The Instructional Designer position plays a key role in Radford University’s efforts to provide pedagogical, instructional design, and learning content development consultation related to courses, modules, and whole curricula for instructional projects. The Instructional Designer, working in a fast-paced environment with internal and contracted faculty, subject matter experts, and other eLearning team members, will design and develop new courses and revise existing courses in the online Learning Management System ( LMS ), Desire2Learn (D2L).
The Instructional Designer supports instructors by addressing teaching and learning issues in online courses. This person plays a key role in identifying the needs of students, designing and developing learning experiences, and working with subject matter experts/faculty to produce courses that are outcomes-driven, engaging, and ADA compliant. The Instructional Designer develops courses, manages courses in the learning management system, develops learning activities and assessments, adapts instructional materials, and creates media to optimize student learning. This position is best suited to someone who enjoys problem-solving in a team environment and seeks to develop new skills while growing their understanding of learning and technology. This position reports to the Executive Director of the Vinod Chachra IMPACT Lab at Radford University.
Required Qualifications
- Understanding of learning sciences and instructional design principles.
- Experience with instructional design projects, preferably in higher education, with an emphasis on evidence-based instructional design approaches for online and alternate delivery methods.
- Experience in the use of a variety of instructional technologies and design methods, including one or more learning management systems (D2L experience preferred).
- Ability to convey complex technical information to non-technical users.
- Demonstrated successful design, development, implementation, and evaluation with a variety of instructional products.
- Working knowledge of skills, tools, and processes used in the development and delivery of web-based training / e-Learning.
- Ability to take actions independently in conjunction with maintaining the strategies, goals, and financial constraints of the Lab.
- Working experience with the design, preparation, and documentation of work plans and design documents.
- Ability to maintain focus on the department’s goals and report progress accordingly.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive organization topics and issues as well as maintain learner privacy.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with the Quality Matters and/or OLC quality assurance program for online courses; and developing and validating learner assessments (e.g. design of evaluation instruments, formative and summative assessments, and item design), particularly in machine-scored environments.
- Experience with competency-based education.
- Familiarity with Artificial Intelligence.
- Experience with HTML , CSS , and/or editing tools for Web text and graphics.
- Ability to work proactively on teaching and learning problems of diverse scope.
- Understanding of adult learning theory, distance learning, web-based training, synchronous and asynchronous learning and best practices in eLearning.
- Knowledge of how accessibility technologies and ADA /Section 504 (Americans with Disabilities Act) requirements apply to online learning applications.
- Experience with development of assessments of pedagogical effectiveness and student learning outcomes of digital learning pedagogies.
- Experience with desktop communication environments (e.g., Adobe Connect, Zoom); collaboration and documentation tools/platforms (SharePoint, Office365, OneNote, Google Drive, Slack).
