Making H5P Feel Like Part of Your Moodle Platform with H5P Themer plugin

H5P is one of my favourite tools for making Moodle LMS courses more interactive. Instead of asking learners to work through page after page of text, H5P allows course designers to introduce interactive videos, presentations, quizzes, branching activities, flashcards and many other types of interactive learning experiences.

There has always been one small issue, though.

You can spend considerable time creating a beautifully branded Moodle platform, carefully choosing your colours, typography and overall visual identity, only for an H5P activity to suddenly feel like it belongs somewhere else.

It still works perfectly well, but visually there can be a noticeable difference between the Moodle course and the interactive content sitting inside it.

This is where the H5P Themer plugin becomes interesting.

What is H5P Themer?

H5P Themer is a free local plugin for Moodle LMS that allows administrators to customise the visual appearance of H5P content across their LMS.

The plugin is maintained by Matheus Mathias and is an adaptation of the H5P Themer project originally created for WordPress by Oliver Otacke. At the time of writing, the plugin supports Moodle 4.5 through Moodle 5.2.

The idea behind the plugin is quite simple. Instead of accepting the standard visual appearance of H5P content, you can customise its colours and density so that your interactive activities feel much more connected to the rest of your learning platform.

That might sound like a cosmetic improvement, but I think it solves a much bigger user experience problem.

Your LMS Should Feel Like One Learning Environment

Imagine that you are completing an online course provided by your employer.

The Moodle platform uses your company’s colours and branding. The course pages follow the same visual style, the navigation feels consistent and everything looks like it belongs together. Then you open an interactive activity and suddenly the colours, buttons and interface look completely different.

As a learner, you probably will not stop and think, “This activity uses a different technology.”

The important point is that you are not necessarily locked into one H5P appearance everywhere. You can create consistency where you need it while still allowing individual courses to have their own visual character.

Making Interactive Content More Comfortable to Use

H5P Themer is not only about colours. It also provides density controls with large, medium and small options. These settings influence how spacious or compact H5P components appear.

This is another detail that can have a meaningful impact on the learner experience. Different Moodle environments are designed differently. Some use wide content areas with plenty of space, while others have narrower layouts or more compact interfaces.

Being able to adjust the density of H5P content gives administrators another way to make interactive activities fit naturally within the overall course design. It is a relatively small setting, but good learning experiences are often created through many small decisions like this.

It Works With Moodle’s Native H5P and the Traditional H5P Plugin

One particularly useful aspect of H5P Themer is that it supports both major ways organisations currently use H5P within Moodle.

It supports Moodle’s native H5P functionality through the Content Bank and H5P Activity, as well as the traditional Interactive Content H5P plugin, commonly known as mod_hvp. That matters because Moodle installations have evolved differently over the years.

Some organisations have large libraries of H5P content created using the older plugin, while newer Moodle implementations may rely primarily on Moodle’s built-in H5P functionality.

Having a theming solution that supports both makes it considerably more useful in real-world Moodle environments.

Why Does This Matter for Learning Experience?

When people discuss LMS improvements, the conversation often moves immediately towards adding more features. I think we sometimes overlook something much simpler.

A better learning experience does not always require another major feature. Sometimes it comes from making the experience you already have feel more coherent.

Learners should be able to move from the course page into an interactive activity and back again without feeling that they have jumped between completely different systems.

The colours should feel familiar. The spacing should feel appropriate. The interface should feel connected to the rest of the course.

None of these things will magically turn poor learning content into great learning content. Good instructional design still matters far more than visual styling.

However, when good content is presented within a consistent and thoughtfully designed environment, the overall learning experience becomes much stronger.

A Useful Addition for Corporate Moodle Platforms

I can see H5P Themer being particularly useful for organisations using Moodle for corporate learning. Consider a company delivering onboarding, compliance training, product education and professional development through the same Moodle platform.

The learning team may have spent months improving the LMS theme and course templates to create a consistent internal learning brand. If H5P plays an important role in those courses, bringing its visual appearance closer to the rest of the platform helps complete that experience.

The same applies to customer education. If customers are paying for training or your distributors are using Moodle to learn how to sell and support your products, the learning platform becomes another customer touchpoint.

In those situations, presentation matters.

The Bigger Lesson for Moodle Administrators

What I like most about plugins like H5P Themer is that they highlight an important principle when managing an LMS. Improving Moodle does not always mean rebuilding Moodle. Sometimes a relatively focused improvement can remove a small but noticeable piece of friction from the learner experience.

H5P already provides Moodle course designers with a powerful way to create interactive learning content. H5P Themer addresses another part of the experience by helping that content visually belong within the learning environment around it.

For organisations already using H5P extensively, that makes this plugin worth exploring.

Start Looking at Moodle Through the Learner’s Eyes
