The Johns Hopkins School of Nursing (JHSON) is seeking an Instructional Designer to join the instructional design, technology, and support team (IDTS) who will provide instructional design vision, leadership, and execution. The instructional designer will work collaboratively with faculty, students, subject matter experts, external partners, and IDTS team members to design, develop, deliver, and support instructional products and services to meet JHSON’s business needs.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Lead the analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation of complex courses and training, ensuring competency alignment among courses to achieve program and professional objectives.
Collaborate and consult with faculty, staff, and associates on the effective use of instructional design strategies, web-based resources, multimedia technologies, and instructional software and systems to improve instructional outcomes.
Utilize project management skills to communicate, prioritize, track, and report project progress of milestones, challenges, and areas for improvement.
Serve as a team LMS administrator to configure, build courses, implement 3rd party integrations, and stay current on LMS system upgrades/changes.
Utilize multimedia technology and authoring tools to develop interactive and engaging instructional resources including eLearning, video, audio, and graphics.
Conduct training, workshops, and coaching for faculty to promote excellence in instructional design, instructional sequencing, teaching, active learning, engagement, and assessment strategies.
Evaluate the instructional effectiveness of programs, courses, and training products.
Create and revise instructional materials to ensure that they ensure quality, inclusiveness, and compliancy to ADA, Section 508, WCAG 2.1, and UDL standards for all learners.
Apply instructional design theories and related principles to program and department needs.
Stay abreast of JHU and peer institutional best practices and evaluate them for potential application in instructional design.

Knowledge of various course assessment techniques and methods.
Ability to conduct course reviews using the Quality Matters rubric or other assessment tools.
Familiarity with copyright laws and creative commons.
Strong Project Management skills.
Experience working directly with faculty members and/or subject matter experts.
Experience supporting users of large enterprise data systems (student information, learning management, business systems, etc.).
Advanced experience managing learning management systems (i.e., Canvas, Blackboard, Brightspace, Course Plus, etc.)
Create lists, reports, scorecards, and dashboards using SharePoint, Power Automate, and Power BI.
Experience with remote assessment programs.
Experience with assessment management platforms.
Basic knowledge of streaming audio and video, compression methods, file types, and formats.
Advanced experience with authoring tools (Articulate Storyline, Articulate Rise, Captivate, H5P, etc.).
Experience using online conferencing software (i.e., Teams, Zoom, etc.) for meetings, presentations, and webinars.
Familiarity with graphic design elements appropriate for online instruction.
Excellent presentation skills.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Strong understanding on how to operate general office and communications equipment, including personal computers and audiovisual equipment.
Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications
Knowledge of current WCAG 2.1 AA recommendations.
Knowledge of SCORM and other standards for online course delivery.
Advanced experience building courses and managing subaccounts in Canvas.
Demonstrated experience working with enterprise level video management systems (i.e., Kaltura, Panopto, etc.).
Create advanced custom eLearning mechanisms using advanced actions or triggers.
Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, SharePoint, MS Teams, Excel, etc.).
Proficient document, image, audio, and video manipulation skills using Adobe Creative Suite (Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, etc.).
Familiarity with graphic design elements appropriate for online instruction.
Competency with basic HTML editing software.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Education, or related field
Three years of progressively responsible experience in course design and development, faculty training, or program/course assessment/evaluation.
Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula
Preferred Qualifications
M.A. /M.S. Degree in Instructional Design or in an education related discipline.
5 years of professional experience in an academic and/or corporate environment, designing and developing online instruction.
Demonstrated use of Quality Matters rubric or similar course design quality standards.
Experience working with both Mac and PC platforms.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
