The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music seeks candidates for a faculty position as Instructional Designer at the rank of Academic Specialist. This is a 12-month, tenure-ineligible, renewable position with an initial three-year appointment.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Consults with Jacobs School of Music (JSoM) faculty and staff (and where appropriate faculty and staff of the Jacobs Academy) on a variety of technical and media issues, fostering active and engaged learning through established, as well as cutting-edge tools. Advises faculty and staff on various curricular issues including basic syllabus creation, best practices related to teaching and learning, and the selection and implementation of instructional technologies. Serves as a problem-solving resource for faculty using technology in the classroom and in developing online resources, materials and courses.
Maintains currency on emerging technologies related to learning management systems, active learning classrooms, electronic collaboration, instructional use of multimedia, etc. Provides direct support to faculty and staff with learning management systems (currently Canvas), Qualtrics, faculty reporting tools such as Digital Measures Activity Insight (DMAI), Student Engagement Roster (SER), etc. May lead workshops/training sessions for faculty and staff on various technologies employed throughout JSoM. In collaboration with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Student Success, and the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, Research, and Creative Activity, the JSoM’s Online Education Activities Committee and other faculty groups relevant to teaching, learning and pedagogy, reviews, evaluates, and prioritizes proposed instructional technology, media related projects, and curricular initiatives including providing estimates and documentation for these proposals.
In collaboration with other instructional designers and the JSoM Chief Digital Officer, engages other Music IT staff members as necessary (multimedia specialists, software developers, etc.) to complete projects. Coordinates activities of the Music Information Technology Services unit with those in the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning (CITL) and the eLearning Design Services (eDS) office within University Information Technology Services (UITS), IU Online and IU Expand. Serves as the JSoM catalog manager for IU Expand.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree preferably in music, education, communications, computer science, instructional technology/design, or related field required. Master’s degree preferred.
- Two or more years of experience in instructional development and/or instructional technology consulting, and/or training, and/or teaching (face-to-face or online) or providing instructional design with online instructional technology, preferably in a higher education context
