Gamify your Moodle course using the Game Plugin

Gamify your Moodle course using the Game Plugin
Gamify your Moodle course using the Game Plugin

Gamification is one of the most prominent method in online teaching. There are many studies which have shown the benefits of gamification in online teaching. In Moodle there are many ways to gamify your Moodle course. One of them is to use the Game plugin which is one of the most popular Moodle plugins since last many years.

The Game plugin for Moodle allows you to create many interactive games for your students. The games includes

  • Hangman – This game takes words from either a Glossary or quiz short answer questions and generates a hangman puzzle. Teacher can set the number of words that each game contains, if shows the first or last letter, or if show the question or the answer at the end.
  • Crossword – This game takes words from either a Glossary or quiz short answer questions and generates a random crossword puzzle. Teacher can set the maximum number of columns/rows or words that contains. Student can press the button “Check crossword” to check if the answers are correct. Every crossword is dynamic so it is different to every student
  • Cryptex – This game is like a crossword but the answers are hidden inside a random cryptex.
  • Millionaire – This game takes words from multiple choice quiz questions and creates a “Who wants to be a Millionaire” style game complete with the three lifelines.
  • Sudoku – This game shows a sudoku puzzle to the students with not enough numbers to allow it to be solved. For each question the student correctly answers an additional number is slotted into the puzzle to make it easier to solve.
  • Snakes and Ladders – The students have to traverse a traditional “Snakes and Ladders” board by answering questions taken from either a Glossary or quiz short answer questions. As they get an answer right, the dice is rolled and a random number displayed.
  • The hidden picture – This game randomly grabs an image from a glossary and hides it behind panels. As each question is answered correctly a portion of the image is revealed. How fast can they guess the image? The picture can be taken from another glossary, in case of glossaries with no pictures.
  • Book with questions – When the student answers correct can go to the next chapter.

The best thing is that this plugin uses your already created resources like quiz, glossary or questions. You don’t need to create additional resources to use this plugin. The Game plugin is recently updated to a new version compatible with Moodle 4.1 version.

You can download the Game plugin from the official plugins directory here. If you are new to Moodle, please read this guide to learn how to install a Moodle plugin.

Check out Data Curso - A tool for Instructional Design

Moodle LMS has been one of the most popular Open Source Learning Management System since last 20 years. There are many new tools developed around Moodle to integrate and expand Moodle’s functionality. Many of them are available as free Moodle plugins while others are available as paid integrations. During the recently concluded MoodleMoot Global 2022, Buen Data team – Moodle Partner from Columbia presented a new tool – Data Curso.

Data Curso is a new tool which is intended to help teachers create Moodle course based on sound instructional design principles. The tool is still under development but it offers a really useful for Moodle teachers to choose best activities/resources depending on their classroom needs.

Based on the inputs provided by the teacher which includes details about the course environment, students age, students internet access etc. Once the teachers provides all the details about course environment, the tool will provide ready-made document to create the Moodle course. There is even possibility to create all the activities/resources in Moodle course based on inputs.

The Data Curso tool is developed by Buen Data – Moodle Partner in Columbia. It is expected to be released by Q2 of 2023. At the present moment, the tool is based on the Gagne’s model of instructional design. However, in the upcoming versions, it will include other Instruction design methods like ADDIE model etc.

Here is the video from the MoodleMoot Global 2022 presented by Hernan Alonso:

I am pretty much excited by the endless possibilities offered by this tool and the way how it can be helpful for teachers to choose the best activities to start with their course.

Moodle becomes the founding partner of Higher Education for Good foundation

Moodle LMS team has joined the Higher Education for Good foundation as a founding partner. The Higher Education for Good foundation is a not for profit foundation with a mission to develop and promote new models of humanistic higher education for a sustainable society.

Humanistic Higher Education goes beyond acquiring work skills. It empowers young people with the means of  self-realization, and encourages a systemic world view in which humankind co-habits in harmony with other living beings within planetary boundaries. By focusing on human dignity and collective well-being, it fosters both individual flourishing and sustainable ways of living together.

A Humanistic model is influenced by — and influences — three interacting structural dimensions:

  • Young people – To engage with youth in the co-creation of the new humanistic education models to transform society.
  • Organizations – To educate young people to lead organizations whose mission is to integrate sustainable economic, societal, and environmental goals, responsible companies, multilateral institutions, foundations, cooperatives, non-profits, etc.
  • Technological changes – To integrate new technologies (for example, A.I.) such as complex tools with the potential to both generate and solve environmental, societal, and economic challenges

The Higher Education for Good foundation has a innovative initiative – The Youth Talks. The Youth Talk initiative is giving voice to young people between the ages of 15–29 years old, around the world to better understand their aspirations, the challenges they face.

“Youth Talks” is just the beginning of a series of projects that the Higher Education for Good Foundation is implementing to help us rethink tomorrow’s education models from the ground up.

Check out the official website of Youth Talk Initiative here – https://survey.youth-talks.org/survey/en/questions and share your own opinion.

Check out the most important aspects of your exam using the Quiz Analytics plugin

Moodle LMS is the most popular open source Learning management System (LMS) in the world. It is used by more than 350 million users around the globe. With more than 2050 plugins contributed by the Community developer it is easy to customise Moodle’s features in all areas. In this post we will discuss about the Quiz Analytics plugin.

The Quiz Analytics plugin provides detailed analytics for a quiz in Moodle course via visually appealing graphs. The graphs are distributed under the following tabs:

  • Attempt Summary- This tab contains the logged in user’s statistics for the last attempt he/she made on that quiz. In case of quizzes allowing single attempt, that attempt is considered the last attempt.
  • My Progress and Predictions- This tab contains several sub-tabs which as a whole gives the idea of how the logged in user has fared over time and the hardest question he/she faced. There’s also a tab specifically for quizzes offering multiple attempts to show the logged user a predictive analysis depending on other users’ attempts and best scores.
  • Question Categories’ Analysis- This tab is dedicated to the categories/tags all the questions are associated with. The graphs here in the sub-tabs shows the question distribution among categories and also an idea of how challenging each of the categories proved to be.
  • Scores’ and Questions’ Stats- This tab contains two sub tabs, one showing the number of students in each grade category and the other providing a thorough analysis of all the questions present in the quiz.

The plugin has been actively maintained by the developer since last many Major Moodle versions. It has also received Early Bird badge for Moodle 4.1 recently.

You can download the latest version of the Quiz Analytics Plugin from the official Plugins directory here. If you are new to Moodle, you can follow this guide to learn how to install Moodle plugins.

The Quiz Analytics plugin seems to be providing a better way of understanding a user’s attempts in the quiz. The students can understand their own progress with visual graphs.
