Moodle Administrators – Use Smart Cohort plugin to automatically add users to cohorts

Moodle Administrators - Use Smart Cohort plugin to automatically add users to cohorts
Moodle Administrators - Use Smart Cohort plugin to automatically add users to cohorts

Moodle Cohorts offer administrators an easy way to organize & group the learners, so that these users can be easily enrolled in a course. The cohorts can be created by the Admin at Site level or at category level. The purpose of cohorts is to enable all members of the cohort to be easily enrolled in a course.

However, adding users into the cohorts can be a tedious task for the administrators especially when there are new users added in the Moodle. The Smart Cohort Moodle plugin can be of great help in such cases. It allows the users to be automatically added to cohorts based on the filters.

The Smart Cohort Moodle plugin allows you to set custom rules to add the users into cohorts. The rules can be based on any profile field like Name, email, city, country, institution, department, suspended, etc. It will automatically add the users based on the set filters whenever the cron runs for your Moodle.

This can make the life of Moodle administrators easier and help them save a lot of time by adding users automatically to the cohorts instead of manual addition.

Here is a screencast to show how Smart Cohort plugin works in Moodle:

You can download the Smart Cohort Moodle plugin from the official plugins repository here. After installing the plugin, you will get a new link under Site Admin > users > Smart Filters. The interface is pretty easy afterwards as you can click the Create Rule button to add a new rule.

Once a rule is created it will show you the conditions for the rule as well the option to view the members within the cohort. During my testing, the plugin works like a charm and added the students pretty easily. All you need is to have some cohorts ready on your Moodle before creating the rules.

Let us know what do you think about the Smart Cohorts Moodle plugin? Please share your views in the comments section below.

We also look forward to welcoming to the team Oli and Andrea, whose expertise will be instrumental as we continue to enhance and expand our service beyond the UK.

Headquartered in Leeds, Mable Therapy claims to have delivered over 22,000 hours of Therapy to over 3,000 children in the last year alone. The firm has been working with children for six years and has helped thousands of children with their mental health and communication skills.

Moodle Teachers – Create nested Course section using the Flexible Sections Course format

Create nested Course section using the Flexible Sections Course format
Create nested Course section using the Flexible Sections Course format

Moodle LMS allows you to customize the learning experience for your learners by using different types of plugins. Moodle supports a wide variety of plugins which includes more than 2050 plugins in the official directory. In this post we will discuss about the Flexible Sections Course Format plugin and how you can use it in Moodle.

The Flexible Sections Course Format plugin allows you to create nested course sections which provides educators with more control and customization over the organization of their courses. Traditional Moodle courses are often structured linearly, with topics or weeks following a predetermined order. However, the Flexible Sections plugin breaks free from this rigidity by offering a dynamic way to arrange course content.

This course format looks very similar to Topics format except:

  • sections can be added inside other sections
  • each section (regardless of its nesting level) can be shown either on the same page as parent or on a separate page. Teacher can change it in edit mode.
  • If section is displayed on a separate page, it’s name is displayed as a link and on this  page the link “Back to … ” is displayed
  • If teacher hides a section all nested sections and activities become hidden as well.

You can download the latest version of the Flexible Sections course format plugin from the official plugins repository here.

What are the other course format plugins you are using on your Moodle site? Please share with us in the comments section below.
