Position Overview
Under the general direction of the Dean for Student Learning – Transitional Studies, the Instructional Designer supports student access, retention, and success, specifically supporting the success of historically marginalized student populations through implementation of anti-racist pedagogy, inclusive design practices, and other strategies. The Instructional Designer collaborates closely with the Learning, Technology, and Design team (including the Assistant Director of eLearning); Student Accessibility Services; the Office of Equity and Inclusion; the campus library; faculty; and Student Learning leadership to champion, implement, and assess transformational instructional practices across the college. The Instructional Designer teaches 1-2 class sections each year at the direction of the Dean.
As the Instructional Designer, it is expected that the following qualities will be demonstrated daily: a high degree of understanding and empathy for all students, faculty, staff and visitors, as well as the ability to encourage the inclusion of all voices in decision-making, promoting equity in all areas, and actively working against institutionalized norms of oppression against historically marginalized people.
Employee Type: Full Time Exempt, Permanent
Initial Salary: $72,000 (includes 5% King County Premium Pay), subject to any legislated COLAs on 7/1/2023
Supervising Position: Dean for Student Learning
Essential Duties
Awareness and Implementation of Inclusive Design Strategies
- Provides general training and coaching for faculty in inclusive design and anti-racist pedagogy for all course modalities (face-to-face, hybrid, and online)
- Stays up-to-date and shares knowledge of best practices in inclusive design, anti-racist pedagogy, and equitable assessment of learning
- Develops and manages a system for conducting anti-racist/inclusive pedagogy course audits, especially for “gateway” and “gatekeeper” courses
- Provides faculty with support and instructional strategies for working with specific student accommodations and serves as a bridge between faculty and Student Accessibility Services
- Supports the creation and adoption of Open Educational Resources
- Partners with the Office of Equity and Inclusion, the Teaching and Learning Academy, and other campus stakeholders to accomplish the above
Support for Technology Adoption and eLearning
- Stays up-to-date on educational technology and best practices
- Supports adoption of new tools and technology while ensuring accessibility of those tools
- Provides general training and coaching for faculty on incorporating instructional technology in face-to-face, hybrid, and online courses
Ensuring High Quality, Consistency, and Equity in Cascadia’s Student Success Course
- Maintains integrity of common assignments/assessments across sections
- Provides training and coaching for faculty teaching the course, including arranging mentoring for faculty new to the course
- Embeds inclusive design principles into the course
- Embeds equitable/anti-racist grading practices into the course
- Liaises with Guided Pathways, Advising, and Library teams to keep shared assignments current, relevant, and meaningful
Other
- Provides training, development, and consultations for faculty in 1:1 sessions, small groups, and large groups, and in multiple modalities
- Serves as co-chair of the Teaching and Learning Academy
- Provides leadership for New Faculty Orientation
- Advises Student Learning leadership on issues related to pedagogy and instructional design
- Performs other duties as assigned
Education and Experience:
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree from a regionally accredited college/university in a discipline currently taught at Cascadia College
- One year full-time (or equivalent) community college-level teaching
- Experience providing faculty professional development
- Experience implementing strategies related to inclusive and anti-racist instruction
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and the ability to support a diverse workplace and educational environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience using an online learning management system (LMS), such as Canvas
- Experience using a variety of technologies to support student success
- Demonstrated success in facilitating the learning of and improving learning outcomes for Black, Indigenous, and other students of color and other historically marginalized groups
- Experience reviewing courses and providing feedback to faculty
- Experience with authentic and/or program-level assessment
Physical Work Environment
Semi-Sedentary Work: Involves staying in a stationary position to a significant degree. Jobs are sedentary if moving is required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
The College is currently in hybrid operations, with many assignments completed in an online environment during this time. Full-time employees are expected to be on-campus at least three (3) days per week with the option to work remotely for the remainder of their working days. Employees will need to provide their own remote workspace and internet access, noting the College will provide technical equipment and support for online work needs. During on-campus operations, this position will perform work in a standard office setting, use standard office equipment and physically attend meetings both on and off campus and requires the ability to communicate in person or through appropriate means.
