Moodle Plugins directory now read only – Moodle Marketplace releasing on July 20th

Moodle Plugins directory which has been the backbone of the world’s most popular open source learning management system from the last 15 or more years is now getting replaced with the new Moodle Marketplace. The plugins directory is now read-only which means that there will not be any more official updates or new plugins published on the plugins directory.

The new Moodle Marketplace is new official platform for distributing Moodle plugins, launched by Moodle HQ in 2026. It replaces the Plugins Directory on moodle.org. This is now the one-stop shop for finding, purchasing, and installing Moodle plugins, whether they’re free or paid. As on 18 July 2026, the Moodle plugins directory includes 2832 plugins, from 1588 developers and more than 450k downloads.

While the move to switch to a paid marketplace seems to be a better option and introduce something the Moodle community has requested for years: a single official platform for both free and commercial Moodle plugins.

What Happens to Existing Free Plugins?

Moodle has confirmed that all free plugins currently available in the Plugins Directory will also be available in the Moodle Marketplace. This means administrators can continue using community plugins just as before. Perhaps the biggest change is the introduction of commercial plugins. Previously, Moodle developers had to sell products independently.

With Moodle Marketplace, developers can officially publish:

The Moodle community has always been built on collaboration. The Marketplace aims to strengthen that community by supporting both open-source innovation and commercial development under one official platform.
