Moodle Teachers – Let students enrol in a course after completing course in other category

Moodle Teachers - Let students enrol in a course after completing course in other category

Moodle plugins allows you to customize the appearance of Moodle LMS as well as extend its features. There may be times when as Moodle teacher you want the students to be enrolled in a course after they complete a course. In this post we will see how you can setup your Moodle course so that students need to complete a course in another category to enrol in your course.

In previous post, we have discussed about the ‘Course Completed Enrolment‘ plugin through which you can enrol users into a course after they have completed another course. But the plugin for today is ‘Enrol by Category’ which allows the users to enrol themselves into a course if they finished a course in a specific category previously. The Enrol by Category plugin also offers a waiting list feature.

Enrol by Category plugin

You can download the Enrol by Category plugin from the official plugin’s directory here. In case you are new to Moodle, please check out this guide to learn how to install Moodle plugin.

Once installed, you can add the enrollment method to your course. You can restrict a category as restriction for enrolment. So, the participants can only enrol if they finished a course in that specified category. Additionally, a time limit can be set to limit the course to participants which for example have finished a course in the specified category at most 6 months earlier. The time limit can be configured to count from when the course starts or when the course was created.

Additionally, you can setup a waitlist which will pause the enrolments when the maximum number of participants is reached. The plugin will send an email to all waitlist participants whenever there is an open slot through a scheduled task.  The teacher can manually enrol participants from the waiting list into the course bypassing the maximum participants limit.

What are the other popular Moodle plugins you are using on your Moodle site? Please share with us in the comments section below.

Moodle Teachers – Share your PDF files without let students download them

Moodle Teachers - Share your PDF files without let students download them
Moodle Teachers - Share your PDF files without let students download them

Moodle LMS offers you one of the most flexible & customizable learning management system. The online courses contain resources which are free to downloading on students’ devices and consuming later. But there may be times that you want to protect your PDF files from being downloaded by your students. In this post we will discuss about the solution to address this problem.

The Secure PDF Moodle plugin allows you to secure your PDF files by converting them to images. So, the students will not be able to download the PDF files and share it with others or upload them online. This can be extremely helpful for those institutes, corporates who want to keep their learning resources confidential from public.

The Secure PDF Moodle plugin need the php-imagick module on your server. The plugin can be downloaded from official Moodle plugins directory here. In case you are new to Moodle please follow this guide to learn how to install a Moodle plugin.

Once installed and configured (you need to Configure imagemagick to allow PDF reading), the activity is ready to be used within your Moodle course. You can add any PDF file to it and students will get an image of each page and not the PDF itself.

The first time you view the PDF file, it will take some time to display as the PDF file is being converted into images. But after the first view, it will be cached for other users.

The students can’t right click on the image and save it. The activity will be marked as complete only when the user saw all the pages in the PDF File.

The Secure PDF plugin can do an excellent job in protecting your PDF files from downloading. In case you are looking for a solution, then I will recommend trying it. The only challenge is that the conversion from PDF to images will consume some server resources depending on the size of the PDF files and number of pages.
