Indian edtech giant Byju’s raises $250 million Through Structured Debt Issuance

Indian edtech giant Byju’s raises $250 million Through Structured Debt Issuance

Indian edtech major Byju’s has reportedly raised $250 million through structured debt issuance to Davidson Kempner Capital Management – a New York headquartered investment firm. The company raised money through a mix of non-convertible debentures and compulsorily convertible debentures – with the upside in the latter linked to the IPO valuation of Aakash – one of Byju’s subsidiaries slated to go public.

The company is close to securing an additional $700 million. The Bengaluru-headquartered startup, India’s most valuable, is finalizing the remainder of the capital from a sovereign fund, the people said. That capital, expected to arrive in two weeks, will come into the startup as part of a convertible note that caps the valuation at $22 billion.

Byju’s has maintained its $22 billion valuation throughout the past year even as numerous high-profile startups globally have had severe corrections in their value. The large financing round in Byju’s comes at a time when the Indian startup ecosystem is reeling from a funding crunch amid weakening global economy.

The startup — which prepares students pursuing undergraduate and graduate-level courses, and in recent years has expanded to serve all school-going students — has amassed 150 million users who use its learning app while hundreds of thousands of students visit the firm’s brick-and-mortar centers.

Byju’s, like many other edtechs, benefited from the lockdown as more parents explored digital supplements to continue their kids’ education. The startup spent more than $2.5 billion in the past two and a half years to acquire startups globally as the Indian firm expanded and broadened its offerings in several international markets, Prosus Ventures, a backer of Byju’s, disclosed in a filing last year.

Byju’s has faced a lot of controversies over the last couple of years amid reports of toxic work culture which promotes misselling. The company has meanwhile grown to become India’s biggest edtech company through a flurry of acquisitions.

Co-founded by Sarah Hoeckner and Eva van Leeuwen in 2021, Young Heroes offers learning and development programmes for young professionals and customizes the offering to Gen Z’s learning and development needs supported by a scalable SaaS platform, taking this responsibility off of businesses. The platform connects young talent with knowledgeable coaches and provides practical training, workshops, and honest advice related to careers and professional growth.

Speaking about the fundraising, Co-founder & CEO of Young Heroes, Eva van Leeuwen, said:

Young Heroes is already serving businesses across the country, and we have momentum. The investment will support us in expanding our team and further developing the product. We have strong growth ambitions, and the investment pushes us to go faster. We have found experienced partners in G-Force and the NOM who want to continue this journey with us. We are really looking forward to it.

The program is available to young professionals from various organizations. Offerings from Young Heroes are based on the tested techniques of parent company YFK Research & Marketing, established by Eva van Leeuwen in 2016. Young Heroes aims to empower young professionals to confidently shape their future by building self-confidence through knowledge and community.

According to the company, Gen Z workers will represent 30% of the workforce by 2023. Their attitudes, behaviours and expectations have been developed in an unpredictable and constantly changing labour market. This group’s demands around ongoing education and professional growth are unparalleled.

Investment Manager of NOM, Ytsen van der Meer, commented:

Young Heroes is a young HR tech startup with an enthusiastic entrepreneurial team. The company focuses on a recognizable problem in a large (Dutch) market. What is clear is that the story is resonating with several companies. The investment by NOM and G-Force allows the company to continue this and offer young professionals coaching and guidance with which they can start their careers with flying colours.

BetterPlace, a blue-collar workforce management company, has recently announced that it has acquired Bueno Finance, a financial services platform providing short-term credit to blue-collar workers across India. According to sources, the merger was driven by the funding winter in the fintech sector, with Bueno needing help to raise funds. BetterPlace, on the other hand, was seeking to expand into the lending space.

Bueno Finance and BetterPlace operate in the same segment, catering to the blue-collared workforce and counting food delivery companies such as Swiggy and Zomato as their clients.

Founded by Saurav Gandhi in 2019, Bueno Finance aims to help customers build and develop their creditworthiness. It offers loans to blue-collar workers. The Bengaluru-based firm has raised about $80 million in total equity from Macquarie Capital, Site Capital Partners, Jungle Ventures, and British International Investment, among others.

BetterPlace, co-founded by Pravin Agarwala and Saurabh Tandon, offers a software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform.
