans to work towards its international expansion in the DACH region. Speaking about the platform, Co-founders of Edurino, Irene Klemm & Franziska Meyer, said in a press statement:

In 10 years time, our children will be working in jobs that do not exist in this form today. To meet this skills gap, we have opened a new digital education chapter with Edurino. Through the magic of games, we want to equip children with the skills and experience to understand and harness the positive power of digitalisation. The strong feedback from thousands of families and the collaboration with our partner kindergartens is driving us to expand Edurino globally.

Edurino claims that over 160 educational institutions use the platform for digital preschool lessons, and over 100,000 products have been sold to families in the DACH region. Last year, the firm signed with over ten major retail partners and online stores in the DACH region. These include a book, electrical and toy retailers, such as Media Markt, Saturn, Müller, Thalia and My Toys. It currently employs a remote team of over 45 people.

Commenting on the fundraising, Investor of DN Capital, Nenad Marovac said:

At DN Capital, we uncover entrepreneurs building global businesses that change industries. Irene and Franziska are precisely the sort of pioneers we love to work with, bringing their passion, expertise and drive to developing a hybrid learning platform that is truly fit for the needs of 21st-century pre-schoolers, grounded in educational theory and offering a safe environment for digital learning. We’re thrilled to be the lead investor at Series A and know this startup will go far.

In February 2022, Edurino raised €3.35 million in a funding round led by btov Partners, with backing from Emerge Education and Fabian and Ferry Heilemann through Pirate Impact.

HRTech Startup HR Signal Raises $1.6M in Pre-Seed Round

HRTech Startup HR Signal Raises $1.6M in Pre-Seed Round
HRTech Startup HR Signal Raises $1.6M in Pre-Seed Round

HR Signal Technology Inc, a Cleveland HRTech platform that helps companies proactively retain their employees by leveraging proprietary insights to foster successful career paths, has recently raised $1.6 million in a pre-seed round led by Gammite Ventures and Tzur Daboosh. The funding round was also joined by Aaron Grossman, CEO and founder of TalentLaunch in Independence, Ohio, the company said in a blog post.

Co-founded by Andrew Spott, Daniel Gilon and, Aaron Goodman, Sagy Cohen, HR Signal is a software-as-a-service platform with a hands-on team of professionals. Its products and services are designed to support one’s organization’s employee retention, workforce planning and culture. The platform’s Workforce Insights Engine delivers value for employees and the organization. The company aims to improve employee career paths to keep companies growing. It uncovers proprietary insights to help employers better understand and nurture their people.

According to Andrew Spott, Co-founder and President, the startup plans to utilize the new capital to hire sales, marketing and customer success workers to bring its software-as-a-service platform to market. Speaking about the company, Co-founder & CEO of HR Signal, Sagy Cohen, said:

We also have to buy a lot of data. Our algorithm processes billions of data points every month. So that’s the third category of (capital) spend. The company, which already has benchmarked 50,000 job positions, uses data and algorithms to predict whether a worker is getting ready to jump ship, giving employers time to take steps to retain the employee. Our first product, which is this predictive retention risk score, helps employers know who to have a stay interview with.

The firm envisions a world where more companies focus on delivering the career paths that their employees need to thrive and reach their career potential. It visualizes a world where people don’t have to keep hopping jobs to find a company culture that supports their growth.

HR Signal’s channel partners include HR consulting firm ERC, which is used by 1,500 companies that want to improve their workplace culture and promote it from within. So far, the platform has been in prolonged soft beta mode to refine its algorithm’s output, and it has worked with employers ranging from 30 people up to 3,600.

According to the founders, the company’s ideal client has at least 100 employees because that gives HR Signal more data to use.

Cuemath Launches ‘Mathfit’ to Help Students Overcome ‘Math Phobia’ During Board Exams

Cuemath, a global math learning platform, has recently launched ‘Mathfit’, a digital handbook that aims to empower students to ace math exams by overcoming their ‘Math Phobia. According to an official statement, the guide has been launched to help students practice math as a life skill and not merely for academic excellence.

In addition, ‘MathFit’ also aims to share simple and effective learning strategies to help students manage math exam priorities efficiently. This handbook comprises topics like relaxation methods, stress management and concentration techniques. Since parents play an essential role in their child’s learning journey, it also informs them how to help children feel more confident while preparing for the examination. The handbook will be populated through EdTech’s social media handles and website and distributed among the parents’ and teachers’ communities for greater accessibility.

Speaking about the development, Chief Executive Officer of Cuemath, Vivek Sunder, said:

A survey conducted by us in 2021 found that the pressure and fear of mathematics among Class 10th students grows significantly during the board exams. The study also highlighted that several students in classes 9th and 10th lack self-belief in their mathematical abilities and how their confidence levels undergo a significant drop during the board exams. Many children’s struggles concerning maths learning inspired us to introduce ‘MathFit.’

