Mote App – the voice feedback notes app has introduced a brand new product for educators. Conker.AI the new product from Mote team helps you to create reading comprehension quizzes in less than 1 minute. Conker uses artificial intelligence to analyse your piece of content and produce the quizzes out of that or on the topic you choose. In this post, I will show what is Conker and how you can use it as an educator.

Conker allows you to create multiple choice or true false questions easily by using the simple form. You can also paste your own source material to create questions out of it. The product is still in Beta stage, so there might be chances of some errors in the correct answer. Hence, I would advise you to please use Conker with utmost care and use it for practice questions till a stable version is released.

What is Conker.AI?

Conker is a new product from the makers of Mote App. It allows you to create Quizzes, Fill in the Blank or Reading Comprehension with Multiple Choice or True False questions. The best part is that you can choose any topic and it will create the questions based on the selected grade or you can paste your own source material. Capability to upload your files or sharing a URL will be offered in coming weeks.

The output questions can be generated in multiple languages making it a versatile option for the educators. You can export the generated quiz through Google Forms or else Share as a PDF file. You can also share the link to the generated questions with your team members.

Glasgow-Based Video Interviewing Startup Willo Raises $1.8M to Expand Its Operations

Glasgow-Based Video Interviewing Startup Willo Raises $1.8M to Expand Its Operations
Glasgow-Based Video Interviewing Startup Willo Raises $1.8M to Expand Its Operations

Willo, a Glasgow-based video interview company, announced an expansion of operations in the U.S. The video interviewing company, has recently raised over £1.5 million ($1.8 million) in a funding round led by 1818 Venture Capital, a Guernsey-based early-stage tech investment firm, bringing its total raised to $2.5 million.

The cash injection – from high net-worth investors including ex-Freeserve PLC COO Mark Danby, ex-BT talent chief Susan McRoberts, and entrepreneur and Santander Global Head of Digital Mobility Solutions Jose Ignacio Puente – brings the overall investment in the HRTech firm to more than £1 million.

Founded in 2018, Willow aims “to connect people with opportunity using technology.” The company helps candidates and recruiters by simplifying the hiring process using its candidate screening platform.

The company plans to expand its operations in the US. It is also planning to open a new headquarters in New York City. In addition, the firm expects to double its headcount for global recruitment. According to a report, it also plans to bring on 25 new international employees to “drive further growth in the UK and Asian markets.

Co-founded by Euan Cameron and Andrew Wood in 2018, Willo aims to connect people with opportunities using technology. The startup helps candidates and recruiters by simplifying the hiring process using its candidate screening platform. It removes bias and increases inclusivity with a structured and consistent approach, creating more opportunities for everyone.

The platform is accessible on any device, anywhere in the world. It is also committed to positively impacting the environment and donates 1% of its revenues to carbon removal programs globally through Stripe Climate.

Speaking about the capital raised, Co-founder of Willo, Euan Cameron, said:

Traditional hiring methods are broken; businesses today know that they need to look beyond degrees and qualifications to find the best people – a video is a far better way to get to know someone than an application form, cover letter or CV. How businesses hire staff has changed forever, and as we prepare to move beyond the pandemic, we find ourselves in an environment where distance, borders and countries no longer matter. Talent is the only currency that matters. This investment comes at an exciting and crucial time for Willo as we target further expansion in key markets – including the USA and Australia – and the calibre of investors shows the faith that exists in what we are doing.

Cameron further said:

Willo unlocks the potential to recruit in any market unbound by geographical barriers, ensuring businesses grow with the right people for part-time, permanent or project-based roles. The investment we have received demonstrates the belief in that model, and we are tremendously excited to grow our team in new markets to help businesses grow with the right people. An increasing number of evangelists are spreading the word about our platform and how it takes the pain out of the hiring process by providing so much more than a CV or cover letter ever could.

The news comes on the heels of a recent (December 2022) investment from 1818 Venture Capital, which raised the company’s total funding to $2.5 million. Investors believe the time is right for companies like Willo to build up their business.

Richard Avery-Wright, Founding Partner of 1818 Venture Capital, added:

For obvious reasons, the adoption of both asynchronous and distributed working and hiring practices has accelerated over the last few years. We are still early in the adoption curve for many novel solutions, and most businesses are yet to adapt and reap the benefits of these new approaches.

Turnitin Announces AI Writing Detector & AI Writing Resource Center for Educators

Turnitin Announces AI Writing Detector & AI Writing Resource Center for Educators
Turnitin Announces AI Writing Detector & AI Writing Resource Center for Educators

One of the best plagiarism detector tool – Turnitin has successfully developed an AI writing detector that, in its lab, identifies 97 percent of ChatGPT and GPT3 authored writing, with a very low, less than 1/100 false positive rate.

The company plans to add this functionality to its core writing integrity products as early as April 2023, according to a press statement. The new functionality will operate within the existing Turnitin workflow so that educators will be able to analyze content and use feedback tools in the same user experience they have today.

Turnitin is a plagiarism detection service commonly used by universities, including law schools. Their software produces a percentage score identifying similarities with existing sources. The recent boom in AI chatbots has triggered the company to start its own AI Innovation Lab in a bid to outsmart the bots and detect the use of AI writing tools.

Turnitin also published an AI writing resource page to support educators with teaching resources and to report its progress in developing AI writing detection features. The newly launched AI writing resource page is publicly available and will be updated regularly with information about Turnitin’s progress in bringing detection features to market including how they are performing in its research and development lab. Turnitin experts in pedagogy and instruction will also contribute to an expanded library of resources to help guide K-12 teachers and higher education faculty on how to adjust to an academic environment where AI writing is used. Additionally, demo and preview videos will be regularly posted.

