These plugins enhance Moodle’s functionality, enabling educators to deliver a more enriched learning experience. In this post we will understand about SCORM Remote plugin and how it can be used.

The SCORM Remote activity plugin allows you to upload a SCORM and then serve it remotely to other learning management systems on other domains using a thin SCORM wrapper. The benefit of using this plugin is that you need to upgrade the SCORM package at a single place remotely and it will be updated on all domains. You can also set allowed seat limits for each domain.

The SCORM Remote plugin offers various advantages such as:

  • Outsource the learning similar to how LTI works reducing the burden on the remote LMS’s admins
  • Sell your SCORM packages without giving them away
  • Add seat restriction at the domain level
  • Swap the SCORM packages in place and not require the remote LMS to do anything they automatically get the latest version of the package.

You can download the SCORM Remote Moodle plugin from the official plugins repository here.

Moodle Admins – Create custom reports in Moodle using Configurable reports plugin

Moodle LMS is the most popular open source learning management system with more than 420+ million users in the world. Wherever elearning is used for teaching, the administrators or policy makers are always interested in customized reports. In Moodle core, there is a strong push for the inbuilt report builder since last few versions but the Configurable reports plugin remains one of the favorite tools to create customized Moodle reports.

The Configurable reports plugin is an easy to use custom reports builder which allows you to create reports even without any SQL knowledge. If you are aware about SQL queries then this plugin can fetch all the data from Moodle database to your reports.

The configurable reports plugin is essentially a block type plugin which can be added to any course to pull course specific reports and on front page to pull site wide reports. You can also choose which users will be able to view the reports. Using this plugin, you can create different types of reports such as:

  • Courses reports, with information regarding courses.
  • Categories reports, with information regarding categories. A courses report can be embedded in this type of report.
  • Users reports, with information regarding users and their activity in a course.
  • Timeline reports, this is a special type of report that displays a timeline. A course or user report can be embedded in this timeline showing data depending on the start and end time of the current row.
  • Custom SQL Reports, custom SQL queries.

It also supports advanced features such as filters, pagination, logic conditions and permissions, plots, templates support, export to various formats etc.

Recently the plugin was updated after a long time to support Moodle 4.2 version. You can download the Configurable reports plugin from the official plugins repository here.

Moodle Teachers – How to use the Ordering Question type in Moodle

Moodle 4.4 – the latest major version of the Moodle LMS is packed with a lot of exciting new features. One of such is the Ordering Question type which is included in Moodle core through Moodle Users Association funding. If you haven’t yet used the Ordering Question type, let’s see how you can use it in your Moodle quiz.

The Ordering question type was available as one of the most popular question type plugin in the official plugins repository. In the previous project development cycle, MUA committee got it included in the Moodle 4.4 with few minor changes.

The ordering question as the name states can be used to displays several items (words, phrases, images or other media) in a random order which must then be dragged into the correct sequential order.

To add a new ordering question, you can navigate to your course > Question bank > Create a new question and select Ordering. Add the question name and the question text. Then choose whether you want the items to display vertically or horizontally. Make sure to choose the best grading type for your students.

In order to add images to your ordering question, make sure to change the Draggable item format to HTML instead of Moodle Auto format. Once you save your question, it will show the TinyMCE Editor (default text editor).

If you are using Moodle 4.4 version, you shall have the Ordering question type included by default. And, in case you are using older Moodle version, you can download the plugin from the official here.

Overall, it is pretty easy to use the ordering question type to make your Moodle quiz more engaging. What are the other question types you are using on your Moodle site? Please share with us in the comments section below.

Moodle Teachers – Organize your learning content into separate units using Subcourse plugin

Moodle, an open-source learning management system (LMS), is widely recognized for its flexibility and robust set of features. It enables educators to create and deliver online courses effectively. One of the significant strengths of Moodle lies in its extensive library of plugins that extend its functionality. Today we will discuss about the Subcourse plugin which will allow the teachers to organize the learning content into separate units.

The Subcourse Moodle plugin allows course creators to include other courses as subcourses within a main course. This plugin is particularly useful for organizing courses into hierarchies, making it easier to manage and navigate complex learning paths.

Key features of Subcourse plugin:

  • Hierarchical Course Structure: The primary feature of the Subcourse plugin is its ability to embed subcourses within a main course. This hierarchical structure is ideal for programs that require modular learning paths, such as degree programs, professional certifications, and training programs.
  • Automatic Grade Synchronization: One of the standout features is the automatic synchronization of grades from subcourses to the main course. This ensures that learners’ progress is tracked seamlessly across all course components, providing a unified view of their performance.
  • Customizable Completion Tracking: The Subcourse plugin allows for detailed tracking of course completion. Educators can set specific criteria for subcourse completion, ensuring that learners meet all necessary requirements before progressing.

You can download the Subcourse plugin from the official plugins repository here.