Cuemath is backed by Lightrock, Alpha Wave Incubation, Sequoia Capital India, CapitalG (formerly Google Capital), and Manta Ray. In June 2022, the company raised $57 million (around Rs 438 crore) in a funding round led by Alpha Wave, which doubled its valuation to $407 million. The firm, currently in over 80 countries, is certified by Grant Thornton. Its curriculum is also STEM and Google for Education-accredited.

Cuemath, founded in 2013, provides technology-driven after-school math learning programs for KG to 12th-grade students. Experts have designed its course content from premier institutions worldwide to build students’ strong math and coding foundation by sharpening their knowledge of concepts, aptitude and reasoning skills. The startup aims to make the world’s children great at math and create invincible problem-solvers who will go on to solve humanity’s biggest problems.

Moodle Educators – Now create face to face type debate activity in Moodle course

Moodle Educators - Now create face to face type debate activity in Moodle course
Moodle Educators - Now create face to face type debate activity in Moodle course

Using debates in the classroom provide students the opportunity to work in a collaborative and cooperative group setting. By having students discuss and organize their points of view for one side of an argument they are able to discover new information and put knowledge into action. Classroom debates help students learn through friendly competition, examine controversial topics and “strengthen skills in the areas of leadership, interpersonal influence, teambuilding, group problem solving, and oral presentation”

Now, you can easily create debates in Moodle course using the new Debate Activity Moodle plugin. Debate is a Moodle activity which allows students to debate in a given topic inside Moodle.

It is a usual activity in any face-to-face class that moderators or teacher or even employees are divided into group and they are asked to give their opinion or debate on a given topic. This plugin is the approach to take that whole scenario inside Moodle.

You can download the latest version of the Debate activity plugin from the official plugins repository here. You can follow this guide to learn how to install a Moodle plugin. Once installed, you can easily start using the Debate activity in your Moodle course as a regular activity.

Debate activity allows you to create multiple teams for positive and negative side for a group of users. You will need to use the groups feature inside the course, create groups and use those groups as a part of each team.

As an educator you can control the type of responses from the users like:

  • Unlimited response – users can add as many positive and negative response as they want.
  • Allow one response on one side – only one response is allowed on any one side, either positive or negative.
  • Allow one response on each side – allow anyone to respond either on the positive or negative side.
  • Use debate teams – use teams feature instead which will control these for individual teams.

In addition, the following options are available for activity completion settings:

  • User viewing the debate activity
  • User submitting the required number of debate responses.

Kenyan HR-payroll provider Workpay secures $2.6m in pre-Series A funding round

Kenyan HR-payroll provider Workpay secures $2.6m in pre-Series A funding round

Workpay, a Kenyan HR payroll start-up co-founded by chief executive Paul Kimani and COO Jackson Kungu, has secured Ksh 342 million (about $2.6 million) funding in a pre-Series A round. The funding round saw the participation of Launch Africa Ventures, Saviu Ventures, Acadian Ventures, PROPARCO, Fondation Botnar, Kara Ventures, and Axian Group Norrsken.

The company provides employers with a platform to process employee salaries, benefits, file taxes, and keep track of their attendance and leave days. Workpay, which was launched in 2019, also enables employees to have their own app where they receive and view their pay slips, make expense requests, and apply for leave days.

The Kenyan HR payroll startup will soon roll out its services in 40 countries in Africa, nearly double its current reach, following $2.7 million pre-Series A funding raised from Launch Africa, Saviu Ventures, Acadian Ventures, Proparco, Fondation Botnar, Kara Ventures, Axian, P1 Ventures and Norrsken. The YC-backed startup (W20) previously raised $2.1 million seed funding in 2020.

Workpay’s co-founder and CEO, Paul Kimani, said:

On the tech side, we have integrated with nearly everyone who is processing payments to allow us to send money to as many countries in Africa as possible. Non-tech means we have established a presence in these countries, and have partners that allow us to be compliant, which is very important

He further added:

We are a full-stack HR Payroll company, and we help employees to manage their people and pay them. And ours is a very neat platform that processes payrolls, and helps employers to be compliant. As an employer you are able to pay employees wherever they are, and in their preferred accounts — they don’t have to be forced to open accounts with specific banks just because the employer banks there — and file taxes too.

Thomas Otter, general partner at Acadian Ventures, said in a statement:

Workpay is building a top-notch product, meeting the specific needs for HR and payroll in Sub-Saharan Africa. The addressable market in the region is growing rapidly and HR and payroll systems provide the foundation for fair and accurate pay. When combined with advances in mobile payments, solutions like Workpay can have a positive impact on businesses and society.
