The initiative aims to revolutionize education and literacy in India by creating a comprehensive learning ecosystem that bridges gaps in basic literacy and critical life skills.

On the sidelines, the Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan launched the logo, slogan ‘Jan Jan Sakshar’ and the mobile application of ULLAS: Nav Bharat Saksharta Karyakram at the Bharat Mandapam. Speaking at the event, Pradhan said:

ULLAS mobile application marks a significant milestone in harnessing the potential of technology to facilitate widespread access to basic literacy. The platform will focus on promoting functional literacy, vocational skills and many essential life skills like financial literacy, digital literacy and empowerment of citizens to involve in the nation-building of the country.

The ULLAS initiative aims to provide a comprehensive learning ecosystem that caters to the needs of every individual. The platform is primarily designed for citizens aged 15 and above who have yet to take the opportunity to attend formal schooling. By reaching out to this demographic, the programme aims to extend education and literacy to marginalized sections of society.

The Union Education Minister also highlighted that the scheme would motivate volunteers to take part in the scheme as ‘DUTY’ or ‘Kartavya Bodh’ towards nation building and will incentivize the student volunteers through credits in schools and university and appreciation through other means like certificates, appreciation letters, felicitation, etc.

He added:

This user-friendly and interactive app is available both on Android and IOS and will serve as a digital gateway for learners to engage in diverse learning resources through the DIKSHA portal of NCERT. The ULLAS app can be used to register learners and volunteers either through self-registration or by surveyors. It also fosters a culture of continuous learning and knowledge-sharing in communities across India.

Saudi Arabian EdTech YaSchools Raises $600K in Seed Round Funding

YaSchools, a Saudi Arabian startup specializing in educational management solutions that connect schools, teachers, and students, has recently raised $600,000 (2.203 million dirhams) in a seed round led by a group of angel investors. With this investment round, the company plans to expand into the Middle East, North Africa and Turkey (MENAT) region, starting with Jordan.

The firm claims to to have registered 1,750 schools and served 2,500 teachers and more than 92,000 parents. Its ever-expanding clientele puts it on the road to becoming one of the fastest-growing startups in the educational sector. Since the launch of its micro-lending services in early 2023, YaSchools has received financing requests worth more than $40 million. It is worth noting that the MENAT target market size of the company is around 56 million students at 270,000 schools generating $110 billion.

Founded in 2021 by Egyptian entrepreneurs Mohamed Zohair, Ahmed Mahdy, and Yasser Nasr-Aldin, YaSchools offer the region’s first-of-its-kind platform to manage the educational ecosystem, acting as the facilitator between all stakeholders—such as schools, teachers, and students—involved in the educational process. The platform utilizes big data, artificial intelligence, and financial technologies that can assist in processing tasks in an autonomous and fast-paced manner. The startup aims to improve the education experience through a stack of innovative services, on top of which is the facilitation of microlending solutions that provide parents with payment plans to cover all educational expenses.

Speaking on the fundraising, Co-founder & CEO of YaSchools, Mohamed Zohair, said:

The seed round closure confirms the investors’ confidence in the platform and the influential role it plays in bridging the gap within the education system. As a regulator of the education ecosystem, YaSchools became the parent’s compass along the educational journey and the schools’ “business partner” by automating all the administrative work such as admission, registration, and tuition fee collection. Our goal is to make the education journey a hassle-free experience and lessen the financial burden on the parents; therefore, we plan to add more services and products to our system.

Adding about the investment, Co-founder & Chief Strategy Officer & Head of Investment, YaSchools, Yasser Nasr-Aldin, said:

The fresh funding will be used to shore up the company’s existing and future expansion plans. Currently, the company is gearing up to launch in Jordan. The decision is based on an actionable plan that has been finalized and will be activated within a few weeks. The company’s expansion plan includes the Middle East, North Africa, and Turkey (MENAT) region. We work to expedite that by providing a package of localized services that meet the needs of parents in each country who may need help finding the best educational solutions for their children.

Join ALT's Annual Conference 2023 from 5-7 September 2023
Join ALT's Annual Conference 2023 from 5-7 September 2023

The ALT Annual Conference is back and it’s bigger and better than ever! This year ALT’s Annual Conference will take place from 5-7 September 2023 at the University of Warwick. The edtech conference will celebrate the 30th anniversary and the phenomenal changes in the sector over this time.

