Amsterdam-Based Employee Relocation Platform Settly Raises $6.5M in Seed Funding

Settly, an Amsterdam-based HRTech startup for employee relocation has recently announced that it has raised $6.5 million (€6 million) in a seed funding co-led by French evergreen impact fund “2050” and Mediahuis Ventures, the Belgian venture capital fund of international publisher Mediahuis. With the funds, the startup intends to expand its product offering, cement its position in key markets, and further grow its operations across global markets.

Co-founded by Marieke van Iperen and Kimo Paula, Settly supports international employees during their transition to a new country and unburdens the employer. The startup aims to create a world where everyone can feel at home and provides end-to-end support and an optimal experience for employees and their partners. It operates in the Netherlands, Germany, the UK, Spain, Portugal, the Czech Republic, and Australia. The company employs 55 people from 33 nationalities, mostly women at all organisational levels, and LGTBQIA+ is well represented.

Speaking about the company, Co-founder & CEO of Settly, Marieke van Iperen, said:

The number of people living and working outside their birth country is expected to grow by 70 million in the next years. Our mission is to transform the future of work, where it no longer matters where you come from but where you feel at home. Settly wants to change how companies look at international talent, recruiting, culture and community. We do this by not only offering support in immigration, tax and soft landing but also by focusing on how people feel in their new country through a multi-local approach.

Settly was named one of the ‘top 5 global bootstrapped startups to watch’ by Dealroom last year, almost quadrupled in revenue and team size in 2022, and is on track to achieve impressive growth numbers in 2023. The firm has a local set-up in each country to support its clients. In doing so, it combines a hyperpersonal and multi-local approach to improve the employee experience. The company claims it grew 350 per cent last year while maintaining a client satisfaction score of 9.2/10. Marie Ekeland, Founder of 2050, commented:

It is our mission to change how the VC model works and help grow businesses that have a meaningful impact on people, society and the planet. Settly’s 3% churn rate and a Client Satisfaction score of 9.2 shows a strong need for a personalized approach in a market worth $58 billion among larger multinationals alone. The startup’s core values align seamlessly with our investment policy.

London-Based Generative AI Startup Kinnu Raises $6.5M in New Funding Round

Kinnu, a London-based generative AI EdTech company, has raised $6.5 million in a fresh funding round led by LocalGlobe (a member of the Phoenix Group) and Cavalry Ventures. The startup is currently focusing on adult enthusiast learners. Its app, which has over 100,000 downloads, uses artificial intelligence to generate tailored learning content for science, history and psychology.

Co-founded by Christopher Kahler, Abraham Muller, and Hanna Celina in 2021, Kinnu works with the mission to give everyone the power to learn anything they want to. The platform uses generative AI in a “three-pronged content creation approach” to create content. They are human experts, large language models and community feedback. Human experts create the course outline or pathway. This is fed into the startup’s “Learning Engine”, which uses large language models like those powering ChatGPT to pick out the main ideas of a subject and turn out relevant revision questions in different formats, such as multiple choice. It can also repackage that information to prevent learners from spotting patterns.

Speaking about the company, Co-founder & CEO of Kinnu, Christopher Kahler, said:

There’s a huge opportunity for AI-powered learning that focuses on accelerating the pace of human learning itself. 10 years ago, online learning experienced a boom because it democratised access to content. The next frontier is democratising access to the mechanism of how we learn, from quantum mechanics and Chaucer to idioms and soft skills adapted to the learner’s own pace and ability. It’s this that excites us.

Adding further about the platform, Co-founder of Kinnu, Hanna Celina, said:

Our backgrounds are perfectly complementary. I worked at Google, Futurelearn and Deliveroo and studied at Harvard, so we all bring a unique perspective on the future of learning and how to build it.

Find out the time spent by students in Moodle course by Course Dedication plugin

Find out the time spent by students in Moodle course by Course Dedication plugin
Find out the time spent by students in Moodle course by Course Dedication plugin

With a vast range of features and plugins, Moodle LMS offers educators and learners the tools they need to create engaging and interactive online courses. However, many educators look to find a solution to check how much time the learners have spent in their course.

