Moodle Quiz is one of the most flexible and most customizable quiz engine. It allows you to customize the Online Quiz for your learners based on your requirements with plethora of customization possibilities. In this post, we will see how you can set programming questions in Moodle quiz.

The CodeRunner Question type plugin allows you to add programming questions in your Moodle Quiz. The plugins allows you to create questions in which the student answer is code in some programming language, which is graded by running it.

CodeRunner has been in use at the University of Canterbury for over seven years, running millions of student quiz question submissions in Python, C , JavaScript, PHP, Octave and Matlab. CodeRunner currently supports Python2 (considered obsolescent), Python3, C, C++, Java, PHP, JavaScript (NodeJS), Octave and Matlab. The architecture allows easy extension to other languages.

You can download the CodeRunner Moodle plugin from the official plugins repository here. To install & run it properly, you need to have a separate Jobe installation (read here for more detailed instructions).

The plugin can help you create exams in different programming languages and evaluate the student’s answer easily. CodeRunner support a wide variety of question types and can easily be extended to support others. A CodeRunner question type is defined by a question prototype, which specifies run time parameters like the execution language and sandbox and also the template that define how a test program is built from the question’s test-cases plus the student’s submission.

IOMAD 4.2 released - Multi-tenancy Moodle based solution updated for Moodle 4.2

IOMAD – the Moodle based Multi-tenancy solution has been updated to new version based on Moodle 4.2. The new IOMAD 4.2 introduces some nice new multi-tenant features as well as general cleanup and improved support for PHP 8.0.

IOMAD is a multi-tenancy solution for the business, corporate and workplace markets. It allows you to run a single Moodle installation and cater different companies with completely separate platform such that users from one Company won’t see users from another.

New Features in IOMAD 4.2

The new version adds the following new features:

  • Completion overview report: This new report provides a RAG chart for the current state of users and courses, allowing managers to quickly check if their staff are all up to date with all required training and see where training has either expired or is due to.
  • Parent company roll-up of reports: Course completion reports and log-in reports will now show an overview for the company managers of parent companies across their own and all child companies. Child companies appear on the department picker, and there is an option in the filters to switch between these views.
  • Added per tenant SMTP settings: This allows the site administrator to define different outgoing email configuration settings for different tenants while retaining the default site settings for everyone else.
  • Training event attendance condition: A new condition has been added so that activities and resources within a course can be made available to users who have successfully signed up for a training event.
  • IOMAD SAML2 plugin: We have converted the SAML2 authentication plugin so that it will work with different configurations for different tenants. This provides the same configuration as already exists for the IOMAD OIDC authentication plugin for the SAML2 authentication methods.

There are other various improvements and fixes. Complete details are mentioned in the release notes here. For more details about IOMAD, please check out the official website here.

IOMAD is an open source option for the users who are looking to implement a single Moodle installation to cater for various companies. Other options include Moodle Workplace which is an official solution from Moodle HQ.

Moodle Teachers - Provide a glimpse of your course activities using Restriction by Course Role plugin

Moodle – world’s most popular open-source learning management system (LMS), is renowned for its flexibility and extensibility. One of the key factors contributing to its popularity is the vast ecosystem of plugins that allow educators to customize and extend their eLearning environments. In this post we will have a look at Restriction by course role Moodle plugin and how you can use it.

The Restriction by course role Moodle plugin can restrict the course activities or complete sections to the users who belongs to a specific role. This can be used to restrict the course sections to authenticated users and provide a glimpse of course activities to Guest users. So, when a visitor comes to your course page they will see sample course activities and course details to decide if they want to enroll in your course.

By using this plugin Restriction by course role Moodle plugin you can achieve a course listing similar to popular online learning platforms like Udemy. The learners can see part of your courses before actually paying for it. If they liked them then they can pay for the course and get access to all other course content.

You can download the Restriction by course role Moodle plugin from the official plugins repository here. Once installed, you will see a new restriction under Restrict Access section on each activity/section settings page. You can set the restriction settings for restricted activities (not available to guest users) as the user Role Must Not be Guest as you can see below. It will show the restriction that this section is not available unless you are not a Guest.

Denmark's Language Training Platform Swap Language Raises $2.15M in Seed Round

Denmark’s enterprise language training provider – Swap Language has recently raised $2.15 million (€2 million) in a seed round co-led by Amsterdam-based Mediahuis Ventures and Helsinki-based Sparkmind. With the financing, the company intends to grow into the German market, where first pilots are already underway, add more languages, and begin constructing its vision of a full-fledged AI teacher capable of replacing humans in teaching speaking and writing abilities.

Swap Language’s freshly announced second-generation platform, built on a multi-tenant architecture, is the market’s first freemium enterprise language teaching platform. It enables companies to enrol overseas employees in their language learning community, providing them direct access to hundreds of free on-demand language sessions and quizzes and the opportunity to practice with local colleagues.

Co-founded by Nichlas Walsted, and Allan Hermansen, Swap Language aims to tackle the problem by helping international employees integrate and feel an increased sense of belonging within their organization and in their new home. The platform uses a combination of engaging video content, AI-generated exercises, and real-life online speaking lessons to help international employees reach fluency in and outside the workplace.

Speaking about the company, Co-founder & CEO of Swap Language, Nichlas Walsted, said:

Highly skilled international employees are ambitious and work for the highest paced, demanding enterprises. They need flexible, engaging solutions and use the newest technology to help them develop language skills that they can apply both in their jobs and while settling in their new host country. While the B2C market has some amazing players like Duolingo, the B2B language training market is old and dominated by traditional language schools.

Vesa Laakso, Founding Partner of Sparkmind.vc, commented:

We’re excited about truly transformative educational technologies. Swap Language caught our attention because of its mission-driven founding team and solutions crafted with a deep understanding of global workforce challenges. Their thought-out content and innovative approach to merging the virtual and real worlds of language acquisition sets a new standard for enterprise language training. We believe that their unique vision for fostering genuine human connections through Language will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of international workplaces. It’s an investment in a company and a brighter, interconnected global community.

The startup believes there is a better and more enjoyable way to achieve. It focuses on making Language learning more flexible, entertaining, and context-based so international employees can learn Danish.

Moodle is one of the most popular open source learning management system in the world with more than 390 million users around the world. In the online learning scenarios it is often desired by the teachers to have some direct learning interactions with the students. In this post we will see how you can use the Organizer Moodle plugin to add the events in your Moodle course.

The organizer Moodle plugin allows the teachers to setup direct interaction meetings with students or a group of students. The students can then subscribe to the events and discuss with the teachers according to their scheduled event.

This plugin can help save a lot of time for the Moodle teachers who would like to schedule interactions with their students. With the setting of availability slots in advance by the teacher, and the choice of slot by the learner based on these slots, making appointments is much less time-consuming and more fluid. It also offers teachers better training management as well as global visibility, from a single tool.

You can download the Organizer Moodle plugin from the official plugins repository here. It is developed by Academic Moodle Cooperation. As a teacher you can see all available and past events and see the enrollment status of the students. You can also send reminders to students who have not enrolled yet. You can define the Location as well as Location link (Zoom meeting URL or Google Meet or Microsoft Teams URL).

Overall, this plugin can offer a handy way to let teachers manage their time better and schedule appointments with students as per their convenience.
