Moodle Educators - Prevent Students from Cheating during Quiz by Blocking concurrent sessions

Moodle is world’s most popular open source learning management system (LMS) in the world with more than 400 million users around the world. It has been used by many big universities around the world such as Open University. In this post we will discuss how you can stop students from cheating during a Moodle Quiz.

While Moodle LMS offers a pretty robust & powerful quiz which allows you to customize according to your requirements. By using Safe Exam browser with Moodle Quiz, you can limit students capabilities to cheat while attempting the quiz. However, there may be cases when you can’t have Safe Exam Browser on students device to prevent them from cheating.

The quiz access rule plugin – Block Concurrent Sessions Moodle plugin comes in handy. It allows the students to continue quiz attempt only in the same browser session. Any attempts to open same quiz attempt using another computer, device or browser will be blocked.

This is useful to prevent a situation in which someone helps a student to solve a quiz by accessing the quiz with the student’s username/password from another computer. In case that a student accidentally closes the browser or the computer breaks during a quiz, teacher can use the attempt review page to unlock this attempt and allow the student to continue the quiz attempt on another device.

Any attempts to continue a quiz from another device are logged, so teacher can see the log to determine if someone tried to cheat.

You can download the Block concurrent connections quiz access rule Moodle plugin from the official Plugins repository here.

Online Coding Platform for Kids iSchool Raises $4.5M to Accelerate International Expansion

iSchool, an Egypt-based educational technology platform, has raised $4.5 million in a funding round led by VentureWave Capital, an Irish VC, with participation from OneStop Capital UK, Website Investment Network, and Oraseya Capital, the Venture Capital arm of the Dubai Integrated Economic Zones Authority. With this new financing, the company will accelerate its expansion into six additional MENA countries, enable technology scalability for the ‘Online Coding Platform,’ and prepare for the further development of its gamified online classroom app service throughout Sub-Saharan Africa.

Founded in 2018 by Mohamed Algawish, Mustafa AbdelMon’em, Ebrahim Youssef and Mohamed Nabil, iSchool offers live gamified classes led by top coding instructors, catering to students aged 6 to 18. The curriculum spans AI, VR, app, game, and web development, fostering foundational concepts from early childhood. This unique approach and international accreditation have propelled the startup’s rapid growth.

Speaking about the company’s growth and mission, Co-founder & CEO of iSchool, Muhammad Gawish, said:

We started by teaching tech for K12 students, and today we are giving the world access to thousands of top-notch coding instructors from their comfort at home with a click of a button. Our mission is to empower today’s generations to become tomorrow’s technology leaders, beginning in the Middle East and Africa and spreading to the rest of the world. Using dynamic technology and a deep understanding of the end-to-end live class process, we are growing a simple idea into a product that can improve the lives of millions of people.

iSchool’s journey began in 2018 as a solution for the 100 million students in the MENA region who need access to technology education curricula or programmes. After experiencing similar obstacles and challenges in their tech education journey, the iSchool founders set out to enhance students’ access to critical staples, and through operational excellence, the company has achieved more than 72% client retention month over month.

The organization claims to have over 26,000 live learners, over 1,000,000 training hours delivered, and over 10,000,000 lines of code written by its students while working with 35 schools, providing technical training and CS labs, all of which led to managing national-level initiatives in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

Reflecting on iSchool’s growth and potential, Kieran McLoughlin, VentureWave Capital’s Managing Partner, stated:

VentureWave Capital is thrilled to lead this funding round for iSchool and to back such an innovative company that is making a significant impact on education in the Middle East and Africa. This investment aligns perfectly with our mission to achieve social progress by supporting transformative entrepreneurs. We are delighted to participate in iSchool’s ambitious plans to bring its unique educational model to new markets and empower the next generation of technology leaders.

Moodle Teachers - Make Learning Programs easily with the Subcourse Plugin

Moodle is worlds most popular learning management system with more than 400 million users around the world. The ease of use, simplicity and extensibility options make it the preferred LMS across the globe. In this post we will see how you can use the Subcourse Moodle plugin to create Learning Programs easily.

The Subcourse Moodle plugin let’s you include the final grade of a course as an activity for another course in Moodle. The activity pulls the final grades from the linked courses and adds them to your main course’s grade. Doing this essentially creates a meta course that acts like a learning program.

Once they got a certain grade in one course you can unlock other course for them automatically. In addition you will get all grades aggregated in a single place.

You can download the Subcourse Moodle plugin from the official Plugins repository here. According to the plugin description:

  • Grades are fetched automatically or can be fetched manually any time.
  • The grade type and other grade item settings are copied from the original grade total item and can not be changed.
  • Subcourse can be automatically marked as a completed when the referenced course is completed.
  • If the final grade in the referenced course is hidden, the associated subcourse activity grade is hidden, too.
