Reporting to the Director of Instructional Design & Media Production, the Senior Instructional Designer will be responsible for the planning and development of innovative, equity-minded, and accessible on campus, online, and hybrid courses that leverage interactive multimedia content and appropriate, mobile-friendly educational technology and tools to engage diverse learners and support their achievement of course and/or program goals. The Senior Instructional Designer will build content in the learning management system (Canvas) using various software applications, shaping curricular content, which may be complex and novel, into coherent instructional modules that support knowledge acquisition through aligned learning objectives, assessments, and learning activities. The Senior Instructional Designer is a technical leader in the field with expert knowledge of and demonstrated ability to apply instructional design models and curriculum development frameworks, evidence-based pedagogical approaches, adult learning theories, accessibility guidelines, usability standards, needs analysis, and course evaluation tools in the creation and effective delivery of course content. The Senior Instructional Designer will lead and engage other instructional designers in systematized quality assurance processes for all newly designed or redesigned courses. To support an efficient course production cycle overall, the Senior Instructional Designer facilitates the transfer of courses from instructional designers to studio staff by ensuring pre-production efforts are complete according to the media production schedule for a course.
In advising instructors and other subject matter experts through on-campus and online consultations, the Senior Instructional Designer demonstrates a high degree of collaboration, diplomacy, and advocacy skills and an ability to proactively engage in unique problem analysis and creative solutions. The Senior Instructional Designer will discuss and support implementation of strategies to map and manage student performance and behavioral data using appropriate tools.
In collaboration with technical teams, including media production staff in the TLC studios and instructional technologists supporting the Bruin Learn ecosystem (Canvas + various educational technology tools), the Senior Instructional Designer solves complex and/or unique content or delivery related issues during implementation of new or revised courses. The Senior Instructional Designer has an exceptional command of communication in interacting with a range of audiences and campus stakeholders, including senior administrators, various TLC personnel, and partners in other teaching support units. The Senior Instructional Designer takes initiative, works with a high degree of autonomy on ongoing course design projects, and attends to multiple projects to meet deadlines.
In addition to course design (including quality assurance and pre-production tasks) and consultation responsibilities, the Senior Instructional Designer will develop and facilitate professional learning programs for UCLA instructors and graduate student teaching assistants (TAs); these may include on campus workshops and institutes as well as online webinars. The Senior Instructional Designer also will lead development of content for TLC teaching guides and other on-demand training resources, administer on campus and virtual events highlighting UCLA instructor engagement in innovative course design projects, and contribute to campus communications promoting instructional design services offered by the TLC. The Senior Instructional Designer may be asked to engage in special projects.

Salary & Compensation
- UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Salary offers at the top of the range are not common. Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 Years of Experience Min. of 5 yrs of experience in designing high quality academic courses for online delivery and/or re-designing traditional on campus courses for delivery via online or hybrid instructional modalities. (Required)
- B.S. degree in an area related to education, communications, educational technology, instructional systems, or other academic discipline and/or equivalent exp. and min. of 5 yrs of exp. in designing high quality academic courses for online delivery/re-designing traditional on campus courses. (Required)
- Advanced knowledge of and ability to use curriculum mapping to understand how work within one course may impact work being done on other courses within a departmental curriculum or multidisciplinary program advanced analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations, demonstrating organizational and problem-solving skills. (Required)
- Advanced skill in working independently, balancing multiple projects, meeting deadlines, and following through on duties with minimal supervision, ability to interact effectively in a team environment with strong collaboration and interpersonal skills, experience teaching and/or training in college or university context. (Required)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including online etiquette when engaging in remote videoconference meeting (e.g., video camera on , chat discussions); ability to negotiate with instructors and other subject matter experts in the design of content and student-centered learning experiences. (Required)
- Advanced knowledge of instructional design models and frameworks, instructional approaches / classroom teaching in higher ed, adult learning theories, accessibility, usability, needs analysis, learning objective design and assessment, and course evaluation tools. (Required)
- Advanced experience with learning management systems (preferably Canvas) and advanced knowledge of eLearning strategies, including, but not limited to, courses (e.g., project management processes, course design cycles, instructional design software and authoring tools, educational technologies and multimedia). (Required)
- Advanced ability to plan, document, and monitor effective course design cycles and offer performance solutions to support and improve processes; experience in conducting specialized training in instructional design tasks, multimedia integration, and educational technology adoption. (Required)
- Advanced experience in using and instructing others in the following areas: educational technology, instructional design software for developing interactive eLearning content (e.g. ,Adobe Captivate, Articulate 360), and interactive social media, multimedia, simulations, and/or gamification applications, etc. (Required)
- Advanced experience in using project management tools in supporting course design/development cycles. (Required)
- Ability to collect data, analyze data, create reports, and prepare written communication with attention to detail and accuracy; ability to research multimedia and educational technology tools beneficial to promoting engaged teaching and learning. (Required)
- Some extended hours and weekends. (Preferred)
- Ability to work on campus with the potential for a hybrid schedule. (Required)
Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations
- Bachelor’s Degree B.S. degree in the area related to education, communications, educational technology, instructional systems, or other academic discipline and/or equivalent experience. (Required)
