The DCR’s mission is to increase the quantity, quality, and efficiency of clinical research at MGH. DCR nurtures and empowers the next generation of clinical research investigators, supports study staff, and provides guidance, resources, and tools to all members of the clinical research community. DCR provides navigation, consultation, hands-on direct support, and education through fifteen Units, nine Centers and the Support Services Core.
The Instructional Designer supports the Division of Clinical Research Center for Clinical Research Education by assisting the Director of the CCRE and teaching faculty in the development and production of educational programs in clinical research. In this position, the Instructional Designer plays a pivotal role by supporting clinical research education and providing support to subject matter experts (SMEs) in the creation, production, and seamless delivery of on-demand/ online courses. The Instructional Designer will work with the team members to review currently offered courses and evaluate the content; they will be responsible for special projects such as maintaining and updating the DCR website, reviewing evaluations for live and online courses to revise curriculum, and serving on hospital committees/working groups to support research-focused training initiatives.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
The incumbent will engage in a wide range of efforts to provide curriculum design and development within a clinical research setting and will have a passion for creating engaging and effective learning experiences, a strong understanding of instructional design principles, and the ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders, and SMEs to develop high-quality courses and training materials.
Curriculum Design and development:
- Work with SMEs and conduct thorough needs assessments to identify learning objectives, target audience, and training requirements.
- Provide expert consultation, guidance, and support in the field of instructional design.
- Use evidence-based practices to design, develop, and deliver instructional materials, including eLearning courses, instructor-led training, videos, and other multimedia content.
- Create and edit multimedia elements, such as graphics, animations, and videos, to enhance the learning experience.
- Select appropriate instructional strategies and delivery methods based on content, audience, and learning objectives.
- Apply adult learning and design principles to create engaging learning activities, course content, material/multi-media.
- Utilize an array of learning approaches and cutting-edge technologies to achieve desired learning goals.
- Develop storyboards, scripts, and outlines for training materials to guide the development process.
- Design innovative, engaging, and effective SCORM compliant courses.
- Create assessments and evaluations to measure the effectiveness of training programs and make necessary improvements.
- Utilize eLearning authoring tools and OpenCourses Learning Management System (LMS) to build and deploy training courses.
- Review and edit training materials for accuracy, clarity, and alignment with instructional design standards.
- Utilize ADDIE, Kirkpatrick, and other recognized models to rapidly develop and publish engaging course content and learning activities that accommodate different learning styles.
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Learning Design or related field (Master’s preferred).
- Minimum of 5 years of learning and development experience.
Preferred
- Experience with using Moodle LMS or LMS operations.
- Ability to troubleshoot issues with design tools (e.g., Articulate360).
- Experience working in an agile design environment.
- Graphic Design experience and tools (Adobe Creative Cloud).
- Prior professional experience in a learning and development role.

- Ensure all course elements align with designated layouts and design.
- Strong understanding of LMS.
- Strong understanding of instructional design systems, instructional design methodology, curriculum, and program development.
- Excellent understanding of adult learning theories and methodologies.
- Proficiency with Articulate 360, Vyond, and Canva.
- Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation tools (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
- Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
- Highly motivated team player.
- Ability to learn quickly and take on challenging new projects with enthusiasm.
