Sydney-based edtech platform, Cleverbean Secured $200,000, Preventing Teach Burnout

Sydney-based edtech platform, Cleverbean, which helps Australian teachers reduce the risk of exhaustion, has received $200,000 in seed funding from Skalata Ventures as it seeks to expand its offering by incorporating AI-assisted feedback into its platform.

The platform offers instructors and institutions research-based and evidence-based learning materials covering the entire Australian English curriculum from kindergarten to year six.

Founded by Lucy Chambers and Alina Hunter, the platform currently solves three critical problems for educators by providing the best quality materials for teachers, making them accessible and quick to find, and ensuring that every student receives personalised feedback.

Speaking with Business News Australia, Alina Hunter says,

“The raise will help bolster the platform’s teacher memberships and implement a new AI offering designed to help provide real-time feedback to students.”

Hunter explains.

“The new features and technologies we are developing are all about providing students with feedback, particularly in the writing sense. During the lecture, 95 per cent of students will not receive feedback on their writing ability. “This is due to the complexity of the skill, as well as the fact that a teacher can’t provide precise feedback to 20 to 40 students in a class,”

According to Cleverbean, 96% of educators who use the platform are already saving time on lesson planning. The platform’s development has been predominantly driven by word-of-mouth referrals from teachers, with thousands of educators paying out of pocket for the edtech.

The technology has been built after analysing hundreds of pieces of classroom work, teachers’ feedback and their experience level. There has been a work trail of interviews with school leaders and teachers to build this technology that supports teachers and doesn’t make them feel like a replacement. [They’re] all consistently saying this helps them fill a huge gap, particularly in the area of student writing,” Hunter adds.

Moodle LMS allows you to easily extend the online education tools by using the Moodle Plugins. The vast collection of Moodle plugins (more than 2,150+ plugins now) allows you to extend the features. In this post, we will see the Embed questions filter plugin which allows you to display interactive questions from the question bank embedded in the page.

The Embed Question Filter plugin is a Moodle plugin that allows educators to embed quiz questions directly within their course content. Instead of navigating to a separate quiz page, students can interact with the questions without leaving the current page. This seamless integration enhances engagement and interactivity, making the learning experience more dynamic and immersive.

With the Embed Question Filter plugin, teachers can embed questions in various Moodle activities, such as resources, forums, labels, and even other quiz questions. This flexibility enables educators to integrate interactive elements directly into their teaching materials, enhancing student engagement.

You can get the latest version of the Embed Question filter plugin from the official plugin’s repository here. You need to install the accompanying Atto editor plugin also from this link. After installing the plugin, log in to your Moodle site as an administrator and navigate to the Site Administration section. Locate the “Plugins” tab and click on “Filters.” Find the “Embed Question Filter” plugin and enable it.

The Atto editor need to be configured to show the new button. Go to Site administration > Plugins > Text editors > Atto HTML editor > Atto toolbar settings and in the Toolbar config field, find the line that starts ‘insert =’, and add ’embedquestion’ to the list.

How to use the Embed Questions Filter plugin?

Go to anywhere where you can input HTML. For example, start adding a Page to a course, or start writing a forum post.

  • In the editor toolbar, click the insert question button.
  • Select a question category (e.g. ‘Embeddable questions’).
  • Select a question (e.g. ‘Test question1’).
  • All the other options can be left as default, or changed as you wish.
  • Click the Embed question button.

Best Practices for Using the Embed Question Filter Plugin

To maximize the effectiveness of the Embed Question Filter plugin, consider the following best practices:

  • Align with Learning Objectives: Ensure that the embedded questions align with your course’s learning objectives and outcomes. Design questions that target specific knowledge or skills you want students to acquire. This alignment ensures that the interactivity enhances the learning process effectively.
  • Maintain Clarity and Relevance: Craft clear and concise questions that are easily understandable to students. Avoid ambiguity and ensure that the questions remain relevant to the corresponding content. Clarity helps students engage with the material and understand the concepts effectively.

The Embed Question Filter plugin is a valuable addition to Moodle, offering educators the ability to embed interactive quiz questions directly into course content. By enabling seamless integration, immediate feedback, adaptive learning, and a variety of question types, this plugin enhances engagement and interactivity in the online learning environment. Implementing the Embed Question Filter plugin empowers educators to create dynamic and immersive learning experiences for their students, fostering deeper understanding and knowledge retention.

Course-Sharing Platform Acadeum Raises $12M to Expand Its Operations

Course-Sharing Platform Acadeum Raises $12M to Expand Its Operations

Acadeum, a Texas-based course-sharing platform that helps colleges and universities address these critical challenges to thrive in an era of profound change, has raised $11.92 million in its Series B funding round led by Green Street Impact Partners, with participation from ECMC Group’s Education Impact Fund and Pearson Ventures. With the fresh funds, the company intends to expand its operations and business reach.

