Moodle LMS is one of the most popular open source Learning management System (LMS) in the world. Moodle Plugins are one of the most easiest way to extend Moodle features. With more than 2060 plugins in the official plugins directory it is easier to extend Moodle features. In this post, I will share about Multiblock plugin which can help you to combine multiple blocks in a single area.

In Moodle terminology, Blocks are the items that a teacher can add to the left or right of a Moodle course page. They provide extra information or links to aid learning like quiz results, a calendar, HTML block etc. However, having one block for a single purpose can eat up a lot of space on your course page.

The Multiblock plugin addresses this issue by allowing you to combine multiple blocks into a single area. You can combine them in Tabs, Accordion with several preset layouts bundled with the plugin. The best thing is that you can use Multiblock on the dashboard page to combine multiple blocks and declutter it.

The Multiblock plugins offers the following styles of presentations:

  • Accordion
  • Carousel
  • 2-column (split 33%/66%, split 66%/33%, split 50%/50%)
  • Dropdown
  • Tabbed list
  • Vertical tabs / pills

You can download the Multiblock plugin from the official Moodle plugins directory here. Once downloaded you can follow this guide to learn how to install a Moodle plugin. Once it is installed, it is fairly easy to add it to any course page or dashboard page.

You need to click the Gear icon > Manage Contents to add sub-Blocks to the Multiblock instance. You can choose from any block installed on your Moodle site.

I personally feel that this plugin can be very helpful to declutter your course page and dashboard which can help students to focus more on their learning.
