Moodle Admins - Keep completion details of user account by merging two accounts

Moodle Admins often face a peculiar problem when they receive complaints from students that they completed some course activities with their other user account. This may lead to a problem that the completion details are available for two different user accounts. But the students expects that to show for only their main account. In this post we will see how you can merge two user accounts to keep completion details.

The Merge User Accounts plugin comes to the rescue of Moodle administrators in this specific problem. The Moodle plugin allows you to merge two Moodle user accounts into one account.

The intent of the plugin is to assign all activity & records from user A to user B. This will give the effect of user B seeming to have done everything both users have ever done in Moodle.

You can download the Merge User Accounts plugin from the official plugins repository here. Before installation, you are recommended to take a backup of your Moodle site. The basic function of the plugin is to loop through the tables and update the userid of every record from user A to user B. That will help you to restore the state before any merging action was done.

You need to go to Site Administration > Plugins > Admin Tools > Merge User Accounts. The plugin has the option to suspend old user, how to resolve quiz attempts etc. Once you are done, just click save changes to save plugin settings.

To merge the user accounts, go to Site Administration > user > merge user accounts. Just search for the user and select the criteria for search. Under show more, you can choose which user ID to be removed and which user ID to be kept.
