Moodle LMS - Survey and Chat Tools to be deprecated soon

Moodle LMS has been powering more than 400 million users around the world since last 20 years. It includes many fascinating online teaching tools which can be used to make online learning courses better. However there are few tools which were created during the early days of Moodle and they have lost their relevance in modern learning environments.

Moodle contains many activities or resources types which are the heart of the Moodle LMS. There are Quiz, Assignment, Lesson, Workshop, Interactive Content (h5p) etc. As part of ongoing maintenance, the Moodle HQ has assessed the trends in usage for different tools.

According to the assessment, the Survey tool which has been a part of Moodle core since its inception, has been infrequently used over the last three years. Similarly, the Chat tool – which has been part of Moodle for more than a decade, has seen a gradual decline in usage as the educators move to more sophisticated chat tools.

Based on the above data, the Moodle HQ team has decided to start deprecating the Survey & Chat tools from Moodle LMS in future versions. Both the tools will be removed from Moodle core and moved to the Plugins directory.

The schedule for deprecating both the tools is as follows:

  • Moodle 4.4 – Survey and Chat tools will be disabled for all new installs by default.

  • Moodle 4.5 – No further changes

  • Moodle 4.6 – Survey and Chat tool will be removed from core and migrated to the plugins database.

What are your thoughts about deprecating the Survey & Chat activity in Moodle LMS? Are you using these tools extensively? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below.
