Moodle Teachers – Allow students to enroll after completing course in another category

Moodle Teachers - Allow students to enroll after completing course in another category

Moodle, the open-source Learning Management System (LMS), is renowned for its flexibility and extensibility. One of the key factors contributing to its adaptability is the extensive range of plugins available. In this post, we will discuss about Moodle plugin which allows you to let students enroll themselves in a course when they complete a course in another category.

The Moodle plugin – ‘Enrol by Category’ allows the teachers to setup the enrollment of a course in such a way that students needs to complete a course in another category. This can be used in scenarios where you have few courses like Preliminary level in Category 1 and Intermediate level in Category 2. You can setup the enrollment of Category 2 courses with this plugin such that students can access them only when they complete a course in Category 1.

The plugin also provides option to setup the waiting list which allows to setup a maximum participants in the course. When the maximum amount of participants is reached, additional participants can join the waiting list. Participants on the waiting list are informed about open spots on daily. The teacher can manually enroll participants from the waiting list into the course bypassing the maximum participants limit.

It also allows the students who are enrolled using this plugin to join specified group. This is useful if the course has multiple enrollment methods and also uses groups to show different content to different users.

The plugin also allows you to set a time limit to limit the course to participants which for example have finished a course in the specified category at most 6 month earlier. The time limit can be configured to count from when the course starts or when the course was created.

You can download the Enrol by Category Moodle plugin from the official plugins repository here.

Moodle Teachers – Restrict your course activities until students complete another course

Moodle Teachers - Restrict your course activities until students complete another course
Moodle Teachers - Restrict your course activities until students complete another course

Moodle is the world’s most popular open source learning management system with more than 395 million users around the world. The vast collection of readily available plugins as well as the flexibility to create a new plugin allows the platform to cater the learning requirements for all industries. In this post, we will discuss about the Moodle plugin – ‘Restriction by other course completion’ and how does it work.

The Restriction by other course completion Moodle plugin provides a simple but yet very effective restriction condition. It allows the teachers to restrict the course section or course activities until a student has completed any other course. You need to setup the course completion settings in your course before you can use this plugin.

For example you have two courses on your Moodle site – Course X & Course Y. You want your students to complete Course X before they can access any specific activity in Course Y. You can also restrict whole section in Course Y.

After installing the plugin, you need to go to course X and setup the course completion. Watch this screencast to understand how to setup course completion criteria:

Once you have setup the Course completion for Course X, then you can edit any activity/section in Course Y. Under the Restrict Access section, you will see a new restriction named “Other Course Completion”. You will see all your courses where course completion is setup under the drop down to add as the restriction condition. Then just click Save Changes and you are good to go.

You can download the Restriction by other course completion plugin from the official Moodle plugins repository here.

Moodle HQ – Martin Dougiamas transitioned from CEO to Head of Research

Moodle HQ - Martin Dougiamas transitioned from CEO to Head of Research
Moodle HQ - Martin Dougiamas transitioned from CEO to Head of Research

Moodle LMS founder Martin Dougiamas has switched to Head of Research at Moodle HQ after serving as the CEO for last 24 years. In a recent announcement, Martin shared the news on Moodle forums after successful completion of MoodleMoot Global 2023.

Martin started the Moodle LMS as an experiment at Curtin University which later on turned into one of the world’s most popular open source LMS with more than 395 million users around the world.

In his post, Martin mentioned :

Throughout the last two decades, I’ve stayed passionate about research, innovation and experimentation, even while I had to learn how to run and manage our Moodle HQ company at the centre of the project to provide sustainability and management of the project. I feel Moodle HQ is mature enough now to allow me to focus my attention more fully in this area, concentrating on how the world of online learning technology can evolve. Freely available generative AI, robots and new devices are bringing a technology and education revolution that will disrupt these fields as much as the Internet itself did, if not more.

With this new announcement, Martin will move to a new role as Head of Research at Moodle along with his team to focus on research and investigation of new open source education technologies helping to support the Moodle roadmap in the long term.

Now after this transition, Moodle HQ is looking for a new CEO to fill the position vacated by Martin by early 2024. Martin further added:

Nothing will change for the Moodle community. Everyone at Moodle HQ remains committed to Moodle LMS as an open source platform and our certification as a B Corp recognises our ongoing dedication to using business as a force for good. It’s incredibly important to me and the Board that we take the time to find the right person for the job, so it’s likely to be some time before we announce an appointment.
