Moodle Users Association (MUA) is the community arm of Moodle project. MUA connects committed Moodlers from around the world. It allows you along with other MUA members to have a strong voice with new projects to get into Moodle core. The voting for project proposals for the July-December 2022 project development cycle is now closed.

In total there are total four projects which have been proposed for this Moodle Users Association project development cycle which are Moodle reporting, Wiki import/export, Default settings for Activities and Resource Completion criteria, PDF annotation assignment type.

Out of these project the votes received for each project is as follows:

The top voted project – Improve Moodle reporting will brings a consistent experience in Moodle reports. In version 4.0, there was a new report builder introduced in Moodle core, but the existing reports were not migrated to this new interface. As a result the reporting in Moodle is very inconsistent as many reports don’t have the ability to sort, filter, or export report data.

The project will now undergo finalizing the project requirements and committee review before another round of final voting cycle and afterwards it will be included in Moodle core in upcoming versions. You can also join the Moodle Users Association to propose & include the functionality in Moodle Core based on the votes by Association members.

Moodle 4.1 – the upcoming major version of the Moodle LMS is all set to make it one of the most feature rich release. The next Moodle LTS version will include many new features and improved UX/UI for different areas. As per the recent updates, the Moodle 4.1 code freeze will happen on October 17. The new major version is scheduled to be released on November 28.

After the code freeze on October 17, the Integration team will not accept any new code. It will be followed by the QA cycle which is scheduled to commence from October 24. If you are a serious Moodler, you can join the QA testing cycle. Please check out this link to understand the QA Process before the Moodle release.

Among the key issues fixed in this week, the major development is that the Label resource in Moodle will be renamed. With Moodle 4.1, the Label resource will be named as Text and Media. The other major updates include:

  • Create a new “Grades summary” report in the grade book
  • Provide a way to set HTML Editor content regardless of the current editor
  • VideoJS library upgrade to 7.20.3
  • Mustache  Library upgrade to 2.14.2

Waiting for the Moodle 4.1 release? Check out this list of new exciting features coming in Moodle 4.1. When you will be updating your Moodle site to 4.1? It is recommended to plan your upgrade since it will be Long Term Release version.

Moodle Plugins allows you to extend the functionality of core LMS to meet your institution specific requirements. Moodle Plugins are one of the easy way to add new features to Moodle. There are more than 2,000 plugins contributed by the community in the official plugins directory. In this post, we will have a look at the Restriction by section completion Moodle plugin which allows you to restrict the course section until the previous sections are completed.

Moodle allows multiple restriction conditions by default. Restriction can be based upon Activity completion, date, grade, the group or grouping the students are in or even user profile fields. The ‘Restriction set’ button also allows for more complex criteria requiring nested conditions.

You can download the Restriction by section completion plugin from the plugins directory here. Please follow this guide if you want to learn about how to install a Moodle plugin. Once installed it is ready to use without the need for any configuration.

As a teacher you can add the “Section Completed” availability condition to activities / resources / sections in the courses. While adding the condition, you have to pick the section which the student is required to complete before accessing the activity / resource / section.

The plugin is developed by Stefan Scholz who is also the developer for other popular Moodle plugins like Designer course format. The plugin was built to enable teachers to easily restrict activities or sections to students that have completed another section.

There is another way of applying such section based restriction by adding several restrictions but it is too difficult. This plugin simplifies that for the teacher as well as shows only one condition for the students instead of showing multiple restrictions.

The MoodleMoot DACH 2023 will be organized from June 13-16 in Zürich. The event was cancelled in 2022 due to unknown reasons. It was last held in 2020 during the COVID pandemic as a completely virtual event. The MoodleMoot DACH 2023 will include DevCamp & Barcamp sessions.

The community event is hosted by Technische Hochschule Lübeck, Vienna University of Technology, University of Vienna, Academic Moodle Cooperation (AMC), ETH Zurich & eDaktik.at – Moodle Partner Austria.

Moodle – the most popular open source Learning Management system (LMS) is used across 242 countries among 340 million users. It is used across all kinds of learning environments including the primary grade students, schools, universities, corporate training etc. In this post, we will see the Popup activities course format which can be quite handy for you as a pre-primary/elementary school teacher.

Popup Activities course format can display the course resources and activities embedded in modals instead of redirecting from the course page. This can be quite helpful for the students who are new to online learning. It is a perfect fit for younger students who will find it easy to navigate through course resources and activities. When students finish an activity or resource, they return to the course page by closing the modal without waiting for the course page to load again.

You can download the Popup Course format from the official Moodle plugins directory. The plugin is developed by Daniel Thies. You can follow this guide to install the plugin on your Moodle site. Once installed, there are basic configuration steps related to navigation and course index.

As a teacher you can change the course format to the Popup Activities and start using it. By default it will not show any change to the teacher role, so you need to check it as a student. Currently, the popup activities course format supports – Book, Choice, Custom certificate , File, Folder, H5P activity, Page, Poster, SCORM, URL, and Videotime activities. Other unsupported activities will be displayed as normally like in topics format.

Moodle is the world’s most popular open source Learning Management System which is used across 240+ countries and more than 300 million users across the world. The capability to fit into any elearning environment makes Moodle one of the most widely used open source LMS around the world. Recently, one of the educators asked about the possibility of hiding the timer in quiz in Moodle forums.

According to a new forum thread shared by Philipp Imhof on Moodle community forums, he needs the capability to hide the quiz timer to avoid the stress for students. He suggested to have the options to make timer configurable with possibility to show/hide, mandatory show during last X Minutes.

Other prominent Moodle users also joined the discussion and shared their views. Matthias Giger shared a code to hide the timer for users who don’t want to see it. Rick Jerz also supported the idea of hiding the timer from accessibility point of view. Tim Hunt – the maintainer of the Moodle quiz and question bank since long time also showed his interest.

At present, the Moodle quiz timer is showing the time remaining in the quiz on the top of the quiz page. In the upcoming Moodle 4.1 version, the quiz timer will respects the time extensions made while the quiz is underway.
