The Learning Technologist (LT) is part of the Teaching & Learning team at Carey Business School. The LTs main purpose is to help staff, faculty, teaching assistants, and students succeed through the exploration and use of educational technology. The LT will work as an integral part of the Learning Innovation and Technology (LIT) team within Teaching & Learning, and recommend, implement, and assess new technologies for online, onsite, and hybrid courses. The LT will research new technologies, especially instructional technologies; quickly learn new technology; teach faculty and staff how to use new technologies; trouble-shoot problems with technology; document step-by-step instructions for using that technology, and provide services in instructional technologies such as uploading materials, fixing links, and fixing quiz times in Canvas.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Course Development, Innovation, & Improvement Support & Consultation (35%)
- Collaborates with team members to develop and test new technologies. For example, assists in evaluation and pilots of new and emerging instructional technologies based on sound pedagogy and specific instructional needs.
- Collaborates with team members and faculty to develop technology enriched course materials using new and emerging instructional technologies, digital media, web-based technologies, etc.
- Consults with faculty, teaching assistants, and teaching consultants on a variety of instructional technologies such as, Canvas, TurnItIn, Microsoft Teams, Voicethread, Zoom, Poll Everywhere, Perusal.
- Assists faculty in effectively integrating instructional technologies in face-to-face, online, and hybrid courses.
- Assists in technological aspects of new faculty and staff onboarding process.
- Assists faculty in developing reusable learning objects (Videos, lecture capture etc.) and integrating them into their courses.
Course Delivery Support & Training (30%)
- Provides services in instructional technologies such as uploading materials, fixing links, fixing quiz times in Canvas.
- Provides support for instructional technologies such as Canvas, TurnItIn, Microsoft Teams, Remote Proctor Now, Zoom, Poll Everywhere to teaching assistants and faculty during the term.
- Determines if faculty and teaching assistants (teaching teams) need trouble shooting, need a service done for them, or need one-on-one training.
- Trains teaching teams in one-on-one or small group meetings during the term.
- Trouble shoots technical problems during the term.
- Works with other Hopkins schools and Central IT in solving technological issues as related to Canvas and other shared learning resources.
Technical Development & Research (15%)
- Assists in testing new features and piloting new solutions in conjunction with other Johns Hopkins University (JHU) schools.
- Assumes an admin/leadership role on eLearning tools as assigned.
- Keeps abreast of developments of related instructional technologies.
- Research and disseminate educational technology resources and best practices in technology enhanced teaching and learning.
Training Workshops & Documents (15%)
- Designs, develops and delivers training workshops to introduce faculty, TAs, students, and staff to the emerging instructional technologies and their effective application in teaching and learning.
- Develops print and video training materials and uploads to Teaching & Learning@Carey resource website.

- Use online synchronous programs such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams meeting application.
- Use online learning management systems (Canvas) and integrated technologies, including a working knowledge of HTML coding.
- Use quality assurance and accessibility tools.
- Use lecture and screen capture tools such as Camtasia, Panopto etc.
- Use MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Learn on the job.
- Incorporate adult learning theories and emerging technologies.
- Work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Education, or related field.
- Two years of progressively responsible experience in course design and development, faculty training, or program/course assessment/evaluation required.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience leading sessions using a Web conferencing tool (e.g. Zoom), developing courses in course management systems (e.g., Blackboard) and utilizing web design tools (e.g., Photoshop, DreamWeaver, HTML, CSS), digital video, and audio editing software strongly preferred.
- Experience developing courses in Canvas strongly preferred.
- Experience writing and editing using HTML strongly preferred.
- 1-2 years experience in an institution of higher education in instructional technology support, instructional design or in tech support.
- Experience as a software engineer.
- Experience working with artificial intelligence (AI)
- Experience developing asynchronous training sites & materials.

Starting Salary Range: $25.40-$34.90-$44.40 HRLY (Commensurate with experience)

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
