Moodle launches new Product Advisory Group (PAG) to help guide and develop the roadmap

Moodle HQ team has taken the new initiative and launched the new Product Advisory Group (PAG) for Moodle LMS – Community.  In a recent announcement on Moodle community forums, the Moodle HQ team announced the creation of new Product Advisory Group for Moodle LMS. This new group will join the existing PAG groups, the Moodle Workplace PAG (for Moodle Premium Certified Partners) and the Moodle LMS – Partners PAG (for all Moodle Certified Partners).

In the announcement, Brett Dalton – announced the creation of new PAG for Moodle LMS. According to the announcement, the new PAG will be open to all interested parties, and will be focused on several key activities:

  • Providing a forward view of the existing Moodle LMS Roadmap.
  • Facilitating the ideation of new initiatives and functionality with direct input from the community to influence the roadmap moving forward.
  • Gathering early feedback from the community on the design of features under development.

The news comes like a surprise as few years back the Moodle Users Association was initiated with similar objective. Now, in a separate announcement on MUA, Mike Churchward – posted about the change in how the MUA will work in future.

Moodle User’s Association (MUA) will change considerably

Moodle User’s Association will undergo major overhaul to get involved in Product Advisory Group (PAG). All the MUA members will get involved in the Product Advisory Group where they can participate in and influence Moodle’s future. This will make MUA focusing on its ideas rather than its financial contributions.

According to the announcement on MUA:

Inclusion of MUA members into the new PAG will begin immediately, allowing our members to participate in and influence Moodle’s future. Going forward, the MUA will continue to accept single year memberships until the new funding platform is in place. This is scheduled to be ready by January 2024. When this platform is in place, new memberships and renewals will no longer be accepted. The existing memberships will continue to use their fees to fund the remaining year of MUA projects, ending in January 2025. At the same time, the new funding platform will also fund the defined roadmap.

HRTech Firm Propel Raises $2.74M to Expand Its Community Platform

HRTech Firm Propel Raises $2.74M to Expand Its Community Platform
HRTech Firm Propel Raises $2.74M to Expand Its Community Platform

Propel, a Berlin-based HRTech startup with offices in Lisbon and Lagos that developed a managed services platform for communities and talent, has recently announced that it has raised $2.74 million (€2.5 million) in a seed funding round led by Amsterdam-based No Such Ventures, with participation from APX (Axel Springer & Porsche), Golden Egg Check, and Future of Learning Fund.

The startup works with over 100+ tech communities in 15 countries, serving roughly 400,000 members. Its highlights include SheCodeAfrica, one of Africa’s largest female-focused communities; Ingressive for Good, an open community that trains thousands of people in tech annually; Niyo Network, a UK-based organization that runs Web2 and Web3 bootcamps for underrepresented women; and others like Datafest, People In Product, Friends of Figma, and various Google Developer Groups. Communities in Propel’s ecosystem vary widely by size, location, gender distribution, tech stack, etc.

Co-founded by Sunkanmi Ola, Seun Owolabi, and Abel Agoi in 2020, Propel offers solutions that tech talent communities (developer groups, talent incubators, training institutions, etc.) can utilize to address last-mile issues, such as linking their members to employment opportunities, financial services (loans, asset financing), and other perks and rewards. The company provides this ‘value stack’ as a single platform that communities can use to serve their members better.

Sharing about the platform, Co-founder & CEO of Propel, Sunkanmi Ola, said:

Communities are the building blocks of any ecosystem, and tech communities, especially across high-growth markets like Africa and within underrepresented groups, have emerged in their thousands to cover the massive gaps in education, capacity building, and inclusion. They discover, up-skill, and mentor talent, organize hackathons, events, and peer-to-peer learning opportunities, and respond to global trends quicker than traditional institutions.

Propel connects to the diverse talent pools within tech communities, stretching across numerous skill sets, from software development to design, data science to no-code, and other digital transformation talents, in return for providing last-mile infrastructure. This pipeline is made available to multinational corporations under the “Community as a Service” paradigm.

Adding about the firm, Co-founder & Head of Strategy Seun Owolabi said:

At Propel, we’re championing more responsible and regenerative ways of hiring/building talent pipelines. Rather than deploying opportunistic practices like headhunting or poaching, we participate deeply in ecosystems, using proprietary technology to find the best talent within communities. And when we place people in jobs, our revenue is shared with the community they belong to, which is reinvested into programs and initiatives needed to get more people into tech. In summary, Propel is where ambitious companies come to find the talent that is just right for their needs and crowd-solve tech challenges while doing good at the same time.

Moodle Teachers – Use Multilanguage Content plugin to create your language courses easily

Moodle Teachers - Use Multilanguage Content plugin to create your language courses easily
Moodle Teachers - Use Multilanguage Content plugin to create your language courses easily

Moodle LMS is one of the most popular open source learning management system in the world. It is used by more than 365 million users around the world across 240+ countries. Moodle LMS allows you to create a customized learning platform for your requirements. In this post we will see how you can create multilanguage content in your Moodle LMS easily.

Moodle LMS always support creating content in different languages. The LMS itself is available in more than 50+ languages. You can use it to create your course content in different languages for your learners. The Multi-Language Content plugin allows you to create content in different languages easily.

In Core Moodle, you can also create the content in different languages but you need to learn a bit. To use this feature first create your content in multiple languages (in the same resource). Then enclose each language block (aka multilang block) in the following tags:

      <span lang="XX" class="multilang">your_content_here</span>
      <span lang="YY" class="multilang">your_content_in_other_language_here</span>

But with this plugin, you will get a tool in the editor toolbar which can be used to add the content. The plugin is available from the Moodle Plugins repository here. It is compatible with TinyMCE6 editor which is the default editor in Moodle 4.1 onwards.

After the installation there is a new Button (with a globe icon) and a menu entry in the Format section where you can select a language. Clicking on a language entry adds a language opening and closing tag to your text at the current cursor position. If there is a selection then the language tags are places around the selection. In case you use the highlighting option and see the yellow language tags, you may click one of these tags then select a new language from the menu and that will change the language of the existing tag.

What are the other ways to create course content in different languages in Moodle? Please share with us in the comments section below.
