Moodle Educators - How to get rid off the Announcements Forum?

Moodle LMS is one of the most popular and widely used open source Learning management System in the world. It comes with all sorts of features to help you create your own personalised learning environment. The course is the area where you can add your own teaching material and activities for your students. In this post, we will see how you can turn off the announcements forum.

The announcements forum in Moodle course is a good way to start the communication with your students. It is a special forum which allows you to release general news and announcements related to your course. Generally, there is an announcement forum created by default in Moodle course.

By default, it is placed in the top of the central section and only teachers and only users with appropriate permissions (by default teachers) can post in it. The forum has forced subscription set by default which means that all users will receive a notification for the forum posts.

How to remove the Announcements forum?

There may be courses where you don’t want to use the Announcements forum e.g. Corporate Training courses. In order to remove the announcements forum from your Moodle course, please follow these steps:

  • In Course settings, Under ‘Appearance’ section – set “Number of announcements” to 0. (By default it is set to 5 with a dropdown menu.)
  • Delete Announcements forum from the course homepage. With editing mode turned on, Expand the Menu with three dots in right side and select Delete.
  • Delete the Latest announcements block from the course, if its there.

As a Moodle Administrator, you can disable the creation of Announcements Forum in Moodle course in Course Default Settings. Navigate to Site Administration > Courses > Course Default Settings. Under Appearance section, change the Number of Announcements to 0.
