Moodle Educators - Allow the students to download course content easily for offline use

Moodle LMS is one of the most feature rich and flexible open-source Learning Management System. It allows you to completely customize and add new features via Plugins to meet the institution specific demands. In this post, we will see how you can setup your Moodle course to be easily downloaded by your students for offline use.

The Download course content feature was offered for the first time in Moodle 3.10. The new feature development was contributed by Moodle User’s Association.

By enabling this download course content feature, specific course items, currently content from the File, Folder, Page, and Label can be downloaded by students. They can use these files for offline consumption.

This feature needs to be enabled by the site admin and then must be used by the educators to let their students download the course content. When it is enabled, the students will see a Download Course Content button on the top right corner. Clicking the button will display a pop-up and link to a zipped file.

Here is a screencast showing how to use this feature in Moodle:

Downloading content from their online courses also enables learners to browse this content offline, without having to be permanently connected to the internet. Teachers, of course, can also download their own course materials to access outside of Moodle.

Moodle Admins – Use the Moodle Benchmark plugin to test your Moodle LMS

Moodle Admins - Use the Moodle Benchmark plugin to test your Moodle LMS

Moodle LMS is used by more than 350+ million users around the world. There are more than 150+k registered Moodle sites in the registered directory across 240 countries. While there are many users across the world, it is helpful for the Moodle Admins to performs various tests to determine the quality of the Moodle platform.

The Moodle Benchmark plugin helps you to assess your server to determine the quality of your Moodle platform. After the test is completed, the plugin provides you a score which reveals the points which might be affecting your Moodle LMS.

You can download the latest version of the Moodle Benchmark plugin from the official directory here. Once installed, you can access the benchmark report by clicking the ‘Reports’ section of the Site administration page and selecting the ‘Benchmark’ option.

You can start the test by clicking the ‘Start the benchmark’ button. It is recommended to perform the benchmark test several times to get an average.

The benchmark has five test groups with two items in each of them. It will test the Moodle instance’s server speed, processor speed, hard drive speed, database speed, and loading page speed. Each test result will have three columns:

  • Time (in seconds) shows how long it takes for your system to complete the test. The lower the number, the better.
  • Acceptable limit shows a soft limit of the test. A warning will be displayed if a test result has a value above the limit.
  • Critical limit shows the maximum duration of the test. If a test result has a value above this limit, it means that the test has failed.

If any of the test results above do not pass the limit, a warning message will be displayed on the end of the page. The message will point you in the right direction of how to improve the server performance. You can use the results generated by this plugin to check how your Moodle instance is performing on average.

GEMS Education Launches Free Youth Accelerator Programme in Support of Student Entrepreneurs

GEMS Education, one of the world’s oldest and largest K-12 private education providers, has recently launched the Youth Entrepreneurship Accelerator Programme that covers all aspects of turning an idea into a fully active startup, an official statement said.

As a part of the initiative, more than 65 teams of student entrepreneurs from schools throughout the UAE have put forward their business ideas for inclusion in the region’s first school-based accelerator programme, the Youth Entrepreneurship Accelerator powered by GEMS World Academy – Dubai (GWA) and sponsored by CAFU.

Speaking about the development, Director of Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Social Impact of GEMS World Academy – Dubai, Helen Al Uzaizi, said:

With the changes the world is seeing today, instilling an entrepreneurial mindset within our students is more important than ever. Through this real-life, project-based approach to business, students will build the skills that are essential for their future. The accelerator is the first of its kind to bring this high level of business acumen and entrepreneurial support that we see within global accelerators for adult entrepreneurs. Our goal through this programme is to help students develop real investment-ready businesses.

Open to pupils across the GEMS Education network, the accelerator, which is based and managed by staff at GWA, aims to support early-stage, growth-focused businesses through education and mentorship, transforming students into founders and their dreams and ideas into fully-fledged startups.

Since late February, the programme’s selection team has been reviewing submissions from students in Grades 9-12 (Years 10-13), drawing up the final list of 12 teams, made up of 42 students in total, who will benefit from after-school sessions led by digital EdTech platform 8billionideas.

Over the next 12 weeks, the selected students will be guided by a cohort of experienced mentors who will provide feedback on their work as they proceed through the programme. Each participating team will comprise a CEO, Product Manager, Chief Marketing Officer, Innovation Lead, and Chief Financial Officer.

Nabra Al Busaidi, Community and Sustainability Manager, CAFU, added:

The Youth Entrepreneurship Accelerator programme offers an exciting opportunity to work and collaborate with the next generation of changemakers. We are delighted to be sponsoring this initiative by GEMS Education and GEMS World Academy – Dubai. At CAFU, we are fully committed to supporting the growth and development of young entrepreneurs. This unique offering will help safeguard the UAE’s startup ecosystem by empowering students and fostering their entrepreneurial spirit. As a Dubai-born brand deeply rooted in the UAE, this is close to our hearts, and we believe that this accelerator will prepare tomorrow’s leaders for success in an ever-evolving economic landscape.

As the accelerator’s main sponsor, CAFU will provide mentorship and access to its network of business experts to help all participating students grow and succeed. In addition, the platform will also cover all costs of the programme. Topics covered by the programme include:

  • Problem identification and solution.
  • Solution development and prototyping.
  • Marketing sizing and go-to-market strategy.
  • Financial modelling and planning.
  • Resourcing, leadership, and management.
  • Investor pitching.