The ALT Annual Conference is the UK’s foremost conference for Learning Technologists and one of the largest conferences of its kind, attracting around 500 participants each year. This year, we are celebrating three decades since ALT was established in 1993 with our 30th annual conference.

This year’s conference theme, “Looking through the digital lens: 30 years of Leading People, Digital and Culture”.  The conference will critically examine the organisations and practices we work in through a digital lens, fostering a community of future leaders and innovators in the digital space, who come together to exchange ideas, collaborate, and drive change.

This year’s conference themes:

  • Leading People in a time of complexity: How have individuals and teams driven change to solve complex and difficult problems?  How have individuals and teams been rewarded and recognised in their institutions for being experts and leaders in digital learning?
  • Diversity and Inclusion: How are the most precarious and disadvantaged people being supported and empowered through technology? What future exclusions must we fight?
  • Sustainability and Social Justice: How green is your educational technology? How will we model green and sustainable practices in the field of educational technology and what does it mean for institutions? How do you make decisions about tech that proactively care for the most vulnerable people among us?  How should we model practices that account more for the health and well-being of people than that of businesses trying to sell technology to the education sector?
  • Emerging technologies and behaviours: How are emerging technologies, or new uses for existing technologies changing behaviours and practices? What do emerging technologies mean for learning, teaching and assessment? How do we prepare students and staff to critically face the hype cycles around tools such as Machine Learning, and teach them to sift through what companies are claiming, to find the truth?
  • Wildcard submissions: submissions that address the wider conference theme, covering practice, research or policy in Learning Technology.

Austria-Based GoStudent Raises $95M to Expand Hybrid Learning Solution in DACH Region

Austria-Based GoStudent Raises $95M to Expand Hybrid Learning Solution in DACH Region
Austria-Based GoStudent Raises $95M to Expand Hybrid Learning Solution in DACH Region

Austrian EdTech unicorn and leading global tutoring provider, GoStudent has raised $95 million in funding from investors, including Deutsche Bank, Left Lane Capital, DN Capital, Tencent, Prosus, DST, Coatue, and Softbank Vision Fund 2. This strategic fundraising, which includes a mix of equity and debt capital, brings its total raised to $686.3 million.

With this investment round, GoStudent also aims to bring enhanced online and offline educational support to the DACH region. One key focus will be expanding its newly launched virtual reality language learning platform, GoVR. It intends to create immersive and engaging student learning experiences by leveraging virtual reality technology.

The Vienna-based company, valued at approximately €3 billion, plans to utilize the funds to expand its hybrid learning solutions to the DACH region and develop its virtual reality language learning platform.

Co-founded in 2016 by Felix Oswald and Gregor Müller, GoStudent provides paid, one-to-one, video-based tuition in more than 30 subjects to primary, secondary and college-aged students using a membership model. Its mission is to ensure long-term learning success – for a self-determined future for the students. The firm employs more than 1,500 people and supports over 5 million families monthly. It currently has around 23,000 tutors on its platform and develops an “AI lesson plan generator” trained on the local curriculum. The idea aims to save each tutor an average of 15 minutes per lesson.

Speaking on the fundraising, Co-founder & CEO of GoStudent, Felix Ohswald, said:

More immediately, though, families will have total flexibility via our hybrid model. If the preference is for offline tutoring, but the family is travelling for summer, 1:1 online lessons can be booked to ensure momentum is recovered. Or, if a child loves to learn English with other children but needs 1:1 support in mathematics, we can make this happen. For us, hybrid is about ensuring long-term learning success that suits the needs of the individual. This raise provides we seize this opportunity and signals confidence that we are driving the future of education.

CEO & Managing Partner of Left Lane Capital, Harley Miller, added:

As one of GoStudent’s earliest investors, we backed the company’s vision and are thrilled to see the team execute against it. The team has honed its core online tutoring offering, built a sustainable model, and grown across Europe. As GoStudent doubles down on its existing VR capabilities, introduces innovative AI tools, and drives synergies with Studienkreis, we see even further potential to complete its vision of hybrid offline and online tutoring and introduce other technology-enabled learning modalities.
