Moodle LMS allows you to extend the functionality by using Moodle plugins. There are more than 2050 plugins in the official Moodle plugins directory. By using plugins, you can extend Moodle’s functionality to meet your organizations learning goals. In this post, we will be discussing about Consent Form Moodle plugin.

The Consent Form plugin allows you to hide/reveal course elements in dependence of a consent form agreement/refusal by students. It is very helpful if you want to keep a record of student’s consent for example to mention that the work submitted in the assignment is their own and is not plagiarized from any other source. There are many other use cases possible for this plugin.

You can download the latest version of the Consent form plugin from the Moodle plugins directory here. In case you are new to Moodle, please follow this guide to learn how to install a Moodle plugin. Once installed you can start using the plugin straight away.

When you add the Consent form Activity to your Moodle course, you can see the options to mention the consent text which the students need to agree. Then you can choose the course activities/resources which shall be hidden until the student agrees to the consent form.

Kindly note that this plugin needs ‘Enablecompletion’ setting to be turned on at site level as well as course level.

This plugin seems to be serving a specific purpose of recording student’s consent which can be a declaration statement. During testing on my local development Moodle site, I found that this plugin is able to do its job pretty nicely. You can also setup a revoke button in addition to Agree/Refuse button which allows the options to students in case they change their mind.

Moodle 4.1 - Edit Questions easily with the new Inline editing feature

Moodle 4.1 is the latest version of the Moodle LMS which is released a few days ago. It is packed with a lot of exciting features and updates to make your online teaching experience better than ever. With a focus on improving the User Experience, Moodle 4.1 has continued the improvements started in last version. The Moodle 4.1 version improves the UX in Database, Gradebook and many other areas.

There are many useful improvements added in Moodle 4.1 such as the Single Report view as well as the integration of new TinyMCE editor. In this post, we will have a look at another new feature which allows you to edit questions directly from the questions bank page.

The latest Moodle version has the ability to edit question titles inline along with new Last used and Last modified columns. This is a small but very handy feature as it will be helpful for the teachers to make minor changes without leaving the question bank. The last used and modified by columns are helpful in understanding the question usage and user details.

You can access the question bank via course navigation on the main course page by clicking on “More” > “Question bank”. When you are on the Question bank page, you can simply click the ‘Pencil icon’ in the Question column and edit it directly. Once you are done, just click Enter to save your changes.

What are the other new features in Moodle 4.1 which made you excited? What are the other new features which you would like to see in upcoming version of Moodle LMS? Please share with us in the comments section below.

The new Moodle 4.1 is the latest version of Moodle LMS and is packed with exciting User Experience updates. Moodle 4.1 version is the Long Term Support version so many Moodle site administrators might be looking to upgrade to it in coming weeks. In this post, we will have a look at another new feature – Single View report, introduced in Moodle 4.1 which will be handy for the educators.

The new feature introduced in Moodle 4.1 is known as Single View report in Gradebook which offers a simpler and cleaner view of the course students as well as the graded activities. The Single View report allows a course teacher to view either all the grades of one single student or a single grade item for all students. You can search the Single View report by user, group or grade item.

In the Editing mode, you can also take bulk actions like Overriding the grades, Exclude the grades or Inserting grades. The report offers a view to All course activities as well as Course Total grades. Now let’s see how you can use the Single View grade report in Moodle 4.1.

Single View Report

To access the Single View grade report, you need to navigate to Course > Secondary Navigation Bar > Grades. On the left corner, expand the dropdown and select Single View report. You will see a report like below:

Moodle 4.1 - Check out the new Single view grade report

You can select Users or Grade Items and the corresponding filters will be automatically updated. For Users, you will see a Search field to Select a specific user and see his/her grades. For Grade Items, you will see a filter to select a grade item (this will show all graded activities as well as the course total grades). You can also take bulk actions from the Actions drop down menu as shown below:

It seems to be a pretty good addition to Moodle with such a handy and cleaner grade report. It will definitely be helpful for Moodle educators to manage their course grades easily.

Moodle 4.1 – TinyMCE Editor is available in Moodle

Moodle 4.1 - TinyMCE Editor is available in Moodle

Moodle 4.1 is the latest released version of Moodle LMS. The new version is packed with new exciting features which will make your online learning experience much better and engaging. With a focus on improving the User Experience, Moodle 4.1 comes with a lot of improvements focused on Database, Gradebook and other areas. In addition there is another change which allows Moodle Admins to use the TinyMCE Editor on Moodle site.

TinyMCE is a rich text editor which gives you total control over your rich text editing. It is one of the most popular text editors in the world. It allows users to create formatted content within a user-friendly interface. With this new addition, Moodle users will be able to use the latest version of the TinyMCE Editor.

Atto text editor which was designed as a lightweight, accessible, in-house editor for Moodle, will be deprecated in the upcoming version of Moodle LMS. It is getting difficult to maintain for Moodle HQ team since it was using deprecated technologies. So, a decision was taken to use the TinyMCE as the default text editor in upcoming Moodle versions. (check out this forum thread). The default text editor for Moodle 4.1 is still Atto which will be replaced by TinyMCE in Moodle 4.2 version.

TinyMCE is enabled by default in Moodle 4.1 version otherwise the admin can enable it from Administration > Site administration > Plugins > Text editors > Manage editors. Once it is enabled, the users can select the TinyMCE from the User menu > Preferences > Editor preferences.

TinyMCE also supports equation editor, media recording as well as other modern rich text editing like color, table keyboard shortcuts etc.

What is your reaction with Atto making way for the TinyMCE editor in Moodle? Are you happy with this decision from Moodle HQ? Please share with us in the comments section below.

Moodle Educators – How to force a language in activities

Moodle Educators - How to force a language in activities

Moodle – world’s most popular open source Learning management System (LMS) has got a brand new version released recently. The Moodle 4.1 version (which is an LTS version) is packed with new features and enhancements to make your life as educators more easier than ever. In this post we will have a look at one of the new features of Moodle 4.1 which will help you to force a language in the course activities.

The Moodle 4.1 version is mainly focused on improving the User Experience which includes improvements in Database, Gradebook and other areas. There is one small but very handy new feature added in Moodle 4.1 which allows you to force the Activity Language.

In earlier Moodle versions, there was a setting to force the language on course level. But based on the forum discussion, it was suggested to have this setting available at activity level also. You can check out the whole discussion in this forum thread.

The use case for this special setting might be in language teaching courses where you are teaching Language A to a group of persons who belong to Language B. To get started you can set the course language to Language B and as they start learning about new language, you can use the Force Language at activity level.

In order to use this new feature, you must have another language pack installed on your Moodle portal. Then, when you start adding an activity in the Edit Mode, under Common Module Settings section, you will see a field for Force Language.

Have you started planning to upgrade your site to Moodle 4.1 version? What are the new features which makes you excited? Please let us know in the comments section below.