Speaking about the development, Annie Chechitelli, Chief Product Officer of Turnitin, said,

Based on how our detection technology is performing in our lab and with a significant number of test samples, we are confident that Turnitin’s AI writing detection capabilities will give educators information to help them decide how to best handle work that may have been influenced by AI writing tools. Equally important to our confidence in the technology is making the information usable and helpful and in a format that educators can use. We are being very deliberate in releasing a detector that is highly accurate and trained on the largest dataset of academic writing. It is essential that our detector and any others limit false positives that may impact student engagement or motivation.

In a recent YouTube video, Turnitin developer David Adamson demonstrated how the new software will work. After inputing an essay written by ChatGPT and edited by himself, the system calculated that 50% of the essay was produced by AI, even identifying that 22 of the 43 sentences were not of human origin.

Adding further about the technology, Eric Wang, VP of AI for Turnitin, said,

We have developed state-of-the-art AI writing detection systems using recent advances in deep learning transformer architecture – the same technology that powers GPT-3 and other large language models (LLMs). Our AI writing preview has been trained on academic writing with high efficacy rates and can identify 97 percent of AI writing, with a very low 1/100 false positive rate. Launching it within our existing flagship products allows us to provide AI writing detection within the existing workflows that our customers are accustomed to, without having to copy/paste text or upload papers to a new, unverified third party.

Chris Caren, CEO of Turnitin, said,

For over 20 years, Turnitin has been a trusted partner of educators, giving insights into student writing, and helping to uphold the standards of academic integrity. Detecting current AI-generated texts and those written by the next generation of AI writers is going to require constant evolution, working closely with educators while training on available, relevant datasets. We are reassured by the conversation around detection and other efforts to understand how AI writing impacts education, business, and every other aspect of society. There are risks to AI writing being used improperly, and it is essential that good detection technology is available across all sectors.

The issue of AI-based cheating is a hot topic at the moment, with many universities reassessing their rules concerning assessments.

Chamilo 1.11.18 released – Check out the top 10 features

Chamilo 1.11.18 released - Check out the top 10 features

Chamilo is a free and open-source Learning Management System (LMS) used for delivering online courses and training programs. Chamilo is designed to be user-friendly and flexible, and it can be customized to meet the specific needs of different organizations and institutions.

Recently, Chamilo version 1.11.18 is released which is a minor version release  for bug fixes and security improvements. But the latest version is packed with many exciting features. Here are the top 10 features in Chamilo 1.11.18 version:

  • AI Plugin – This new feature incorporates in Chamilo all the power of OpenAI/ChatGPT making the process of creating test type questions simpler. You can now ask ChatGPT from the tests interface to create a test using the ailken format; once the questions are generated, they will appear in the Chamilo format completely editable and ready for you to review.
  • Best attempt of a test in lessons – You’ve added a test to a lesson. The test has 3 attempts. A student gets a 4, an 8, and finally a 6. Now you can finally tell the system to only take into account the best of the three attempts made by the student. That way they can use all their attempts and improve with practice without fear of getting a lower score on the last attempt.
  • Progress bar for your larger files – No more worries about how long it will take or what percentage of a file has already been uploaded. Now, with the new progress bar for heavy file uploads, you will always know what stage the upload of your file is at.
  • Account Locking – Security in the digital world is becoming increasingly important. That’s why we’ve added a functionality that you can activate from configuration.php (‘login_max_attempt_before_blocking_account’) which will allow you to lock an account when too many failed access attempts have occurred.
  • Improvements in the Attendance Tool – There are many trainings, especially in the context of hybrid training that require very specific follow-up. With this in mind, we have improved the attendance registration tool by adding the possibility to add comments, classify by types of absences, durations and the possibility to add signatures in the attendances.
  • Improvements in xAPI Support – Experience API or xAPI is a software specification for e-learning that allows content and LMSs to communicate with each other so that all kinds of learning experiences can be recorded and tracked. In this new version of Chamilo, we have improved compatibility so that your content can interact without any issues.
  • Forums in Sessions – In the course configuration section, forums, we have added the ”share_forums_in_sessions” option to show all categories, forums, threads regardless of session_id filtering (so that all forums from all sessions are visible in all sessions).
  • Provider Mode for LTI – Transform Chamilo activities into IMS/LTI activities that you can share with another portal compatible with LTI. For example, share the SCORM contents hosted in your virtual campus with other external portals, whether they use Chamilo or another LMS (as long as it supports LTI).
  • Improvement in Exercise Connectivity – As an administrator of your campus, you will be able to add the “quiz_keep_alive_ping_interval” function to avoid disconnections while a student answers an exercise. Avoid them being left halfway through or that all the exam data is not saved with this improvement.
  • Portfolio Creation Tool – The eportfolio tool allows students to create posts based on a pre-defined template to help them get started with activities. They just need to click on the template on the left side and the template will appear on the right side for them to edit and complete the post with their own data.

You can download the latest version from the official download page here – https://chamilo.org/en/download/

Employers and employees want this changed with urgency and Rezolve.ai is powering this new future.

Bhavanipratap Rana, Investment Adviser, SIG Venture Capital, said,

We invested in Rezolve.ai to support the founder’s vision of leveraging rapid improvements in AI capability that allow incumbent support platforms to transition from being just a process workstream to an intelligent intermediation layer that reduces human involvement. This functionality can become the de facto level one support inside organisations — not just for IT & HR but for every support function needed across organizations. Rapid growth, strong customer and analyst feedback, and product superiority sets Rezolve.ai to fulfill its product vision.
