This role is based remotely but if you live within a 50-mile radius of Atlanta, Austin, Detroit, Warren, Pontiac, or Milford, you are expected to report to that location three times a week, at minimum.
General Motors is looking for a talented and creative Instructional Designer with a background in performance consulting and learning design & development. The Instructional Designer for Learning Design & Development will be responsible for collaborating with writers, developers, vendors, program managers, and SMEs to develop best-in-class learning solutions that include instructor-led training, e-courses, blended and asynchronous curriculums, labs, and simulations.
The ideal candidate excels at managing training requests, skillfully analyzing issues, pinpointing desired behaviors, and addressing root causes in collaboration with business partners. Proficiency in adult learning theory, design thinking and/or action mapping, among other design methodologies, is essential for success in this role. Additionally, the ideal candidate must be an accomplished eLearning developer, showcasing a portfolio featuring engaging courses that incorporate scenario-based learning, action-based learning, or other dynamic approaches that go beyond mundane, click-next content.
Global HR is centralizing learning capabilities to drive efficiencies and deliver more effective learning experiences. Part of this centralization effort is to consolidate design & development resources under one team and staff it with high caliber talent who will help uplevel learning & development at General Motors. This is a key role in achieving these goals.
Responsibilities:
- Skillfully advise business partners on adult learning principles, best practices for effective learning, and debunk prevalent misconceptions related to workplace learning.
- Analyze training needs, identify performance gaps, determine root causes, and recommend tailored interventions to improve productivity and align with organizational goals.
- Prepare design documents that outline course objectives, practice activities, assessments, and evaluation criteria
- Leverage adult learning theories and scenario-based learning frameworks to design engaging and effective learning experiences; oversee storylines, storyboards, and scripts in partnership with our content writer.
- Develop exceptional learning interventions that include eLearning, instructor-led resources, videos, job aids, simulations, and podcasts. Thoughtfully package these assets to maximize a blended learning experience.
- Manage projects using an agile methodology, i.e., SAM, Rapid Prototyping
- Partner with learning admin to integrate curriculum into learning management system
Qualifications:
- 4+ years of experience in instructional design is required
- Bachelors in related field or equivalent experience
- High proficiency with design tools used in a learning creation environment (e.g., Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator, Adobe Captivate, Articulate Storyline, Techsmith Camtasia or similar video editing software, Vyond, Wellsaid labs, etc.) is required
- Ability to communicate highly complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Ability to meet timelines for deliverables, with accuracy, quality and attention to detail
- Ability to prioritize, effectively manage, and communicate about multiple projects simultaneously
- Strong consulting and relationship building skills; ability to work in a collaborative and team-centric culture and influence others without authority
- Commitment to diversity, belonging, and valuing different perspectives
- Advanced degree and/or professional certifications in Instructional Design, Organizational Development or related field preferred
- Experience using Action Mapping, Design Thinking, or similar to identify critical behaviors, pinpoint barriers, and create practice activities that align with organizational objectives and promote effective learning outcomes is preferred
- Experience using any of the following: Google Developers Codelabs, Learning Management Systems, Workday, Software Simulation tools, Metaverse for learning, and game engines (i.,e.,Unreal, Unity) is preferred

The expected base compensation for this role is: $83,800 – $133,900. Actual base compensation within the identified range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
Bonus Potential: An incentive pay program offers payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.