Acadeum powers the world’s largest course-sharing network, with over 460 institutions working together to extend its reach and broaden its impact. Institutions can quickly embark on innovative solutions to future-proof their programs in the dynamic academic landscape through its vast academic network and best-in-class technology platform. The startup has also partnered with Coursera to allow institutions to expand their offerings of professional certificates aligned with immediate workforce needs.

Founded by David Daniels and Joshua Pierce, Acadeum (formerly College Consortium) helps colleges and universities create academic partnerships with like-minded institutions to support student progress and equitable access to workforce opportunity. The company aims to bring online courses to colleges, focusing on those that have yet to launch any. It creates groups of colleges, called consortia, to share their online courses to save on costs associated with starting a new online course or program. Popular courses on the platform cover general education subjects for Spanish, psychology, and algebra.

Chief Executive Officer of Acadeum, David Daniels, shared about the platform:

Today’s learners are older and more likely to be parents or working than at any point in our nation’s history. The new majority of learners are putting pressure on institutions to align course offerings with the realities of their schedules and responsibilities beyond the classroom. At a moment when some are questioning the role and relevance of American colleges, we’re building tools to leverage the collective strength of our nation’s higher education system to unlock new opportunities for both institutions—and students.

Managing Partner of Green Street Impact Partners, Amy Bevilacqua, commented:

This is about matching the vast potential of existing, high-quality courses taught by talented, engaging faculty with learners who often struggle to access the classes they need to graduate on time and persist. Acadeum is changing the game for institutions working to fulfil and expand their academic mission. It enables learners to chart a more direct—and affordable—pathway through college.

Moodle teachers - Create Crossword questions easily using this new plugin

Moodle LMS makes you feel comfortable with all the tools to meet your online learning requirements. With Moodle plugins you can easily add new features & functionality to extend Moodle’s features. In this post, we will see about a new question type plugin which allows you to create crossword questions.

The new plugin named as Crossword Question type is developed by Tim Hunt – Software Developer at Open University & maintainer of the Moodle Quiz Module. The crossword question type plugin allows you to set up crosswords questions in your Moodle Quiz.

The crosswords questions are an extremely popular & fun way to unleash students learning. Students need to figure out the correct words fitting in the given space with the hints given for each part.

The Crossword question type plugin can be obtained from the Moodle plugins repository here. Once installed you can use the Crossword question type. It is a simple text-based crossword question, but it currently requires manual design of the word grid.

So, it will take you sometime to learn how to create a word grid manually in this question. But when you learn it will be worth investing the time.

You can then use these crossword questions in your quiz for letting students practice for the examination. Additionally, you can make use of the Embedded Questions filter to embed this question in other areas of Moodle.

It seems an interesting question type with a lot of potential to be used in gamified learning courses. What are the other plugins which you are using to create Gamified courses in Moodle. Please share with us in the comment s section below.

Moodle Admins – How to increase file upload size?

Moodle Admins - How to increase file upload size?
Moodle Admins - How to increase file upload size?

Moodle LMS is used by more than 360 million users around the world. It is one of the most popular open source Learning Management System (LMS) in the world. After initial configuration many Moodle users often ask the question “How to increase the file upload size limit” in Moodle. Today, we will see in detail how you can update the file upload size limit for your Moodle LMS.

To begin with, you need to understand the following chronology to understand how these limit affects the Moodle LMS. The sequence of file size limit is as follows:

  1. Server level
  2. Moodle site level
  3. Course level
  4. Activity level

It means that as a Moodle Administrator you can increase the file size limit maximum up to the limit which is set at the Server Level. Similarly, the course limits are restricted by the limit defined at the Moodle LMS site level and so on.

Now, since Moodle LMS can be running on different types of servers e.g. Apache, Nginx etc. So, we will see just basic ways which will be similar across difference server environments.

Before updating the file size upload limit, first of all you should visit the Site administration > Security > Site security settings > Maximum uploaded file size to check the current limit set at the server level. In case, it is lesser that your requirements you need to access your server to increase that.

Edit the PHP.ini file

Since most of the servers are using Apache so we will be modifying the PHP.ini file. First visit the phpinfo and locate the php.ini file running on your Moodle server. Then you need to edit that file and update the following fields and increase the limit:

  • post_max_size
  • upload_max_filesize
  • max_execution_time

Once you have saved the file, you need to restart Apache/MySQL instance on your server.

Moodle LMS Level

In case the limit is higher on your server level but still you are seeing a lower limit on your courses, then its time to check the limit on Moodle level. In order to do that, you need to visit Site administration > Security > Site security settings > Maximum uploaded file size  and increase the limit.

Course Level

In case you need to update the settings at your course level, you need to visit the Course Settings page and increase the limit under the section – Files & Uploads.

Activity Level

For each activity, you can also define the maximum file upload limit e.g. Assignment you can increase it under the Submission settings section. For Forums, you can increase it under the Attachments & Word Count section.

I hope you will be able to set the file upload size limits after following this guide. In case you are still facing any problems, please feel free to post them in the comments section below.
