Moodle Educators - Use Multiblock plugin to combine multiple blocks into single

Moodle LMS is one of the most popular open source Learning management System (LMS) in the world. Moodle Plugins are one of the most easiest way to extend Moodle features. With more than 2060 plugins in the official plugins directory it is easier to extend Moodle features. In this post, I will share about Multiblock plugin which can help you to combine multiple blocks in a single area.

In Moodle terminology, Blocks are the items that a teacher can add to the left or right of a Moodle course page. They provide extra information or links to aid learning like quiz results, a calendar, HTML block etc. However, having one block for a single purpose can eat up a lot of space on your course page.

The Multiblock plugin addresses this issue by allowing you to combine multiple blocks into a single area. You can combine them in Tabs, Accordion with several preset layouts bundled with the plugin. The best thing is that you can use Multiblock on the dashboard page to combine multiple blocks and declutter it.

The Multiblock plugins offers the following styles of presentations:

  • Accordion
  • Carousel
  • 2-column (split 33%/66%, split 66%/33%, split 50%/50%)
  • Dropdown
  • Tabbed list
  • Vertical tabs / pills

You can download the Multiblock plugin from the official Moodle plugins directory here. Once downloaded you can follow this guide to learn how to install a Moodle plugin. Once it is installed, it is fairly easy to add it to any course page or dashboard page.

You need to click the Gear icon > Manage Contents to add sub-Blocks to the Multiblock instance. You can choose from any block installed on your Moodle site.

I personally feel that this plugin can be very helpful to declutter your course page and dashboard which can help students to focus more on their learning.

Blockchain-based TheRollNumber clocks $165,000 to enhance operations

BlockChain-based certificates verification platform TheRollNumber has raised $165,000 as a part of its seed round led by Inflection Point Ventures. The company plans to use the funds to reinforce the technology stack, improve the platform, and make greater use of data stacks, as well as to expand the team and operations.

Established by Sai Raghavendra Sharma in 2020, TheRollNumber provides backend-as-a-service and software-as-a-service solutions for entities to verify, validate, and issue blockchain-based credentials. The company boasts that it can complete background checks in just 15 minutes.

Sai Raghavendra Sharma, founder, TheRollNumber, said.

TheRollNumber aims to provide a credential management system to individuals. TheRollNumber is looking to build a system which not only enables digitisation and verification but also lets users or Individuals know “Who, why, when and how are the credentials being utilised” which intends to help the problem of identity and credential theft.

Vikram Ramasubramanian, partner at Inflection Point Ventures, said:

Centralization of sensitive information led us to invest in TheRollNumber. The time-saving and cost-effective approach of this company has determined us to back their vision

TheRollNumber intends to concentrate its efforts on the background verification ecosystem as there are very few amalgamated platforms that focus on all the stakeholders, i.e., employers, universities, and individuals in the ecosystem.

Providing secure, provable education credentials reduces fraud or over-claiming qualifications on resumes. Plus, the evolving working world means that people have to retrain every few years, and need to be able to prove the skills they’ve acquired in non-college environments. They also aim to assist users who lack control over their certificates and need to carry all certifications and customizations. The platform offers BAAS and SAAS services for employers and banks to verify and issue credentials, as well as colleges and certification bodies and individuals such as students and employers.

Use semantic visual components in Moodle Course to reduce learners’ cognitive load

As per the definition the ‘Cognitive Load’ refers to the amount of information the working memory can hold at any one given time. The cognitive load theory takes a scientific approach to the design of learning materials, so you can present information at a pace and level of complexity that people can easily understand. In this post, we will see about Components for Learning (C4L) project

Components for Learning is an open project aiming to provide teachers and educators with a set of visual components that fit the complex needs of learning contents. The C4L project comes with different types of components which helps you as a teacher to meet the pedagogical needs for your learning content.

As on date you can choose out of the following components:

    • Due Date
    • Estimated time
    • Procedural Context
  • Evaluative Components
    • Expected Feedback
    • Grading Value
  • Helper Components
    • All-Purpose cards

The project comes with a Moodle Plugin for both Atto text editor as well as TinyMCE text editor. The plugin provides a set of visual components designed explicitly for Learning based on the C4L project.

You can download the Components for Learning (C4L) plugin for TinyMCE here and for Atto here. Once installed you can use it anywhere where the text editor pops up. You can simple click the C4L icon in the editor toolbar and add the required component in your text.

If you are looking to reduce your learners cognitive load then I will definitely recommend you to have a look at the Components for Learning project and the Moodle plugins. It can help you add visual components which fit the complex needs of learning contents.

LinkedIn India Launches Campus Knowledge Programme to Make Students Future-Ready

LinkedIn India Launches Campus Knowledge Programme to Make Students Future-Ready

LinkedIn, one of the most trusted networks for building connections, enhancing networking opportunities and finding the right career, has announced the launch of the Campus Knowledge Programme in India. This programme aims at connecting students with industry experts to help them launch their careers and be future-ready.

India is one of the youngest countries in the world, where millions of graduates join the workforce every year. The IT industry hired over 3.8 lakh freshers in FY22, following which the workforce share of the Gen Z students went up to nearly 20%. According to LinkedIn’s Workforce Report data, around 37% of the hires on average across industries in 2022 were Gen Z (compared to just 7% in 2018).

As part of the programme, the platform has onboarded 107 expert creators to share their learnings, insights, and inspire students on the platform. They belong to sectors such as edtech, HR, gaming, and public policy and include the likes of Naiyya Saggi, Co-Founder of Good Glamm Group; Alok Kejriwal, Co-founder of Games2win; Supriya Paul, Co-founder of Josh Talks; Nandini Chatterjee, CMO of PwC; and Rashi Goel, Director, Marketing of Amazon; and career coach like Prakash Iyer.

In addition, the programme comprises student creators from 116 colleges across India. To select the campus creators, it has partnered with AIESEC India and sifted through hundreds of applications. And this group is diverse — from engineering to law and from arts to MBA. The two groups – campus creators and experts – will help mobilise the student community to spark conversations on topics that matter to them, the obstacles they face, the career decisions they make and the opportunities they grab.

Commenting on the initiative, the Digital Sales leader of IBM, Deepali Naair, said:

“This programme will provide practical tips, examples and work plan to students. They would get guidance on how to prepare for the next leg of their journey towards a career. This would mean what choices to make and how to execute towards those career choices.

Similarly career coach Sridevi Ravichandran said:

“Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of what employers are seeking in potential candidates, including the skills necessary to succeed in a constantly evolving job market. Additionally, students will benefit from efficient utilization of time and resources, a supportive network of peers and mentors, and increased motivation and engagement in their job search, career development and become future-ready.

Through the next six months, LinkedIn Editorial will support the creators by providing virtual training and continuously offering resources and tips — equipping them to share relevant insights that can help students get started on their professional journey.
