Reuse items across Moodle course using the Sharing Cart plugin

Reuse items across Moodle course using the Sharing Cart plugin
Reuse items across Moodle course using the Sharing Cart plugin

Moodle – the most popular open source Learning Management System is very flexible. You can customize it according to your institution’s and learner’s requirements by way of additional plugins. In this post we will be discussing about the Sharing Cart Moodle plugin which allows you to duplicate/reuse course items from one course to another.

For example, imagine that you have a template set for a quiz with all settings which you would be using across all the courses. With the Sharing cart plugin, you can add that to all course in just three clicks. However, please note that it will copy the items without the user data. You can add items to the Sharing cart block and use them whenever you need them.

The Sharing Cart plugin is one of the most popular and most actively maintained Moodle plugins since 2008. Recently it has been updated with another new feature which allows you to copy Course Sections using Sharing cart.

You can download the sharing cart plugin through the Moodle plugins database here. To install it, you can follow this guide, in case you are not aware how to install a Moodle plugin. Once installed, you can use the sharing cart plugin on your Moodle.

How Sharing cart is used for copying items?

Here are the steps reproduced from the Sharing cart documentation:

  1. Turning On and Off: With editing on, add the Sharing Cart block from the block menu. After adding the Sharing Cart block, you will notice the block stays “on” the next time you enter that course. When you go to another course, add the Sharing Cart block to that new course. Then you can see your Sharing Cart as you roam courses across a site. Click the “X” icon to turn “off” the Sharing Cart, although the contents of the Sharing Cart will remain there when you turn it on again.
  2. Copying to the Sharing Cart: You will notice a small “Copy to Sharing Cart” icon which appears after each resource or activity in the center column of a Moodle course. Click on that icon to send a copy of that resource/activity into the Sharing Cart. User data will be removed, only the activity itself will be cloned.
  3. Copying from the Sharing Cart: Click the “Copy to course” icon in Sharing Cart, then you will see many dotted boxes appear in the center column. Choose the location you wish to place your item, and it will be copied there directly.
  4. Making folders inside the Sharing Cart: Click the “move” icon on a course content item and an input box will appear. Input the name of the target folder there. To move an item into a folder, click the “Move to folder” icon in the Sharing Cart, then a drop-down list appears, and select the target folder. If you click the “Edit” button, you will replace the drop-down list with an input box.

In case you face any problems while using the Sharing cart, you can post in the comments section below.

What is Microsoft Flip and How Does it Work for Teachers and Students? Tips and Tricks

Microsoft Flip (formerly known as Flipgrid) is a video based discussion tool which allows fun and engaging video discussion for learning. The aim of Flipgrid is that teachers/students make short videos, and they may comment on each other’s videos. Other interactions such as slide decks, images, and text are also available. Flipgrid is video the way students use video … social, engaging and fun. In this post, we will see what is Microsoft Flip and how you can use it as a teacher in your classroom.

[lwptoc numeration=”none” numerationSuffix=”dot” title=”Topics Covered” width=”full”]

What is Microsoft Flip?

Flip – initially started as Flipgrid at the University of Minnesota in 2015 and later on Microsoft acquired the startup in 2018 and renamed it as Microsoft Flip. In simple terms, Microsoft Flip offers communication between teachers and students through short video clips.

This powerful video discussion tool is ideal for use in Education as it provides a simple to use and fun way of learning. It can be used in school classrooms, in hybrid learning as well as at-home work to enhance communication between students and teachers.

It is designed to provide a group discussion using short video clips which can be used to encourage the students which are not able/shy away to share their response in face to face learning. Flipgrid empowers student voice and builds global empathy through shared learning processes, stories and perspectives

The teachers create topics including videos along with some text descriptors and share it to students for their response. Then the students can continue the dialogue by sharing a short video response. Frequent video creators are awarded with badges and other perks, which also adds an incentive to share questions and answers.

What’s new in Flip?

Flip recently has added Topic Copilot, a useful AI-powered tool. This works to help find ideal topic suggestions easily. Teachers simply need to input a list of keywords and then the artificial intelligence goes to work.

Since this is AI, you can expect mixed results, but as you perfect the prompts — with a bit of practice — this could become a genuinely useful tool for generating new topic ideas for use in class.

How to get started with Microsoft Flip?

The teachers can use the Microsoft Flip for free of cost. You can sign up using your Microsoft, Google or Apple account. Once ready, a teacher can create a new group from the top right corner as shown below:

Once, your group is created you can easily share it with your students/learners using the information :

Once your group is ready for the first time, then you can easily start creating topics and using in your classroom. You can click on create a new topic and add a title & description and configure the recording time. You can also add a video from YouTube or other source. Under the settings tab you can configure the Topic open/close date, response options, camera options etc.

Flip – Add a new topic

Once you post a new topic, the students can start responding to it with their own video responses. These videos can be recorded as many times as needed before uploading, and can have the addition of emoji, text, stickers, drawings, or custom stickers.

Best features of Microsoft Flip?

  • Freedom for students – The best feature of Microsoft Flip is the ability for students to submit their response without any pressure of face to face classroom. They can easily interact using videos with in their own space and time when they are completely ready. This makes it helpful for students who often are left out of the class in physical classroom.
  • Social Media like Interaction -The ability to interact in a similar way like the other popular social media apps make it easy for students. It also helps them go more creative by adding emojis, stickers, gif’s etc. They will also feel like on the social media apps while interacting with other colleagues.
  • Easy Integration – The integration with Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams and Remind makes it easy for a teacher to integrate into the current virtual classroom setup.

What is Flip Grid?

