    Our Mission
    The J. Paul Getty Museum seeks to inspire curiosity about, and enjoyment and understanding of, the visual arts by collecting, conserving, exhibiting and interpreting works of art of outstanding quality and historical importance and is one of four programs of the J. Paul Getty Trust. The Museum operates two facilities, the Getty Villa in Malibu, which exhibits its collection of Greek and Roman antiquities, and the Getty Center in Brentwood, which displays its collections of European art: Medieval and Renaissance illuminated manuscripts, paintings, sculpture, decorative arts, drawings to 1900, and photography to the present day (including non-European works). The Museum mounts approximately 25 temporary exhibitions a year across its two sites; maintains an annual permanent gallery improvement program and offers wide-ranging and ambitious programming for its visitors.
    The Opportunity
    The Education Department of the J. Paul Getty Museum seeks an Education Specialist for Digital and Virtual Learning Experiences to oversee Getty Education’s approach to digital and virtual learning content, implement innovative technology solutions, and improve diverse audience and user engagement across the education department’s digital project portfolio. As a member of the Education and Public Programs Department, the Education Specialist for Digital and Virtual Learning Experiences will have broad knowledge of museum education best practices, teaching, pedagogy and content development in online environments, and commitment to diversity, equity, access, and inclusion principles for audience engagement. Under minimal direction, the Education Specialist for Digital and Virtual Learning Experiences supervises associated program staff and reports to the Head of Education. The successful candidate is responsible for steering the adoption and expansion of the department’s Virtual Art Exploration program, cultivating partnerships, strategically aligning with content providers for the digital programs, and devising and designing modules, programs, and online K12 teacher professional development. Additionally, the Education Specialist for Digital and Virtual Learning Experiences will oversee ambitious projects to ensure the Education and Public Programs department is fulfilling its “digital first” remit with key initiatives. The successful candidate will be a Subject Matter Expert on e-learning instructional and informational design, appropriate content treatment and media, and effective online delivery strategies and platforms. This is an exciting opportunity to join a new division within Getty Museum Education focused on creating and spreading extraordinary and equitable access to art through digital learning environments that can reach teacher and student audiences around the globe.

    Major Job Responsibilities:

    • With minimal oversight from the Head of Education, this position is responsible for executing the Getty’s digital engagement strategy and suite of innovative virtual content to fulfill audience engagement goals at the Getty Center and Getty Villa.
    • Ability to deliver effective strategic plans and educational proofs of concept demonstrations on behalf of the Virtual Art Explorations program, online K12 teacher professional development, and web-based digital content and curriculum development.
    • Design and develop creative, innovative, interactive digital learner-centered content that can be delivered nationally and globally using the virtual classroom.
    • Improve and redefine market strategy to maximize engagement for diverse user populations for all of Getty’s digital educational resources and offerings.
    • Develop and leverage stakeholder relationships to promote awareness of Getty’s digital and virtual learning experiences nationwide.
    • Leverage current research and educational knowledge and liaise with K12 teachers, administrators, and districts to ascertain needs, create goals, and devise new content strategies.
    • Establish working relationships with various school systems to explore digital solutions and collaborations.
    • Evaluate and test multiple online tools, educational technology platforms, and provide data comparison, evaluation, and analysis.
    • Focus on audience satisfaction, partner development, inter-departmental cooperation, and successful program outcomes.
    • Guide the development of culturally relevant online content for K12 audiences aligned with state and national standards; identifying opportunities where digital learning can have the greatest positive impact on learning.
    • Stay current on mobile and other technologies students’ and teachers’ use and implement responsive designs.
    • Implement modeling of instructional best practices to support adoption and expansion of Getty content in classrooms nationwide and globally.
    • Recommend annual learning pathways, online modules, professional webinars and e-learning sessions for K12 teachers that are creative, unique, and engaging.
    • Oversee the supervision and mentorship of digital teaching interns and work in tandem with K12, Gallery Education, and docent program teams to ensure effective virtual training and content delivery.
    • Working together with the Docent Program Manager, Education Specialist for Gallery Education, and Villa Education Manager, support the research, development, and implementation of training, continuing education, and evaluation for docents and interns responsible for virtual engagement with public audiences.
    • Optimize project management functions by maintaining proactive communications, develop design plans, timelines, and status checks for all digital projects.
    • Serve as a catalyst for change to adopt new technologies, practices, and processes.
    • Serve as a strategic thought partner in content development and provide recommendations for the future direction of Getty’s digital learning and engagement team.

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree in museum education, art education, art history, or closely related field strongly preferred
    • 5-8 years of project/process management and subject area experience
    • Foreign language skills

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Prefer Master’s degree in in education, education technology, learning technology, museum education, art education, art history, or closely related field.
    • Proven thought leader on existing and emerging digital learning technology and learning management systems.
    • Deep knowledge in digital and virtual learning and all aspects of instructional design for various formats, including synchronous and asynchronous options, eLearning, mobile, and various types of performance support.
    • Expert in liaising with all levels of organizations, schools, and districts.
    • Familiarity with UX design and optimizing user experiences.
    • Proven experience in curriculum development, instructional design, modeling and coaching, and facilitating professional development experiences.
    • Committed to diversity, equity, access, and inclusion (DEAI), social justice and culturally responsive teaching strategies.
    • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills for building effective working relationships at all levels within the Museum, and the ability to foster a collaborative and inclusive team environment.
    • Desire to make Getty’s digital education program responsive to the needs of a diverse range of audiences.
    • Ability to think creatively and use new technologies to expand outreach and program impact.
    • Proven ability to accurately prioritize digital workflows and lead concurrent projects.
    • Proven experience planning, forecasting, and managing a budget.