By checking the time spent in the course, you can link it to further actions like issuing a certificate with hours spent etc. So, in this post we will see the Course Dedication plugin which can help you track the time spent by users in your Moodle course.

The Course Dedication Moodle plugin allows to calculate estimated dedication time of participants within a course. Kindly note that this plugin is not tracking any user directly to trigger any privacy related problems. Instead the Time is estimated based in the concepts of Session and Session duration applied to Moodle’s log entries:

  • Click: every time that a user access to a page in Moodle a log entry is stored.
  • Session: set of two or more consecutive clicks in which the elapsed time between every pair of consecutive clicks does not overcome an established maximum time.
  • Session duration: elapsed time between the first and the last click of the session.

You can download the Course Dedication Moodle plugin from the official plugins repository here.

The block is mainly intended to be used by the teachers but you can also make it visible to the students. For teachers the Course Dedication block provides:

  • Dedication time of the course: calculates total dedication time, mean dedication time and connections per day for each student, which you can filter by course group if required.
  • Dedication of a student: detailed sessions for a student with start date & time, duration and ip.
  • Report builder source: The plugin includes a custom report builder source to allow for site-level reporting to be generated.

What are the other ways you are using as a Moodle teacher to keep track of your student’s progress. Please share with us in the comments section below.

Generative AI English Learning App Loora Raises $9.25M in Seed Round

Generative AI English Learning App Loora Raises $9.25M in Seed Round
Generative AI English Learning App Loora Raises $9.25M in Seed Round

Loora, the generative AI English language learning platform, has announced that it has raised a $9.25 million seed round led by lead investor Emerge, with participation from Two Lanterns Venture Partners and Kaedan Capital. With the funds, the startup plans to further research and develop its generative AI capabilities, improve its product, expand its team of AI researchers and engineers, and ramp up marketing efforts.

Co-founded by Roy Mor and Yonti Levin in late 2020, Loora harnesses the power of generative AI purpose-built to make English fluency attainable and accessible. The platform believes everyone deserves the opportunity to speak English fluently and that learning English shouldn’t be a barrier that holds anyone back from fulfilling their dreams and aspirations. To bridge this gap, the company has developed the most advanced AI English tutor building a bespoke system of cutting-edge large language models, specifically trained and optimized to provide the best and most personalized experience for each learner.

Speaking on the fundraising, Co-founder & CEO of Loora, Roy Mor, said:

English is the lingua franca of today’s globalized world, and professional success can be an uphill battle without mastery of the language. Yet, most people still need access to affordable and impactful English learning solutions. While generative AI has immense potential to help people practice their language skills, not all AI is created equal. Our conversational AI was created and optimized specifically to enable people to access more opportunities by equipping them with the English skills they need to thrive. We’re thrilled to have the support of investors who recognize our technology’s importance and far-reaching impact, and we look forward to continuing to deliver the future of English language learning.

With Loora by their side, it enables people to tap into their true potential. The firm equips them with the tools to master English, paving the way for better career opportunities, business, education, or personal lives.

Headquartered in Tel Aviv, Loora, available via a subscription model, already has thousands of paid subscribers spanning the US, Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Its AI is built, trained, and optimized specifically for those seeking a personalized English learning experience. It provides an experience that matches naturally conversing with a native English speaker on-demand with real-time feedback.

Liad Rubin, General Partner of Emerge, added:

We have been partnering with trailblazing AI companies since 2016, so Loora was a natural fit in our portfolio. In 2020, co-founders Roy Mor and Yonti Levin already recognized the potential of generative AI for language learning. They set out on a mission to harness it for the benefit of society far before the introduction of ChatGPT. General-purpose generative AI models are effective in the execution of generic tasks, but there is a massive advantage in building and training an AI specifically for a domain. This is why Loora envisioned and built their AI tutor to teach English, creating an unparalleled, next-gen solution for virtual English education. We’re excited to be part of this journey.