A grid is a term used by the Flip community to describe a group of learners e.g. a class in case of a school is a grid. In the newer versions of the Flip app, there is no term as Grid so you can continue creating the Groups or Joining the Groups created and shared by the teachers. However, you will often find the term Grid on Flip community discussions.

Why Microsoft bought Flip?

Microsoft bought the startup in 2018 as part of its effort to better compete with Google’s education software for schools and its popular Chromebooks. The acquisition comes one and a half years after Microsoft announced a partnership with Flipgrid.

Is Microsoft Flip totally free?

Flipgrid is free to use and available on both PC and mobile applications for Android and iOS users. Additionally, audio transcripts and closed-captioning are available for users who require content to be delivered in an alternate format.

Moodle 4.0 database schema now available

Moodle 4.0 is the latest version release of the world’s most popular open source LMS. The latest Major release includes a plethora of new features which are focused on improving the User Experience. Marcus Green – Author of the Moodle Gapfill and WordSelect question types recently posted the full documentation and diagrams for the Moodle 4.0.2+ database structure.

The documentation and diagrams also known as ERD diagrams covers all tables and relationships and additional implied PK/FK relationships.

An Entity Relationship (ER) Diagram is a type of flowchart that illustrates how “entities” such as people, objects or concepts relate to each other within a system. ER Diagrams are most often used to design or debug relational databases in the fields of software engineering, business information systems, education and research.

The current ER diagrams information is generated from the Moodle database schema as contained in the Moodle install.xml files. A standard Moodle install discards all field comments and foreign key relationships.

Marcus has been working on the first versions of this documentation since early 2004. He has also a compilation of old versions ER diagrams. You can check out the older versions archive here.

How to use Moodle’s inbuilt accessibility checker

How to use Moodle's inbuilt accessibility checker to create content for everyone
Moodle Accessibility Checker

Accessibility is a constant focus among online educators and administrators. In the context of online teaching, accessibility means making it possible for all students, regardless of physical or developmental impairment, to use all course materials and tools. In this post, we will learn how you can use Moodle’s accessibility checker to create accessible content for your learners.

Moodle’s goal is to be fully accessible and usable for all users regardless of ability. But due to its modularity, content created by teachers and other factors it is not always possible to make Moodle absolutely accessible. However, let’s have a look at the inbuilt accessible checker which you can use to make your online course in Moodle more accessible for your learners.

Accessibility of online course is important because:

  • A significant number of people have disabilities that can make it difficult for them to take an online course
  • Many students with disabilities prefer online courses to face-to-face courses.
  • Accessibility is required by law in many countries.

In the Atto text editor – which is the default text editor in Moodle there is an automated accessibility checker tool is available which checks for some common errors in the text. These are usually things in the way the text is constructed that can prevent all users from having equal access to information and functionality. The Atto accessibility checker will be looking for the following concern areas:

  • Images with missing or empty alt text (unless they have the decorative role only)
  • Contrast of font colour and background colour meets WCAG AA guidelines
  • Long blocks of text are sufficiently broken up into headings
  • Captions for all tables
  • All tables should contain row or column headers
  • No merged cells in Tables as they are difficult to navigate with screen readers

To make your text more accessible in Moodle, you can follow this guide for Accessible Course design.

San Francisco-based Tract Raises $7M In Seed Funding To Expand Its Platform

San Francisco-based Tract Raises $7M In Seed Funding To Expand Its Platform
San Francisco-based Tract Raises $7M In Seed Funding To Expand Its Platform

Tract, recently announced that it has raised $7 million in seed funding. Tract is an edtech platform which allows students to make hands-on videos for class projects. The fresh capital will be used for expanding into more schools.

Co-founded by an ex-Uber product lead Ari Memar and his former high school teacher Esther Wojcicki in 2020, Tract enables students and teachers learn through making and sharing educational videos within a safe web-based platform that other kids and teachers can engage with through likes and comments. Kids of all ages can use Tract, but most of the students using the platform are between 3rd and 8th grade.

With Tract, students sharpen their critical thinking skills and solve real-world problems as they learn, teach, create, and share their own multimedia content. All kid-created content on the platform is interactive, with built-in commenting, liking, and sharing features, as well as gamification, awards, and live community events that keep students excited and engaged.

The fresh round of investment was led by NEA, with the participation from Moving Capital, Oceans Ventures, Global Founders Capital, Bessemer Venture Partners, K50 Ventures, G9 Ventures, Graph Ventures, Alumni Ventures Group, Minerva, and Correlation Ventures.

According to the company’s statement, the fresh capital will be used for expanding into more schools, and it has launched its first collection of project-based lesson plans across math, English language arts, science, social studies, and art. It also plans to remain free for teachers to use in their classrooms. Speaking about the fresh round of investment, Co-founder & CEO of Tract, Ari Memar, said:

I was talking to her about the things she was doing, like giving kids a lot of trust and respect to work on real-world projects, that’s when the light bulb went off for him. The number one thing kids want to be is a YouTube or TikTok creator. They aspire to be creators because they want to be creative, famous and teach.

Adding further about the company, Co-founder of Tract, Esther Wojcicki, said:

Teachers are overworked and understaffed. Parents are busy. Kids are not getting prepared for future jobs. My goal with Tract is to help make it easy for anyone, anywhere to prepare their kids for success.

Based in San Francisco, Tract provides a safe and secure space for kids to feel empowered and express themselves. It’s strong compliance practices and moderation have earned the privilege of serving schools and parents across the globe.

According to Memar, by the end of 2020, the prototype was up and running, and throughout 2021, Tract started to attract lots of attention from teachers across the US. It really picked up steam during the pandemic as parents and teachers were looking for educational content kids could use online, and investors started taking notice.
