    Job Summary

    AIA’s members consistently rank education as a critical value of membership. AIAU is AIA’s flagship online learning platform. In 2021, more than 17,000 learners earned credits exceeding 43,000 hours through 300+ live online and on-demand courses delivered through AIAU.

    The Manager, Instructional Design, is a professional position reporting to the Director, Member Learning, and is responsible for designing, developing, and programming member learning programs for AIA’s online member learning platform—AIAU—and other events. This position is ideas-driven and passionate about making learning an invigorating and empowering experience by working cross-functionally with other departments, member committees, AIA components, and subject matter experts. The manager will design and develop learning programs that reflect best practices in adult learning and meet AIA’s standards for continuing education programs with the goal to facilitate learners in acquiring knowledge, skills, and competencies in an effective and appealing manner. This position works closely with the Director, Member Learning, internal and external stakeholders, subject matter experts, and other AIAU staff; provides work progress reports; maintains project records; and communicates with stakeholders to promote collaboration and accountability.

    Job Duties

    • Conducts needs analysis by working with subject matter experts and stakeholders to determine what is to be learned and recommend, design, and develop a learning solution.
    • Design and develop engaging and interactive content and engaging activities using instructional design principles, multimedia production tools, and eLearning software (e.g., Articulate 360) for a variety of course modalities (online, hybrid, and face-to-face)
    • Collaborate with subject matter experts and stakeholders to provide instructional design support through consultation with individuals and collaborative teams.
    • Gathers information and develops interactive instructional learning objects that meet learning objectives and project goals.
    • Continuously evaluate the effectiveness of learning content and manage and maintain course updates.
    • Apply best practices in adult learning and education and mentor others on effective approaches to learning and development.
    • Build and cultivate collaborative and productive relationships with team members, a wide range of colleague, and internal and allied content providers.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Job Requirements:

    • Demonstrated experience and expertise in designing, developing, and delivering learning programs across different modalities (asynchronous and synchronous online delivery, face-to-face, hybrid).
    • Excellent project management and communication skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and adhere to milestones, and deadlines.
    • Proficient with multimedia production tools, eLearning software, (e.g. Articulate 360) and web-conferencing tools (e.g. Zoom) and learning management systems.
    • Knowledge of SCORM and accessibility standards.
    • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
    • Working knowledge of basic graphic design.

    Bachelor’s Degree (preferably in Education, Instructional Design, or a related field) with a minimum of 4 years of experience. Experience must be in an area of instructional technology, eLearning design and implementation, or a related field. An advanced degree in instructional design is preferred. Experience in teaching or training, working with an association, and interest in architecture are ideal.

    Work Location: 100% Remote from the AIA Approved States: DC, MD, VA, AR, DE, FL, GA*, ID, IL, IA, KS, KY, ME, MI, MN, MT, NH, NM, NY, NC, OK, PA, SD, TN, UT, VT, WI, WY. This position will periodically be required to be on-site at the AIA Headquarters in Washington, DC.
