    The Instructional Designer enhances the quality of all online and technology assisted courses at COCC by working closely with faculty from the design phase to course delivery. The Instructional Designer is the design expert who guides faculty as the subject matter experts. They work in close collaboration with the eLearning Instructional Coordinator and Disability Services office in the development and refinement of courses that adhere to COCC standards in quality online course delivery in a variety of modalities, and using various instructional technologies.

     

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities
    Course Development and Review:
    • Leads campus stakeholders in development and implementation of strategies to evaluate the instructional effectiveness and quality of technology-enhanced courses.
    • Maintains an efficient workflow, effective communication and meets deadlines for identified projects with academic departments and other stakeholders.
    • Collaborates with other areas of the College, such as Curriculum and Assessment, the Teaching and Learning Center, Testing and Tutoring, Disability Services, Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Community Education, and Information Technology Services (ITS) to improve teaching and learning with academic technologies.
    • Develops/assists in the development of course templates and design elements for specific disciplines and delivery methods that support instruction while maintaining a consistent student experience. (E.g.: learning objectives instructional activities and assessments, and multimedia elements.)
    • Supports course development and course review schedules.
    • Follows current developments, trends and knowledge in emerging technologies through personal research and collaboration with local and regional groups.

     

    Course Design Support & Faculty Training :
    • Works with faculty as Subject Matter Expert (SME) to assist in the development of comprehensive formative and summative assessments that link directly to learning objectives and core competencies.
    • Engages faculty to assist and instruct in the design of high-quality web-based learning environments that consider accessibility, universal design principles, and equity-minded pedagogy.
    • Conducts design-related faculty professional development workshops and training.
    • Provides training and guidance on use of appropriate tools for varying instructional modalities.
    Academic Technology Department Support:
    • Collaborates and communicates closely with the eLearning Instructional Coordinator and Director of eLearning to support ongoing department goals and initiatives.
    • Creates and maintains content within the Learning Management System and other COCC supported academic technology.
    • Supervises eLearning support staff as assigned.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. The individual is expected to follow College work rules and policies.
    • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Universal Design for Learning principles, ADA guidelines and various design models (e.g., ADDIE, Backward Design, Kirkpatrick).
    • Ability to conceptually understand instructional needs and translate them into differing instructional modalities.
    • Demonstrated skills in a variety of academic technologies including learning management systems, web-based applications, and multimedia software.
    • Demonstrated commitment to customer satisfaction: exceptional skills in collaboration, consultation, communication, customer support, and time/project management.
    • Experience with the design, development and implementation of digital course materials using industry standard tools and technologies.
    • Experience with the applying various academic technologies to support student success.
    • Familiarity with use of course quality assessment models (e.g.: Quality Matters, OSCQR).
    • Ability to balance and prioritize multiple projects and work well under pressure with varied deadlines.

     

    Ergonomic Requirements
    Regular office hours are established between 8 am – 5 pm during the workweek. A flexible work schedule, including nights and weekends, may be necessary due to the nature of the responsibilities.
    Incumbent must be able to function effectively indoors in an office environment engaged in work of primarily a sedentary nature. Requires the ability to work at a workstation for extended periods. Requires to write, read written materials and computer screens, and ability to use telephonic conversations. Occasional lifting up to 25lbs. All individuals are required to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

     

    Minimum Requirements
    Education:
      • Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Education or related field.

     

    Experience:
    • Three years’ experience in any combination of the following areas in an education or training setting:
      • Course/curriculum development and review
      • Course/curriculum design support and training
      • Demonstrated competence in designing content/curricula for learning management/online learning platforms
    • One-year supervisory experience

    Preferred Qualifications
    Education:
    Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Education, or related professional field.
    Experience:
    • Experience in a higher education setting.
    • Experience using and authoring courses in the Canvas LMS.
