The Instructional Designer (ID) will provide leadership and support to faculty in planning and implementing effective course design, incorporating instructional standards in the development of courses and curricula and in using technology to deliver courses and programs. The ID will support faculty and staff in the development of web-based courses, hybrid courses, and face-to-face courses. The ID will assist faculty and staff in the utilization of the College’s Course Management System. The ID will also assist faculty in the development and delivery of courses in other distance learning modes. The position will develop and conduct training for faculty in instructional design principles and in the effective use of instructional technologies. The ID will support course development efforts in all credit and non-credit areas of the college.

- Associates degree or equivalent formal training in related field.
- Combination of education instructional design or and related experience for a total of six years.
- Bachelor degree preferred.
- Supervisory experience preferred.
- Collaborates with and leads faculty and staff in all phases of course development and revision, including ensuring the instructional alignment of all course learning elements (e.g. analysis, objectives, activities, resources, outcomes, evaluation and assessment).
- Demonstrates and applies fundamental concepts of course design and performance support technologies.
- Implements assessment strategies, skill gap analysis, and performance-based assessments to match the learning goals.
- Applies current and accepted models, theories and strategies that support cognition in all delivery formats.
- Works with faculty and staff to articulate course-development practices and standards to relevant audiences within and outside the institution.
- Develops training curriculum and conducts training for faculty and staff on instructional design, instructional technology, distance learning strategies, learning theories, and student support mechanisms.
- Trains faculty in initial web-based course delivery through the college’s Online Express training program.
- Produces course materials as a member of a production team that may include other eLearning staff and faculty.
- Ensures course compliance with applicable federal and/or state laws and regulations, including copyright law and the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 508.
- Supports faculty in the utilization of contemporary teaching/learning systems and technologies.
- Assists faculty in implementing interactive strategies that increase student engagement in the learning process.
- Assists faculty in developing and implementing web-based course information in compliance with College web standards and procedures.
- Provides information to the faculty on current trends in instructional design and in technology based learning.
- Assists in the development of performance indicators and instruments used to assess course development products and their relationship to student success.
- Demonstrates in-depth knowledge of web-based course management systems, and specifically, the College’s supported course management system.
- Proficient in a variety of software application packages used to develop and deliver courseware.
- Reaches and presents new technologies and their applicability to teaching and learning.
- Communicates effectively by visual, oral and written form with faculty, staff and administration.
- Formal education or training related to instructional design.
- Currency in instructional design theory and practice.
- Experience in designing instructional materials in a higher education setting.
- Experience in designing, developing and implementing web-based courses.
- Experience developing learning objects.
- Experience in using Learning Management Systems (e.g. Blackboard).
- Experience in developing training curriculum and conducting training for faculty and staff.
- Experience in collecting and analyzing data.
- Experience in working collaboratively with diverse groups, including faculty, staff, and students.
- Ability to successfully manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to effectively communicate in spoken and written standard English.
- Must be proficient in using Microsoft Office, particularly Word, Excel, and Access, and a course management system, preferably Blackboard or Canvas.
- Must be available to work Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Work schedule is subject to change based on the needs of the department.
- Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written standard English.
