Moodle LMS is world’s most popular open source learning management system with around 400 million users across the globe. The popularity behind the Moodle LMS is because of the flexibility and adaptation to all types of online learning requirements. In this post, we will discuss what is YouTube repository and how you can enable the YouTube repository in Moodle.

YouTube is world’s second most powerful search engine with a lot of videos on teaching, education, edtech, learning and tutorials. In the case of modern classrooms, it is apparent to use various YouTube videos in your online learning curriculum.

Moodle provides an inbuilt way to search and use YouTube videos without leaving the LMS – known as YouTube Repository. However, on all new Moodle installations, it comes as disabled by default.

You can enable & activate the YouTube Repository to let the teachers on your Moodle site easily search for videos on different topics and use it in their course. All you need to do as a Moodle Administrator is to get a YouTube Data API and enter the API key in Moodle.

You can enable the YouTube Repository as a Site Administrator by following these steps:

  • Go to Administration > Plugins > Repositories > Manage Repositories
  • Select from the drop down next to YouTube “Enabled and visible”.
  • Click on “Settings”
  • Enter the name for the repository (if required)
  • Create a YouTube Data API from – https://console.developers.google.com/
  • Click the plus sign ‘Enable API’ at the top of the page.
  • Click ‘YouTube data API’
  • Click the Enable link (if not already enabled)
  • You will be given an API code which you can copy
  • Paste this into the API key box in your Moodle site (Repositories>Youtube) and save.

Now whenever any teacher looking to use YouTube videos, they can simply go to any area with a text editor and click the Multimedia icon to search any video on YouTube. The teacher will see the search box like this:
